The Healing of the Lunatick Boy Mark 9:14-29 and Matthew 17:14-21 and Luke 9:37-42 The Healing of the Lunatick Boy is the title for the outline I was given for this lesson because of the statement made in the parallel account in Matthew 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed Lunatick, lunacy, luna, as in lunar referring to the moon. A lunatick is one who suffers from lunacy. He is said to be moonstruck, exhibiting mad, insane behaviour usually attributed to the appearance of the full moon. This insane behaviour brought on by devil possession is what the child and his father have to deal with. Let s begin at verse 14. v14 Notice that the scribes were questioning Jesus disciples and not Jesus Himself. The scribes were His enemies. By this time Jesus already had several unpleasant encounters with the scribes to the extent that they accused Him of being possessed with Beelzebub, in Mark 3:22, and of casting out devils by the power of the prince of the devils. Since He successfully overcame their arguments and objections by the power and wisdom of His words they resorted to questioning His disciples. It s the same with unbelievers today. Instead of humbling themselves and going to God in prayer and searching the scriptures for answers to their arguments and objections they ll go to Christians with all kinds of foolish questions hoping to stump you and confuse you. What kind of fruit did Adam eat when he sinned? Where did Cain get his wife? Were there dinosaurs on Noah s ark? They ll ask every question but the one question that they should ask: What must I do to be saved? They already know what the Christian is going to tell them: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.

v15 Why were they greatly amazed? Remember that Jesus had just come down from the mount where He had been transfigured and three of His disciples beheld a glimpse of His glory in the previous chapter (Mark 9:2-3). When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai after meeting with God face-toface, his face shone with the glory of God. Could it be that as Jesus came down from the mount of transfiguration there was some residual trace of His glory still showing through Him? Is that what greatly amazed the multitude when they saw Him? I don t know. But whatever it was that greatly amazed them it was enough to cause them to run to Jesus just to greet him. Oh! That men today would run to the Saviour just to be in his presence. v16 Notice how Jesus did not acknowledge the salutations of the multitude running to meet Him. Notice how the Good Shepherd immediately interposed Himself between His sheep and the wolves in defense of His flock. That s how the pastors and the elders of a church emulate Jesus when grievous wolves, false teachers try to infiltrate a congregation with unbiblical doctrines and false teachings. It s their job to step in, confront those seducing spirits, and cut them off before they cause someone to depart from the faith (1Tim 4:1). v17 Notice how this man addressed Jesus: Master. That s what the Pharisees called Jesus. Master, not Lord. They acknowledged Him as a teacher, but never as Lord. And this man, who is in need of divine aid, addresses Jesus simply as: Master, as he might address any of the scribes or Pharisees. v17 Observe his statement: I have brought unto thee my son There s something of a high-handed tone in that statement as if he were doing Jesus a favor by bringing his devil-possessed boy before the Lord.

v17 Note also that the spirit possessing the boy is dumb. Which is unusual given that in so many other instances of devil possession seen in the Holy Bible these unclean spirits seem to have a lot to say. But though this spirit possessing the boy could not speak it is particularly malicious. v18 It taketh him, so the boy is definitely not in control. It tears him, it causes the boy to foam at the mouth, gnash with his teeth, and pine away Verse 22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him Devil possession is not something most of us observe here in western society. But if you talk to any of our missionaries who minister in places like Africa, South America, certain Caribbean islands or anywhere on the earth where there is little or no gospel light they ll have plenty of testimonies to share with you about people being possessed with and oppressed by evil spirits. Here in the west that danger can be found in Ouija boards, tarot cards, New Age philosophy which is Hinduism repackaged to appeal to a western audience, and the Wiccan religion which is witchcraft. Growing up in New York in Washington Heights, I saw the effect evil spirits have on the minds and hearts of people who were involved in Santeria, which is the Roman Catholic religion mixed with the beliefs of African voodoo. I have seen some of this first-hand. God s commandment in Deuteronomy 18 is to not allow anyone to get you involved with that stuff! If you do, you won t control it. It will control you. v18 and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. I SPAKE to thy disciples that they SHOULD cast him out. Not, I pleaded with thy disciples for help. Not, I begged thy disciples for assistance. But: I SPAKE to thy disciples that they SHOULD cast him out.

Prov 16:18 Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. This man approached Jesus disciples and then Jesus Himself with the wrong attitude. He doesn t ask for help. He demands it! How often do people approach God in prayer with an attitude that God should give them whatever they demand. No lowliness of mind. No humbleness of heart. No meekness of spirit. Jesus said: Matt 11:29 learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart Some weeks ago a woman I spoke with told me that she made a recent request of God. She said: I decreed it. Therefore, I know I m going to get it. That s a far cry from Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. The proper approach to God is in the fear of the Lord, and coming to Him humbly, and asking, not demanding. v19 O faithless generation! Here is the condemnation, not only of the faithlessness of this man, but of the faithlessness of the entire nation of Israel. A generation is not a certain number of years. A generation is a race of people, a nation of people. And this nation s lack of faith in their Messiah, Jesus Christ, continues to this day. This condemnation is upon everyone whether Jew or Gentile. People are not condemned because they lie or steal or curse or fornicate or commit adultery or murder.

Jesus Christ ALREADY paid for the sins the of the whole world on the cross. 1John 2:1 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world. People are condemned to hell and the lake of fire because they don t believe that. They don t believe that Jesus already paid for their sins. They don t believe that there s nothing more that needs to be done to atone for sin. All sin has already been atoned for on the cross. The penalty of sin has already been paid on the cross. God has only one requirement in order for you and I to have eternal life. Faith in His Son Jesus Christ. No faith in Jesus Christ is the condemnation! John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. That s the condemnation! Unbelief is the condemnation! Religion is just as much a denial of Jesus Christ as atheism. Atheism says, There is no God. Religion says, There is no God who can deliver my soul unless I do my part also. Both are a denial of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross in paying for the sins of the whole world. Both atheism and religion constitute faithlessness. And faithlessness is what Jesus is dealing with here.

v19 bring him unto me. This is the solution to all of our problems. That we bring all of our burdens and cares to Jesus. This is also the call to the Christian. We are to bring the lost to Christ. We do that when we testify, with our mouths, how Jesus saved us. And we tell people that, Just as Jesus saved my soul, He can save your soul also. v20 And they brought him unto Him This is where the Christian brings the lost soul. We bring lost souls to Christ. We preach Jesus Christ. We don t preach religion. We don t preach politics. We don t preach social reform. We stay on focus. We keep the main thing, the main thing. We keep Christ preeminent in our testifying. We preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified. v20 And they brought him unto him: AND WHEN HE SAW HIM, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. All Jesus had to do was to look upon the possessed child and the evil spirit reacted violently. There are people in the world who despise Christians so much that they can t stand to be around them. To the extent that they can t even hold a decent conversation with you without raising their voice and getting angry. They re like the evil spirit inside this child. Wickedness cannot stand to be in the presence of righteousness.

v21 Jesus question here testifies of His humanity. He had to ask the child s father how long the child had been possessed because He didn t know. Jesus, though fully God and fully man, had to bear the limitations of being a man in order to identify with us in our daily sufferings. Hebrews 4:15 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. v22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but IF THOU CANST DO ANY THING, have compassion on us, and help us. If thou canst do any thing? This man is still seeking help for his son: have compassion on us, and help us. But he doubts that Jesus can really help him. If thou canst do any thing? First he seeks help demanding. Now he seeks help doubting. Jesus gives him the right response in verse 23 which is the key to this entire passage of scripture: v23 There is the call to faith. This is key to the Christian life. Faith in Jesus. Sinner, do you see your need to be saved? You can be saved when you put your faith in Jesus. Christian, do you see your need to live a holy life? You can live a holy life when you put your faith in the word of God and obey it. Thus saith the Lord, All things are possible to him that believeth.

v24 First this man sought help demanding. Then he sought help doubting. Now he seeks help despairing. Finally, this man brings his petition to Jesus with the correct attitude. He properly calls Jesus, Lord. His crying out and open display of tears shows that, in his desperation, he put away his pride and now approaches God in humility. Psalms 10:17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: In his despairing cry the father of the child confesses two things to Jesus. Yes, I believe and yes, I m weak in faith. And he pleads for the Lord s help to overcome his weakness of faith. Can any of us identify with this man? In a moment of despair, when we are beseeching God to give us a Yes answer to that prayer, is it not the nature of our flesh to doubt if God really wants to help us at all? When people are in trouble they will exhaust every human resource at their disposal to get them out of trouble. And it s not until they completely exhaust every human device available that they will humble themselves, and pray, and seek God s face for help. God shouldn t be our last resort. If we re going to give Christ the preeminence in our lives, Colossians 1:18, then we must always come to the Lord first, in prayer. This man s plea for help remains unchanged. But his attitude towards Jesus has changed from haughtiness to humility. His perception of Jesus has changed from merely seeing Him as a Master to confessing who Jesus really is. Lord.

NOW Jesus can answer this father s prayer because he finally approached the Lord in the right way. And the Lord mercifully does so immediately v25-27 Genesis 18:14 asks the question: Is anything too hard for the LORD? What did Jesus just say in verse 23? If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth. Jesus took him by the hand, lifted him up; and he arose. And on that note v27 There are four times in the gospel accounts (not counting the duplicate parallel passages) where Jesus either healed someone or raised someone from the dead by His spoken word and the Holy Bible says that they arose. One was sick with a great fever. Simon s wife s mother in Luke 4:39. One was sick with the palsy. The paralytic man who was borne of four in Mark 2:12. One was possessed with a devil. The lunatick child in Mark 9:27. One was dead. The twelve year old daughter of the ruler of the synagogue in Mark 5:42. Jesus raised them all by His word and every one of them arose. The lesson there for us is If you re sick with sin and if you re sick of your sin, the word of God can heal you. If you re not saved and still dead in your trespasses and sin, the word of God can heal you.

If you re backsliding in your sin you need to block out every distraction and saturate your mind and your heart with every word in the Holy Bible in order to get back on the narrow way. If you re still dead in your sins you need to block out every distraction and saturate your mind and your heart with every word in the Holy Bible in order to realize the danger that you re in and become saved. Since they were of the nation of Israel, an earthly people with earthly promises, Jesus raised them physically by His word. Since we are the church, the body of Christ, a spiritual people with spiritual promises, Jesus raises us spiritually by His word. v28-29 Sure they asked Jesus privately. They were embarrassed that they couldn t cast the devil out of the child and they couldn t understand why not. In verse 29 Jesus explains that it takes spiritual power to deal with evil spirits. In prayer we abandon faith in our flesh. In fasting we subdue the needs and desires of the flesh which distract us from making supplication unto God. Why are prayer and fasting essential in spiritual warfare? For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. Eph 6:12 But there is one more reason why they couldn t cast out the evil spirit. Matthew 17:19-20 Because of your unbelief Unbelief keeps sinners from being reconciled to God through the blood of His Son Jesus Christ.

Unbelief keeps sinners out of heaven. Unbelief damns the human soul. Unbelief keeps the saved man immature and fruitless. Remember, Jesus made that statement Because of your unbelief to His disciples. They believed in Jesus. But they didn t believe Jesus. They didn t believe that He would do what He said He would do. Don t be like them. Jesus WILL DO everything the Holy Bible says He will do. John 20:27 be not faithless, but believing. Amen.
