Pastor Kwan Writes Encourage One Another Our goal is not to wait for people to encourage us but rather to be proactive in encouraging others. One of the signs of a mature believer in Christ is his or her compassionate attitude towards those who are weak, helpless and downtrodden. God s Word challenges us in I Thessalonians 5:14: And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. At the Senior Adult Fellowship monthly Thursday Bible Study meetings, we constantly talk about how to put into practice what we have learned together, i.e. to be an encourager to one another. The following are some practical steps we deliberated upon, which we pray God will help us to act on. We seek our best to encourage one another by E Expressing our appreciation for the little things that people do for us, and being thankful to God for the gifts we receive. N Nurturing young believers in their Christian faith through studying the Bible together with them. C Caring for the sick and comforting the bereaved by our presence. weep with them that weep - Romans 12:15b. Visit the sick and attend wake services. O Opening our homes to entertain one another and especially to those who are new in the church. Use hospitality one to another without grudging - 1 Peter 4:9. U Urging those young in their faith to draw closer to God s people through the various activities of the church, e.g. Discipleship groups, Adult Bible Classes, etc. R Rejoicing with those who rejoice. Participate cheerfully at special functions to celebrate special occasions, e.g. birthdays, new home, anniversaries, etc. A Assuring others of our prayers for them and taking the challenge to pray earnestly to the Lord for their ministry or for their spiritual walk in the Lord. G Giving to those who are poor and to those who are in need of financial assistance. for God loveth a cheerful giver - II Corinthians 9:7b. E Exhorting young believers to persevere in their faith and Christian walk. Share with them our testimonies of God s goodness and grace. These are some practical things that we can do to build up the church of Christ and to unite our hearts together to serve the Lord. Let us pray that the Lord will enable us to exercise our Christian faith by being a doer and not a hearer only. 224
Senior Adult Fellowship Dick Pooi Yesterday, by the grace of God, the Senior Adult Fellowship celebrated its 35th Anniversary with a Thanksgiving service and dinner. The speaker was Rev Jack Sin from Maranatha BP Church. We thank God for His love and His infinite blessings for our seniors all these years and we will continue to commit ourselves and this fellowship group to praise and glorify Him. From a humble beginning since its first inception 35 years ago, when the few events organised were on an ad hoc basis, we thank God for His blessings that now we are able to plan the various events ahead. Among the various programmes organised are the Monthly Bible-study/meetings, Health talks, Home Visitations, Day-Outings, Endau-Rompin Trip and Morning Walks. The highlight of the year is our Annual Retreat. Monthly Bible-Study/Meeting: Every first Thursday of the month, a group of about 40 seniors gather together to sing hymns of praises, to study God's word with group discussion, sharing and praying with one another, ending with a fellowship lunch. Health Talks and Morning walk: These are planned for the physical wellbeing of our seniors as our body is a temple of God. These events double as outreaches since we are encouraged to invite non-believers to join us in order that they might hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Home Visitations: Twice a month, the SAF will visit our home-bound brethren to encourage them and to partake The Holy Communion with them. During Christmas, special day-time carolling was also organised for them. Endau-Rompin Trip: The purpose of this trip is to encourage our Malaysian brethren serving at the churches of Endau, Rompin, Kg Hubong and Mersing. Many of our seniors who have gone on this trip are encouraged themselves by the way our Malaysian brethren dedicate their lives in serving the Lord. SAF Annual Retreat: Once a year, usually in the month of September, we will hold our annual retreat over a period of 4-5 days. It is hoped that through this retreat, we will continue to walk closer to the Lord and our brotherly/sisterly bonds can be further strengthened. With 35 years' of God's blessings behind us, we will continue to look for His blessings for the years ahead and pray for the Lord to touch the hearts of others to come forward to help serve in this Fellowship for the "harvest" is plenty but the "workers" are few. The SAF will be totally committed to be dedicated (as a Soldier), disciplined (as an Athlete) and diligent (as a Farmer). 2 Timothy 2:3-6 227

Awana Ministry: Weekly Prayer Guide Pray for teachers gifted with skills to teach two regular Awana children with special needs. Thank God for touching the hearts of two brethren: one new handbook leader; and one games leader. They were moved by the Spirit after Church Camp to come forward. Please pray for all leaders to be constantly renewed in love for Jesus and to pay our Gospel debt faithfully. Pray for more Cubbies (ages 5-6) and Sparks (ages 7-8) to join Awana. We have only 8 Cubbies and Sparks kids versus 26 Truth & Training (ages 9-12) kids. Foreign Missions - Vietnam The people of Vietnam are some of the least reached with the Gospel in Asia. Pray that this nation would be transformed as the Good News of Jesus Christ extends to all people and segments of society. Pray for the ongoing spiritual battle as ancestors are worshipped. The capital Hanoi, with a population of 7 million, has less than 0.1% evangelical believers. Ho Chi Minh City, with a population of 8-10 million, has nearly 2% of Christians. Pray for the Holy Spirit to open hearts. The country is changing rapidly and becoming increasingly globalized. The values of younger generations have become more materialistic and individualistic. Pray that there would be increasing opportunities to tell them about Jesus. Pray for revival in the Church in Vietnam. May the church grow in outreach to local communities. Pray that the Gospel would be seen and heard as lives are changed. Remember our missions partners in Vietnam Thank God for our strategic partnership with Gia Dinh Church in Ho Chi Minh City. Through our collaboration, we support financially the churchplanting ministries at Tra Tan, Tan Hiep, Phuoc Tan, Ben Cho and Phu Trung. Uphold the pastors and evangelists in our prayers. They serve faithfully and courageously despite opposition and oppression from local authorities and non-believers. May the Lord grant them wisdom and grace to respond winsomely so that they can maintain a credible and effective witness for Jesus Christ. Remember in prayer the believers in these 5 areas. May they seek to grow in the knowledge of God's will and His Word. May God sustain and keep them steadfast in their faith and not fall away easily in the face of opposition and persecution. 226
