Evening Prayer

EVENING PRAYER Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Evening Prayer (often called Evensong in the Anglican Church), is the traditional service when people come to church to worship in the late afternoon or early evening. Evening Prayer services have developed and been adapted by various denominations over the years, but the focus has not changed: praying, reading, meditating on, and singing scripture. Our hope is that this service will provide us space to intentionally open our hearts and minds to God in the midst of our hectic lives this Lenten season. 1

Seated WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO EVENING PRAYER Psalm 46:1011 Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. PRELUDE Be Still My Soul Lyrics: Kathrina von Schlegel Trans. Jane L. Borthwick, 1855 Music: Jean Sibelius, 1899 CALL TO WORSHIP Joel 2:1213 Yet even now, declares the Lord, return to me all your heart, fasting, weeping, and mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Standing O God, come to our assistance. O Lord, hasten to help us. Be Thou My Vision Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Traditional Celtic Hymn 8th Century Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word I ever Thee, and Thou me Lord Thou my great Father, I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I Thee one 2

CONFESSION OF SIN Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to you and to one another, that we have sinned against you by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not fully loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not always had in us the mind of Christ. You alone know how often we have grieved you by wasting your gifts, by wandering from your ways. Forgive us, we pray, most merciful Father; and free us from our sin. Renew in us the grace and strength of your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Joel 2:13 Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. In Christ, we are forgiven! May the peace of Christ be you! And also you! 3

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 145:819 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you! They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works. The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 4

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 49:819 Thus says the Lord: In a time of favor I have answered you; in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages, saying to the prisoners, Come out, to those who are in darkness, Appear. They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture; they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. And I will make all my mountains a road, and my highways shall be raised up. Behold, these shall come from afar, and behold, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Syene. Seated Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on his afflicted. But Zion said, The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me. Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. (Silent time for prayer and reflection.) 6

GOSPEL READING John 5:1929 So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. (Silent time for prayer and reflection.) CANTICLE The Magnificat Luke 1:4655 Standing My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. He has shown strength his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. (Continued on the next page.) 7

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. s He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. COLLECT FOR THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT Seated Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
