Her experience includes education, parish adult faith formation and house of prayer ministry. Sister Maria served in pastoral leadership for many years in a setting of cultural diversity in the rural South. Currently, she is a retreat facilitator and spiritual director who teaches Prayer on the faculty of the Archdiocesan Church Ministry Program.

Sister Mary Jo Kearns, RSM is a co-director of Mount St. Mary House of Prayer. In addition to more than 30 years of work as a spiritual director and retreat director, Sister Mary Jo has special interests in grief recovery and programs related to holistic development. Sister Theresina Flannery, RSM is presently a part-time staff member of Mount Saint Mary House of Prayer. For more than 35 years, she has served in the ministry of prayer and spirituality for adults with a special emphasis on retreats and spiritual direction. Sister Theresina has served as a past President of the Sisters of Mercy of New Jersey. Each retreat is a six-full day directed retreat beginning at 7PM on the opening evening and ending after liturgy and breakfast on the closing day.

She received her training in spiritual direction at the Claret Center, Chicago, Illinois, and the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, Wernersvlle, Pennsylvania. Margaret Ellen Burke, SC, a New York Sister of Charity, has been training and supervising spiritual directors for over 25 years as well as giving retreats (directed, guided, preached) in U.S. and Canada. As co-founder and director of the Center of Renewal & Education, she continues to focus on the formation and spiritual development of lay leaders in the upper counties of the NY Archdiocese. Her background also includes years of chaplaincy to the terminally ill. Hiking is one of her favorite pastimes and she is rarely seen without her camera. She presently resides at the organic farm of the Sisters of Charity in Dutchess County, NY. Father Anthony Ciorra was ordained as a priest in 1973. His experience has included parish life, teaching, administration, retreat work, preaching and formation ministries. He has graduate degrees in psychology, history and pastoral theology and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction. He has a Ph.D. in theology from Fordham University. His areas of research and publication include spirituality in the workplace and living Christian moral values in the world. He gives workshops and retreats throughout the United States, the Middle East and Europe. Currently he serves as Assistant Vice President for Mission and Catholic Identity at Sacred Heart University.

Sea Isle Retreats (continued) Directed Retreat - June 8 to 15, 2013 Marie Ann Ellmer, RSM, is a Sister of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community. She has been providing on-going spiritual direction for 12 years. Marie Ann has given retreats at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, St. Rafaela Center, Cape May and Daylesford Abbey. She currently resides at Our Mother of Divine Providence Convent in King of Prussia. Marie Ann has worked with persons with chronic illnesses and their care givers, victims of abuse and other traumas, and many women and men seeking a personal relationship with God. Marie Ann is a musician and ritual planner for Mercy Vocational High School, the Sisters of Mercy, Mother Teresa Regional School, and other ministries. She is Chair of the Mid-Atlantic Spiritual Life Committee and a member of the Merion Site Community Liturgy Committee. Marie Ann plays the organ, piano and guitar, and directs choirs, instrumentalists and hand bells. Reading, theater, concerts and movies are her favorite free time activities. Carol Conly, RSM, has been a retreat and spiritual director for over 30 years. She served as co-director of StillPoint House of Prayer for 10 years and as a Co-Director of Upper Room Spiritual Center for nine years. Carol has given retreats in Guam, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as locally. She has served in Community related ministries for almost 20 years. Presently Carol is Director of Support Services at the Watchung, NJ site of the Mid-Atlantic Community. Jim Gavin, OFM Cap Father James Gavin is a Capuchin Franciscan ordained to the priesthood in 1965. In addition to his philosophy and theology studies prior to ordination, he holds a Graduate Degree in Religious Education and Pastoral Spirituality from East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, Philippines. He served as a missionary in Japan and the Mariana Islands (Guam) for over 19 years. In the mainland United States he served as a hospital chaplain, parochial vicar, social justice friar, retreat-parish missions director. His preaching on various Gospel themes has won him acclaim as a special events preacher, a retreat director for clergy and religious, and a presenter at seminars on spiritual life. He presently resides as senior friar at Good Shepherd Friary in Manhattan.

Sea Isle Retreats (continued) Preached Retreat - June 15 to 22, 2013 Sister Melannie Svoboda, SSND, has been a Sister of Notre Dame for 48 years. Her ministry experience includes high school and college teaching, novice director, and community leadership. A freelance writer, her articles have appeared in numerous publications such as America, Catholic Digest, National Catholic Reporter, and Living Faith. She has written 12 books including Traits of a Healthy Spirituality, With the Dawn Rejoicing, When the Rain Speaks, and When the Blue Heron Flies. Currently she writes, gives talks, and directs retreats nationally. Retreat Theme: Everyday Epiphanies: Seeking God in Every Nook and Cranny Based on her popular book, Everyday Epiphanies, Sister Melannie's retreat will explore some of the places we find God in our everyday lives: friendship, nature, work, leisure, the news, art, pain, joy, and prayer. Using scripture, stories, poetry, music, and humor, Sister will lead our prayerful exploration of some of the major epiphanies in the Bible as well as the more ordinary epiphanies in our everyday lives. ++++++++++ Preached Retreat - June 22 to 29, 2013 Sister Marie Michele Donnelly, RSM, currently serves as Co-Director of Mercy Spiritual Ministries, through which she provides preached retreats for parishes, school faculties, ministry groups, ecumenical groups and religious communities. She is a frequent presenter for parent and parish groups throughout the Tri-State region (PA, NJ and DE). Sister is a keynote speaker for large groups across the United States. She is an adjunct Theology professor at Gwynedd-Mercy College. She holds an M.A. in Theology from Villanova University. Retreat Theme: Responding to the Groans of Creation - Deepening Our Experience of Awakening the Dreamer In response to the requests of many Sisters to provide deeper theological and spiritual insights into the Awakening the Dreamer project, the Institute Justice Team has established a Mercy Taking Action Committee. One of the charges of the group was to create a six-day retreat. This is the pilot of that retreat.

Sea Isle Retreats (continued) Directed Retreat - September 7 to 14, 2013 Mary Carboy, SSJ Sister Mary is currently in full-time ministry as the spiritual/retreat director at St. Raphaela Center, Havertown, PA. Mary graduated from Duquesne University with an M.A. in Formative Spirituality and completed programs in spiritual direction through the Center for Spirituality in Wernersville, PA and Chestnut Hill, PA. Francis Gargani, CssR A Redemptorist priest for 42 years, Francis ministered for 10 years in parish ministry, seven years in campus ministry, nine years in retreat ministry and nine years in social justice ministry, studying in the Masters Programs in Liturgical Studies at Catholic University, Washington, DC, and Spirituality and Spiritual Direction at Fordham University, Bronx, NY. He is presently serving the Redemptorist Provincial Residence in Brooklyn, NY. He has been active as a retreat and workshop presenter and facilitates the annual early August Directed Retreat in Mariandale Retreat Center in Ossining, NY. Kathleen McAlpin, RSM Sister Kathleen has served in leadership in the New Membership Program of the Sisters of Mercy. She is an experienced Spiritual Director and has taught Spiritual Direction in the Integration for Ministry Program at Regis College in Toronto and in the Christian Spirituality Program at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. ++++++++ Preached Retreat - October 5 to 12, 2013 Mary-Paula Cancienne, RSM, is a Sister of Mercy who teaches Theology and Religious Studies at Georgian Court University. As part of her work, Mary-Paula focuses on contemporary spirituality and the questions, challenges, gifts and invitations that are to be discovered in our time. She practices the art of spiritual direction and, when time permits, she writes religious icons. Retreat Theme: Women of Mercy, Woman of Hope ++++++++ Solitude Retreats: A solitude retreat experience is for those who desire to spend time alone with God but do not feel they need the attention of a retreat guide.

Karen is trained as a spiritual director and has further studies in Theology, Scripture and Spirituality. Senan Taylor, OFM Cap., PhD, a Capuchin priest, is a spiritual director, preacher, and social worker. He has extensive ministry experience in initial formation, retreats and renewals for religious and lay people.

Our Constitutions, our Declaration and our Lives This retreat will combine the elements of conference, contemplation and conversation to reflect on the integrity of word and deed to which the Constitutions calls us. Presenter: Sheila Carney, RSM is a member of the New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West Community and currently serves as Special Assistant to the President for Mercy Service at Carlow University. Long a student of Catherine McAuley and the Mercy way of life, Sheila has offered retreats and conferences around the Mercy World. For the past five years she has been Vice-Postulator for the Cause of Catherine McAuley. ++++++++ Preached Retreat July 27 to August 3, 2013 Theme: Yes, Lord. "Yes, Lord", she told Him, "I believe." (John 11:27). During this time of retreat, we will consider renewing our baptismal, vocational "yes" in the Year of Faith. Presenter: Father Joseph Fonti was born in Brooklyn and was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1992. His ministry has been as parochical vicar, high school chaplain, pastor, spiritual director at Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston. He is presently the Director of the Office of Priestly Life and Ministry and the Associate Director of the Sacred Heart Institute in Huntington, Long Island.

Water Mill Retreats (continued) Preached Retreat August 3 to 10, 2013 Theme: Praying with the Psalms: A Treasury of Wisdom and Praise The Book of Psalms encompasses a broad range of human emotions. These ancient songs of Israel nurtured Jesus own prayer, which is a model for us. Likewise, the New Testament community treasured psalms as doorways into deeper understanding of the mystery of Christ. This retreat will reflect on a variety of psalms, which invite us to draw wisdom and strength for our lives from that treasury. Presenter: Reverend Paul Zilonka, CP has wide experience in teaching and conducting retreats for religious and laity. His background is in Biblical Studies, holding degrees from Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Gregorian University. He is a member of the Passionist Preaching Team of his province and serves on his Provincial Council. In the spirit of his community s charism, his preaching ministry gives particular attention to the spiritual journey we all share in God s provident love. ++++++++ Preached Retreat October 19 to 26, 2013 Theme: Seasons of Your Life We will be reflecting on our lives in relation to the seasons (spring, summer, how their unfolding has effected our relationship with God, others, ourselves and our world.) Presenter: Margaret Ellen Burke, SC, a New York Sister of Charity, has been giving retreats (directed, guided, preached) in the U.S. and Canada, and has trained and supervised Spiritual Directors for over thirty years. She was co-founder of the Center of Renewal and Education, a mobile center in the upper counties of the diocese of NY which focused on lay leadership formation and spiritual development. At present, she is ministering in Dutchess County and lives on the organic farm (CSA) sponsored by her community.
