So far we have raised close to $15,000 of the $18,000 that we need. We want to thank all of those that have donated time, money, and prayers to helping us attend the Gathering. The auction was a huge success and helped us get close to our goal! There will be a few more fundraisers in the coming months to get us to our goal. Please help support us by attending and spreading the word about our events. One ongoing fundraiser is recyclable cans. Bring your cans to church and leave them in the designated bin in the narthex. Each can is worth 10 cents! We invite you and your family to Easter Breakfast April 1st in between services. We will be serving pancakes, hash browns, sausage, fruit and more! In April, the youth will be going on a retreat to help prepare them for their trip and the reasoning behind why we are heading to Houston. Please reach out to the 12 youth members going on this trip. We encourage the congregation to get to know these youth members. The 12 going on the trip are Emily, Amber, Taylor, Avery, Julia, Matthew, Joe, Paul, Japhety, Edward, Jospin, and Swayam. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 Council President...Submitted by Linnea H. As I promised in last month s newsletter, this article will be devoted to SOV s vision and goals. Future newsletter articles from Council Committees will identify specific goals and action plans that they have been working on this year and how those goals and action plans have come to life at SOV. When the Strategic Task Force met in 2012, they created a new Mission Statement for SOV which is: Provide a safe and accepting place to celebrate God s grace. Invite and engage the curious. Reach out to the world in love and service. Strive to be an example of how the Lord would live in today s world. As the task force formulated our vision statements, they recognized that these statements could be grouped together in three key areas which are captured on our banner above the choir and listed below along with some expansion: Reaching Up for Inspiration and Strength: Promote individual spiritual growth Expand Christian education Sustain and grow the music program Reaching Out to the Community: Build a presence with individuals and families in the community Extend invitations to the community List and prioritize capital facilities projects Add programs for all ages Increase membership Reaching In to the SOV Family: Build Shepherd s community Establish groups and programs for everyone Goals and action plans have been created for each of these vision statements, and committees have reviewed the goals and established appropriate new action plans where needed. Each decision we make on Council is to be done with the Strategic Plan and its vision in mind. With your help and prayers, your Council is working to bring this Plan to life. Watch for more information in the months ahead about how the committees have been activating our goals. Yours in Christ, Linnea Harmon

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 Meal Train! Here is an opportunity to follow up on the 95 Acts of Kindness we talked about at our Reformation celebration. Shannon Heizenrader had surgery to remove a brain tumor on February 26. She would find it helpful to have meals provided for her family for 4-6 weeks while she is recovering. Meals will be delivered to the family as needed during that time. So as you prepare your family dinners, please consider making extra to put in the SOV freezer for the Heizenraders. Fellowship Update...By Christine Todd Make enough for four grown-ups. If your dish calls for onions or garlic, substitute onion and garlic powder. If using canned tomatoes, use crushed tomatoes. If possible, use a container that doesn't need to be returned. Bring your dish and place in the choir room freezer. Note your name and contact info on the sign-up sheet. Coming Attractions Fellowship is planning an Art Exhibit and Gallery Opening of artwork with Christian and liturgical themes by Larry Gross. Watch this space for details. God's Work, Our Hands - A work party and chili feed is in the works to spruce up the church and grounds this spring. In May, we will celebrate our 80's and Over members and friends with an all-congregation luncheon. Questions and suggestions? Contact Chris Todd, cgrosstodd@gmail.com. APRIL NEWSLETTER ARTICLES ARE DUE MARCH 26TH

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 5 Hello from your newly formed Stewardship Committee! The Committee -consisting of Linnea Harmon, Jim Allgaier, Pastor Dan, and myself (Reynold Roeder) had its first meeting in early February. We started by asking what stewardship is. This then lead to a discussion about approaches to stewardship SOV had used in the past, and how stewardship fits in with our mission statement of Provide a safe and accepting place to celebrate God's grace. Invite and engage the curious. Reach out to the world in love and service. Strive to be an example of how the Lord would live in today's world and the related vision statement categories of Reaching Up, Reaching Out, and Reaching In. The more we discussed it, the more we liked an approach tied to these items. We also discussed what stewardship is and isn t. Stewardship isn t exclusively about raising cash. Rather, it is a way of life; the broader concept of caring for and sharing the God given gifts we have received. We have all heard of the gifts being time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is connecting or using those gifts in combination with the human capacity to be concerned about an issue, care for another, or better yet, love another. It is worth spending a little time meditating on that concept. Are we using our gifts on the things that we are passionate (or compassionate) about? So, what should we expect over the coming months related to these concepts? Well, expect some novel approaches to highlighting our God given gifts and connecting those to Reaching Up, Reaching Out and Reaching In. In doing so, we will inventory the things we have done in the past and discuss things we might utilize our gifts for in the future, all within the framework of Reaching Up, Reaching Out and Reaching In. Scrip Order Sundays; March 4th & 18th New scrip order form is out! Columbia Pass with a Columbia gift card purchase while supplies last. Time to order your See s Easter Candy Please give your order and payment to Brenda or Linnea or simply drop it in the scrip box located in the narthex anytime.

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 6 The Power of Prayer God has given us direct communication with Him through the gift of prayer. Personal prayer and praying together and prayer teams are how God listens and works in our lives. Coming together to ask God s healing, comfort, direction or giving Him thanks is such blessing as Christians. Our Worship team wants to encourage anyone attending our church to be aware of the different options we have for asking for prayer. A prayer request box with printed forms is located in the narthex of SOV. Your prayer request will be added to the prayer team and given to Pastor Dan. Feel free to add your contact information on the prayer request if you would like to be contacted by Pastor Dan. Any prayer request can also be emailed or phoned into Tammy McDonald, our church secretary or Pastor Dan. They will direct your prayer request to the SOV Prayer Team. This is a volunteer group of people that make a commitment to pray for each person. At the time a prayer request is submitted, each person has the opportunity to ask that their prayer request be shared with the congregation by email and/or be included in our Sunday prayers or kept private. The Prayer Team is eager to add more people to the prayer team. If you are interested in knowing more about being part of our prayer team please email please Tammy, Sandra Carasco or Pastor Dan. As we strive to Reach Up, Reach Out and Reach In we hope that all people associated with Shepherd of the Valley know that we want to Reach UP in prayer and share the amazing gift of God s love through the Power of Prayer! VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 7 Kids of the Kingdom Christian Preschool Our character word in February was Love, sharing your happy heart with others. We learned how Jesus showed or taught us about love in the stories Jesus Feeds the 5000 and the Good Samaritan. Each class celebrated love with a Valentine s Day party. The children had a hard time with the idea that it is winter but there wasn t any snow. So when the snow finally did arrive, they were absolutely delighted!! In March we will be participating alongside SOV with the GEM Easter baskets. We will also be learning about and celebrating Easter. We ll end March with a week off due to Spring Break! We began our enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. We currently have openings in all of our classes. If you or someone you know is interested in KOK, please contact us at 503-645-0236 or at kokpreschool@gmail.com to set up a tour! Easter Egg Hunt Easter Sunday Children (10 years or younger) meet at the usher station at 10 am on Easter Sunday., April 1. Bring your own Easter basket. You ll have time to enjoy the Easter breakfast before or after the hunt and still sing Alleluias at first or second service. Sponsored by Parish Ed. If questions, email wendyroeder@gmail.com.
