Dear Family at Peace, Lent asks us to embrace a spiritual gravity, a downward movement of the soul, a turning from our self-sufficiency and sinfulness. In such quiet turning, we are humbled and thus made ready to receive from God a fresh and joyous grace. (Bobby Gross) This description of the season we call Lent captures our journey during the 40 days prior to Easter Sunday. As we consciously enter the journey that took our Lord, Jesus to his death on the cross, we are intentionally aware that it was our sin that sent him to the cross. We observe Lent during a time of year when the days are lengthening and, eventually, the signs of new life appear. Even as Lent progresses with its somber themes and ascetic disciplines, the natural world reminds us of the coming resurrection. We begin our Lenten Journey at the place where Psalm 51 takes us to David s prayer of admission of guilt and cry for God s mercy. He asks the Lord to purify him from his sins and remove the stain of his guilt. David s desire is to be restored to the joy of his salvation. We then find our way through Psalm 103, where, again, David falls on the mercy of the Lord. But, now he is filled with praise when he recounts all the good things that are already his forgiveness, healing, redemption, mercy and renewal. He recalls the attributes of his God The Lord is compassionate and merciful slow to anger and filled with unfailing love. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us as we deserve. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. Even as we prepare for the anguished hours of Good Friday and the unfathomable silence of Holy Saturday, we anticipate the glorious joy of Resurrection Sunday. These six weeks are like walking in a still-darkened valley even as the morning sun lights the tops of the mountains around us. Holy God, mindful of our weakness and sin, we come before you to receive your compassion and grace. We have known your goodness, your deliverance and your love. We ask for mercy for the ways we have neglected and rejected you. We open ourselves to receive your Spirit, that gives us strength and perseverance for the journey we are on. May we bring Glory to you! Amen. Journeying Together, Pr. Bob 3

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. 2 Thessalonians 1:3 Well, dear friends of Peace Lutheran Church, I have news to share that I thought would be given much later rather than sooner. But I have made the decision that I would like to phase into retirement. When Misty and I moved here in 2013 our thought was that we would eventually retire here. But things can change, can t they? First, it has become clear that I can t retire in the Gallatin Valley. The cost of living here is much too high for us. Secondly, since 2013 we have had 2 grandchildren born to our middle son Jared and wife Chelsea living in the Faribault, MN area. And another one is being planned for by our youngest son, Julian and wife, Katie living in Sioux Falls, SD. Both families really want Misty and I to be near to them and to share that part of their life. And, we really want that, too! It s so hard being 1000 miles away. My hope is to serve as an Interim Pastor in the MN, SD, IO, WI (Lutherland!) area as I phase into retirement. And, after I retire, serve on a much more limited basis. Misty s desire is to teach preschool. So what that means is we hope for a late summer or early fall move to MN. Our time here with you has been an absolute blessing! You all have been so warm and accepting and supportive! And I enjoy very much being on the Pastoral Staff with Pastor Bob. We are a good team, I think! But Misty and I are very lonely for our family and so we feel the need to start planning our next stage of life. I pray that you understand the reasons for our leaving. As a wise, long-serving pastor told me early on in my ministry, Pastors should have 3 top priorities in life and set in this order: God, family, church. Sisters and brothers in Christ, in the months that we have left together please know that while I am your pastor I am all in, as it is said, until we leave. I won t pull away from you and I will serve our congregation with my whole heart as I always have. I love you and remain so grateful to be your pastor. May God guide us all in the months ahead. Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 4
