A Message from the Stewardship Committee By Rick & Elaine Cira As Rick and I began planning for our move to Kent Island from Shady Side, Maryland, an important part of this planning was finding a church home. It was our desire to find a church where we would be welcomed and have an active church life as we had in our old church. We began by looking at the websites of all the churches on the island to learn about their mission statements and their ministries. We are thankful that God led us to Kent Island United Methodist Church six years ago. KIUMC has provided all that we have needed to grow in Christ, through study, worship, and service. We both have been serving in a variety of areas in the church through the years, which challenges us to mature in our faith. Because we have given our lives to our Savior, it is out of this deep love we have for God that we want to give our time, talent, and gifts. We have practiced tithing since we were married eleven years ago and it has become a natural part of our lives. What we are working on now is really testing ourselves with giving more than our tithe. It is a work in progress and we welcome our brothers and sisters who have experienced the joy of giving in this way to share their experience with us. This is the first of the monthly articles from the Stewardship Committee. We hope you look forward to more articles like these and share your stories of your stewardship experiences in the future. Following Jesus 3rd Annual Reunion Dinner/Gathering Attention all Following Jesus Classes! Please come out and join all of us (Leaders/Teachers) for a very special evening. We are gathering in Fellowship Hall for dinner and storytelling on Saturday, January 27th, from 5:00-7:30pm. We will provide a buffet-style meal, and ask everyone to bring a side dish or dessert. This is an evening for all of us to get together and fellowship in love and laughter. Please see the Following Jesus team in Fellowship Hall for sign up and more details, starting on January 7, 2018. I would also like to invite anyone who is seriously considering taking the class starting in February 2018. It is our prayer that we will show what Following Jesus is really all about... -Ron Weisman Please contact Ron for more information or to RSVP at rontps@atlanticbb.net by January 20, 2018. 3

Jesus Birthday Party The Children s Sunday School program had a terrific time celebrating Jesus birthday! Many thanks to all who volunteered and all who donated items to make this event a success! 4

Our Mission in Roots Student Ministries is as stated below... We want to see Jesus making a move in the hearts of teenagers in this county and all around the world. As we kick off a new year we are also kicking off a new season for Student Ministries. We are changing things up and adding a little more to our Sunday morning Youth time and changing the time. Sunday School is going to be renamed Roots Sunday Mornings and begin at 10:45am- 12:15pm. This time is set up for students to engage in worship, a mini message, small groups, and games. They will have more time with leaders and each other, learning about the bible and how it relates to their everyday. We will begin this new format January 21st, 2018, following Youth Sunday!!!! Youth Rally Thousands of youth and youth leaders around the eastern shore and further join together each January to learn more about Jesus. We have 37 attending from our Youth Ministry. When we come back we will be sharing our experience at the Rally!!! First, I ask that you join us in prayer as we attend Ocean City Youth Rally this weekend (Jan. 5 th -7 th ). Second, I ask that you join us in prayer as we continue to prepare our hearts and minds to lead all 3 worship services on January 14th. Third, come join us January 14th to see and hear what the students of KIUMC have encountered over this weekend and what Jesus is doing in their lives. We look forward to seeing you then! 5

What Sweeter Music Our choir and instrumental accompaniment blessed us with a beautiful Christmas Cantata at our December 17 th worship services. 6

Our Children s Choir debuted on December 3 rd as they joined with our Adult Choir and wowed us with an amazing rendition of Away In a Manger. and we have discovered the world s tiniest Hand Bell Choir fan! The Lord has blessed us with an extraordinary amount of talent in this congregation. Thank you, all of you who share your gifts with us! 7

The Case For Christ Lenten Study with Pastor Mark Introducing Life Groups You are invited to join the upcoming six-week study of "The Case for Christ" led by Pastor Mark. "The Case for Christ" is the captivating true story of Lee Strobel, atheist journalist, and his attempt to disprove the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each Sunday for 6 weeks in February and March, Pastor Mark will explore some aspect of the story during his Sunday morning sermon. Then during the week we will gather in small groups (now called "Life Groups") to participate in this study with video clips, a personal workbook and more! These groups will gather Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Wednesday evening and other times throughout the week at church and in homes so no one will be left out. Please sign up for a Life Group as soon as possible! And invite friends, family and neighbors to join your small group for this fantastic study even if they do not currently attend our church. Everyone is welcome! This study launches "Life Groups" at KIUMC for the future- a time to gather for fun, food, fellowship and the opportunity to grow in your Christian faith. Want more information? Looking for a great way to make new friends and grow personally? Sign up to host or join a Life Group for this terrific study, "The Case for Christ." Contact Linda or Reen Waterman, our new Small Group/Discipleship Coordinators, at Lifegroups@kiumc.org. You'll be glad you did! Please be sure to welcome Reen and Linda Waterman as our new Discipleship Coordinators, and feel free to go to them with any questions or feedback you might have. 8

Church Watch It seems incomprehensible that a church congregation should need to have a plan of action in case of an active shooter situation, but one need only to watch the evening news to see that this, unfortunately, is the reality of the world in which we now live. It is because of this that Sheriff Gary Hofmann and Lt. Dwayne Embert shared their Church Watch program with us and other community churches last month. Sheriff Hoffman and Lt. Embert advised the group on a variety of different strategies for preventing and dealing with emergency situations, to include not only an active shooter, but in the event of a fire or natural disaster. By having an emergency plan, knowing how to watch for and prevent such incidents from happening, and continuing a partnership with the Sheriff s Office, our congregants can continue to feel secure and safe when they come to worship. So we prayed to our God, and set a guard as a protection against them day and night. -Nehemiah 4:9 Greetings Across the Globe Our 2 nd - and 3 rd - grade Sunday School class filled four Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes this season! They included a Christmas greeting in the form of this photograph in each box. Praise God for the way our children are reaching out to others! 9

Dinners For Eight (D48) is a fun and exciting new way to connect with people from KIUMC. If you d like to meet people in our church in a casual and relaxed atmosphere, then this group is for you. Q: What exactly is Dinners for Eight (D48)? Q: How does D48 work? Simply fill out the sign-up form online or in the Fellowship Hall between Sunday services. You can sign up a singles or couples. Everyone is welcome! Once groups are formed, lead hosts will be selected for each group. They will contact the members to arrange the details of the first gathering. If you are interested in being a lead host, please indicate on the sign-up form. Q: How are D48 groups formed? Groups may be comprised of all couples, two couples and four singles, one couple and six singles, etc. It all depends on who signs up. The mystery is part of the excitement! Q: Who cooks the meals? Everyone! We think potluck dinners are the best way to go. Typically, the host provides the main dish, and the group members bring appetizers, salad and dessert to round out the meal. You can even pick a theme night, (i.e. Italian night, Mexican night, Soup night, etc), and everyone can bring a dish that goes with the theme. Q: When do we begin? Sign-ups start mid-january, either online at kiumc.org, or in Fellowship Hall between services starting Jan. 21 After sign-ups are complete, groups will be formed and you will hear from the lead host to set up your first dinner, around late February or March. Dinners for Eight is for EVERYONE! We are a big church and it s often difficult to meet new people. These dinners will provide singles and couples an opportunity to share a family meal as a church family. Groups plan their own meals and get together once a month for four consecutive months. You share meals at participants homes, local restaurants or wherever the group decides. The emphasis is on fun and fellowship, so you don t have to be a gourmet cook to participate. Q: Will there be separate groups for singles and couples? No, our intention is to mix everyone together. Q: This is sounding better and better! What about families with children? Your group will determine the answer here, bearing in mind that your preference for the kind of group you are interested in will have been taken into account initially. Please be sure to indicate your group-type preference on the sign-up form. Q: What happens after our final gathering? Hopefully, you will have had a wonderful experience and decide to continue to meet as a group outside of D48. You can also sign up for another round with another group. For more info about Dinners for Eight, email questions to D48@kiumc.org 10
