On March 4 the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation hosted a forum on the Sacred Feminine -- part of an International Women s Day observance. Dr. Judith A. Burns of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Indianapolis ably represented Orthodoxy on the panel whose members were asked to respond to the question: How does your faith tradition inform your understanding and experience of the sacred feminine? As we approach our observance of the Theotokos' Annunciation, we proudly share with you the eloquent response Dr. Burns delivered to the many participants representing a multitude of faiths. Her reflection is heartfelt, moving and profound. Our hope is that you will share this with your parish as we anticipate the Feast of the Annunciation. Many thanks to Dr. Burns and Fr. Anastasios Gounaris for sharing this reflection. Fr. James Kordaris [frjimk@goarch.org] Department of Outreach & Evangelism email: outreach@goarch.org www.outreach.goarch.org The Sacred Feminine - An Orthodox Response For many, the image of the Christian Orthodox faith is of a man with a beard, dressed in black robes, wearing a funny hat. I offer another image truer to my experience. In reflecting on my experience of the Orthodox faith, I came to realize that I experience that which is sacred and feminine in the practice of my tradition in the company of women. I worship in the company of a woman, the Theotokos, the God-bearer, the Mother of God. In the prayers and hymns of Divine Liturgy her feminine presence and theological significance are ever present. On the Royal Doors, the center opening of the icon screen to the altar, there is most often a split icon of the Annunciation. The Archangel Gabriel is on one door and Mary on the other. The opening to the altar, the gateway to Christ, is through the Theotokos. One need only to observe the icons of the Theotokos on the icon screen and above and behind the altar to grasp that the Incarnation was the meeting of the will of God and the free will of a woman. Her womb conceived. Her blood nurtured. Her body gave birth to God incarnate. Christ is present in our midst because of the Yes, the consent of a woman, the Theotokos. In my spiritual journey the womb has become an increasingly profound image of that spacious place to conceive, nurture, and give birth to the heart s longing for communion with the Divine. I understand and experience the ascetic spiritual disciplines as a pathway to the freedom to say, Yes, to such communion. As I practice the traditions of my faith with women, those traditions become living memory. On Holy Thursday after Divine Liturgy, I will gather with other women to wrap red-dyed eggs in tulle tied-off with a ribbon. These Paschal eggs, a traditional symbol of the Resurrection, will be given out after the Paschal Vigil. As we prepare these eggs, we will talk about past Paschas, get to know newcomers, and catch up on what is happening in one another s life. It is a communion of women. In past years, I have placed those red eggs in the arthritic hands of a beloved matriarch of the congregation. She would hold the egg and attempt to shape the tulle as I tied the ribbon. Theodora passed away last year; may her memory be eternal. I will miss her. I will see her hands as I prepare the Paschal eggs this year. I will remember those hands as a living memory of her life, the Resurrection, and the sacred communion of women. I experience the sacred feminine as living memory as I practice my Christian Orthodox faith in the company of women. Amen. Dr. Judith A. Burns, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Indianapolis, IN
