Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Parish News STATIONS OF THE CROSS UPDATE Recently we were in contact with the artists in Italy who are carving the new Stations of the Cross for Holy Martyrs. It is an involved process. Each station is carved by hand. Each one is an original work of art and there are fourteen of them! The task of the artist is to use materials (in our case, wood) that fit harmoniously with the style of the church and the other artwork especially our beautiful large carved crucifix. They also need to make sure each station fits harmoniously with the other 13 stations to form a visually pleasing whole an artistic unity. The end result should inspire and enhance our prayers. Early in the process, we shared with the artists photos of our church and the comments of parishioners who shared their insights into how they pray, their image of Jesus, and their sense of church and faith. We also looked at Stations of the Cross in churches around our diocese. They represented a wide variety of styles and materials, from beautiful ornate stations more than a hundred years old to contemporary forms using modern materials. Some were created (like ours) by artists with great skill. Some others were massproduced or cheaply made, some just purchased out of catalogs of church supply companies. We found that only true original artists works stood out; they alone had the ability to inspire. These Stations will be the most extensive installation of art ever done in Holy Martyrs Church. Why commission original Stations of the Cross? The Church documents on worship and design encourage parishes to support real artists and craftsmen to use their artistic gifts to embody the message of faith, calling religious artwork that is worthy and beautiful, forms of worship that inspire and reflect the prayer of the community and the inner life of grace. They discourage the use of religious artifacts that are trivial, contrived, or mass-produced, that detract from the community s prayer. Instead, they call for churches to be dignified with noble beauty and intrinsically excellent art. This is the goal in commissioning our Stations. We are grateful to all those who have made a financial gift to support our new Stations of the Cross. There is still a need for additional gifts. Those who would like to contribute to this project or to sponsor an individual Station are encouraged to talk to a member of our pastoral staff or call Holy Martyrs Church Office. Pray for those who have died in Christ: Betty Eberling, Mother of Deborah Kazmierczak Daily scripture readings for the week of April 9, 2017 can be obtained on the USCCB website or you can download one of the following Apps on your phone: Laudate or The New Missal

Holy Martyrs Church April 9, 2017 Medina, Ohio Parish News JUST FOR LENT SMALL GROUPS Session 5, the last part of our Eucharist series by Bishop Robert Barron, continues to highlight the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Some of the main points are: The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. As we participate in Eucharist, we participate in Christ s sacrifice, and are in communion with Christ. The body and blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained in the sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist. This Real Presence is visible to us through the eyes of faith. The priest acting in the Person of Christ and speaking Christ s words at the consecration, acts to make Christ s presence real in the Eucharist. Jesus, as part of the Triune God, has the power to create and to transform reality at its deepest level simply by speaking. Transubstantiation does not change the appearances of the bread and the wine, but on the deepest level of their reality, they have been changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. Please pray for our Holy Martyrs Small Groups Ministry. HAVE YOU BEEN HEARING THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT SMALL GROUPS? We welcome you to join a Small Group for our 4-Week Spring Series: When God Doesn t Make Sense Groups will meet the weeks of April 23, 30, May 7, and 14 If you will be new to Small Groups Ministry, please complete a Registration Form found in the Gathering Area or on holymartyrs.net. Holy Martyrs Church April 9, 2017 Medina, Ohio Parish School of Religion - 330-952-1466 Helping the Less Fortunate at Easter Thanks to all who contributed the many baskets, grass, candy, activities, containers etc. for the children and families of battered women in the Cleveland and Medina area. Thank you too, to all those who were on hand this past Thursday evening to put together the baskets for these families and their children. We have so much to be grateful for, but in particular we are blessed to have so many people with good and caring hearts who are willing to reach out and help those who have less. May our risen Lord give you all you need and may he guide you to be the ever present light of Christ to all you meet. CONFIRMATION - Session 6 Candidate and Parents Meeting Date: Tuesday, April 25 Place: Martyrs Hall Our topic for discussion will be Here I am, Lord! Parishioners are asked to keep our Candidates in their prayers as they continue their journey toward full initiation into the Church. Imagine the most fantastic and outlandish TRUE story that you have ever heard. Why did you believe it? When I am told true stories that are hard to believe, I accept their truth because I trust and know the storyteller. For nearly 2,000 years believers, through the Church, have been telling a whopper of a true story. Jesus Christ is risen! Christ s resurrection changes all of human history the power of death is at an end and we can live in hope. During the 50 days of Easter (until Pentecost), we journey with the first Christians as they come to terms with this fantastic account of Christ s coming back from the dead. Easter invites us to celebrate, connect our story of faith to that of the church, and to pass that on to others. Praying is not just words. Easter calls us to take our prayer to the next level. Challenge: Read the Acts of the Apostles during the Easter season. How did the apostles take their Jesus experience to the next level?
