www.ccasta.org March 11, 2018 Last Lent, Bill Wingard visited the St Augustine campus to give an inspiring presentation on the science and history of the Shroud of Turin. Thanks to CCASTA parishioner Jackie Kelly for sharing her notes. Relic of Love -Fr. John The Shroud of Turin is one of the most extensively researched relics of Christianity. It is believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus. Here s why. In 1898 Italian photographer Secondo Pia managed after several setbacks to take the first photograph of the Shroud when it was on display. What a discovery! The negative shows the face of Christ so very clearly, unseen by the eye in daylight. Because the shroud shows a negative of Christ s face in regular light, the photograph shows the positive, with much more detail of the full face. Further testing has revealed some amazing facts about the shroud and the passion: It has real blood, verified by scientists (no paint). Photo microscopy shows a flax weave used only in Egypt and Jerusalem. Pollen on the shroud is found exclusively Humbled by God s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service. -Mission Statement

Liturgical Calendar March 17th St. Patrick-Bishop Our Prayer Intention For March For all those who have grown lukewarm and distant in their faith to be rekindled as missionaries of Christ.. Prayer is essential to becoming a mission-driven active parish, so please pray with us! in Jerusalem. The blood on the shroud is bright red, indicating a violent death. The man in the image was severely beaten, swollen cheekbones, broken nose. Split beard (Isaiah 50:6), beard plucked. He had been scourged with a Roman flagrum A crown of thorns was tied to his head Blood from the crucifixion on the wrists and feet Blood loss was immense. The blood type was not that of the universal donor as the doctor performing the test expected, but of the universal recipient (AB pos). Large abrasion on one knee. In 1988, carbon dating was performed on a small sample of cloth taken from a middle section of the cloth, which dated the shroud to the Middle Ages. It turned out to be a bad sample which had been touched by many people over the centuries who were trying to care for the shroud. In 2005, peer-reviewed science proved the sample was invalid. There is much evidence of the Resurrection on the shroud as well. To find out about it, you can visit http://bit.ly/ccastashroud. Most of the scientists who worked on the shroud eventually converted from atheism to the true faith. To find out more about Christ s passion this Lent, join us on Thursday, March 22nd as Matt Commins gives a dramatic presentation on Jesus passion & death. See details in attached flyer. CONFESSIONS A Day of Reconciliation, Monday March 19 Confessions will be heard from 3 PM to 8 PM at both parish campuses. We will also have the normal confession times at 3:15 PM on Saturdays at Ascension & 4:15 PM on Saturdays at St. Augustine. Page 2
