WELCOME TO WORSHIP! April 3, 2016 8:00 am Traditional Worship with Communion Common Questions Important Answers: Are You Telling Me The Truth? We are grateful God led you to join us today! We pray that you are blessed, strengthened, and uplifted by your time of worship with us. Grace and peace be yours n abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus out Lord. ~ 2 Peter 1:2 For information in nursery, cry room and other needs during worship, please see the back of the worship bulletin. The service is printed out and available on the screens. If you d like music to follow along during the hymns, please use a red Christian Worship Hymnal, found in the pew holders. To all our guests, as we celebrate the Lord s Supper today at Good Shepherd, we see this activity as a public expression of our personal faith. All members have taken time to study the truths of God s Word and professed a oneness with our congregation before joining us at the Lord s Table. We look forward to having you join us at the Table in the near future, but simply ask that before you do, you would speak with one of our Pastors. May God renew and lift you up as you worship today! THE COMMON SERVICE WITH COMMUNION Opening Hymn O Sons And Daughters Of The King CW #165:1-4 O sons and daughters of the King, Whom heav'nly hosts in glory sing, Today the grave has lost its sting! On that first morning of the week, Before the day began to break, The Marys went their Lord to seek. An angel bade their sorrow flee, For thus he spoke unto the three, "Your Lord will go to Galilee." That night th' apostles met in fear; Among them came their Lord most dear And said: "Peace be unto you here." Text, Tune, Setting: public domain. 1

Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: (sing) Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. Lord, Have Mercy Kyrie C: (sing) Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: (sing) Amen. 2

PRAYER AND PRAISE P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. Glory Be To God Gloria in Excelsis C: (sing) Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for your great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer. You sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us. For you only are holy; you only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Prayer of the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: (sing) And also with you. P: Let us pray. O risen Lord, you came to your disciples and took away their fears with your word of peace. Come to us also by your Word and sacrament, and banish our fears with the comforting assurance of your abiding presence; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: (sing) Amen. 3

THE WORD First Lesson: Genesis 15: 1-6 We have the same certainty as we simply trust God s promises! 15 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. 2 But Abram said, Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir. 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir. 5 He took him outside and said, Look up at the sky and count the stars if indeed you can count them. Then he said to him, So shall your offspring be. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Song What A Friend We Have In Jesus Panther Choir Second Lesson: 2 Peter 1: 16-21 The Word of God affirms the truth of God! 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Verse Of The Day P: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Alleluia. (John 20: 29b) C: (sing) 4

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 5

Hymn of the Day O Sons And Daughters Of The King CW #165:5-8 When Thomas afterwards had heard That Jesus had fulfilled his word, He doubted if it were the Lord. "Thomas, behold my side," said he, "My hands, my feet, my body see; And doubt not, but believe in me." No longer Thomas then denied; He saw the feet, the hands, the side; "You are my Lord and God," he cried. Blessed are they that have not seen And yet whose faith has constant been; In life eternal they shall reign. Text, Tune, Setting: public domain. MESSAGE Are You Telling Me The Truth? Pastor Dave Tiarks, preaching Sermon text: John 20: 19-31 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you! 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord! But he said to them, Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you! 27 Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. 28 Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God! 29 Then Jesus told him, Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are 6

those who have not seen and yet have believed. 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Create in Me C: (sing) Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right spirit with-in me. Cast me not a-way from your presence, And take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, And uphold me with your free Spirit. Amen. Prayer Cards Visitors and members, please feel free to use the blue Prayer pew card to share prayers on your heart. You may request to keep them private, or to have them shared with the congregation for encouragement. Prayer of the Church P: Lord God, heavenly Father, the earthshaking news of Your Son s resurrection gives us a new song to sing. We, the children of Zion, rejoice in our resurrected King. By His resurrection You have assured us of His victory over death and hell. Every minute of every day of our lives is not sufficient time in which to give You adequate thanks. We confess that our lives do not always reflect the assurance and joy You have given us through Your Son s resurrection. Too often we have been doubting Thomases, looking for tangible evidence. Too often we have failed to let others know that we believe Jesus Christ is Your Son and the living victorious Savior of the world. Help us accept the witness of Your disciples in Your Word. 7

For our many moments of doubt, forgive us, O Lord. For looking for signs instead of searching Your Word, forgive us, O Lord. O Lord Jesus Christ, as You gave Your peace to Your disciples, so may that peace abide with us. As You gave Philip the mission to tell the man in the chariot about You, so lead us to someone who needs to know You as Savior. O Holy Spirit of the living God, make Your presence felt in our nation and in the churches. May Your Church hold high the lighted candle of the Gospel. Add Your blessings to our efforts and turn the hearts of many to follow Christ. Special prayers and intercessions P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. P: Bless our nation with peace, and help us to live in harmony with Your will, in whose name we join to pray: Lord s Prayer All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen. 8

THE SACRAMENT Preface P: The Lord be with you C: (sing) And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: (sing) We lift them up unto the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: (sing) It is good and right so to do. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, and we praise you especially for the glorious resurrection of your Son, the true Passover Lamb, who by his sacrifice took away the sins of the world and by his resurrection restored everlasting life. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: Holy, Holy, Holy Sanctus C: (sing) Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts: Heav n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, blessed is he, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Words of Institution P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: (sing) Amen. 9

O Christ, Lamb of God Agnus Dei C: (sing) O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Grant us your peace. Amen. Distribution Hymn Like The Golden Sun Ascending CW #147 Like the golden sun ascending, Breaking through the gloom of night, On the earth its glory spending So that darkness takes to flight, Thus my Jesus from the grave And death's dismal, dreadful cave Rose triumphant Easter morning At the early purple dawning. Thanks to you, O Christ victorious! Thanks to you, O Lord of Life! Death has now no power o'er us, You have conquered in the strife. Thanks because you did arise And have opened paradise! None can fully sing the glory Of the resurrection story. You have died for my transgression; All my sins on you were laid. You have won for me salvation; On the cross my debt was paid. From the grave I shall arise And shall meet you in the skies. Death itself is transitory; I shall lift my head in glory. Grant me grace, O blessed Savior, And your Holy Spirit send That my life and my behavior May be pleasing to the end, That I may not fall again Into death's grim pit and pain, Whence by grace you have retrieved me And from which you have relieved me. For the joy your advent gave me, For your gospel's great reward, For your baptism which has saved me, For your supper and your Word; For your death, the bitter scorn, For your resurrection morn: Lord, I thank you and extol you, And in heav'n I shall behold you. Distribution Hymn He s Risen, He s Risen CW #143 He's risen, he's risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord; He opened death's prison, the incarnate Word. Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song And earth, sea, and mountain the praises prolong. The Foe was triumphant when on Calvary The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree. In Satan's domain did the hosts shout and jeer, For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear. But short was their triumph; The Savior arose, And death, hell, and Satan he vanquished, his foes. The conquering Lord lifts his banner on high; He lives, yes, he lives, and will nevermore die. Oh, where is your sting, Death? We fear you no more; Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden's door. For all our transgressions his blood does atone; Redeemed and forgiven, we now are his own. Then sing your hosannas and raise your glad voice; Proclaim the blest tidings that all may rejoice. Laud, honor, and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who now sits in glory and ever shall reign. *Text: c 1941 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission of CPH. THANKSGIVING Song of Simeon Nunc Dimittis C: (sing) Lord, now you let your servant depart in peace according to your word. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel. P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. C: (sing) and his mercy endures forever. Prayer P: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: (sing) Amen. Blessing P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and + give you peace. C: (sing) Amen. Amen. Amen. Closing Hymn He Is Arisen! Glorious Word CW #162 He is arisen! Glorious Word! Now reconciled is God, my Lord; The gates of heav'n are open. My Jesus did triumphant die, And Satan's arrows broken lie, Destroyed hell's fiercest weapon. Oh, hear What cheer! Christ victorious, Rising glorious, Life is giving. He was dead, but now is living!
