CHILDREN S MESSAGE Rev. English #2233 TFWS Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. BAPTISM Sonia Juliette Hovey (see insert) I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. OUR MISSION & COMMON LIFE We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. Thanks be to God! WE HEAR GOD S WORD Michael Lamb ANTHEM The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director David Kossoff, Oboe Be Thou My Vision (John Rutter) Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou my breast-plate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise: be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart: O Sov reign of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, thou heaven s bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict ry is won; great heart of mine own heart whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O ruler of all. INTRODUCTION SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM Sunday, August 20, 2017 Parents respond in bold italics. Congregation responds with words printed in bold type. Rev. Patricia Farris Brothers and Sisters, from the beginnings of Christianity, baptism has been our entrance into the family of faith. We believe baptism is a visible sign of the grace and love of God at work in our lives. Through this gift of grace, we enter into a special relationship with Christ. We are marked as his follower and welcomed as part of the universal church. We believe that Jesus gives children a special place in the family of faith. He said to us: Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. PRESENTATION Michael Lamb, Lay Leader I am pleased to present to you Sonia Juliette Hovey for Baptism. THOSE TO BE BAPTIZED (Questions to the Parents and Godparents) Rev. Farris Do you believe in God the source, the fountain of life; and in Christ, the offspring of God, embodied in Jesus of Nazareth and in the church; and in the liberating Spirit of God, the wellspring of new life? We do. Rev. Robert English On behalf of the whole church, I ask you: Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you of new life in Christ, resisting evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? We do. Rev. Farris Will you nurture Sonia in Christ s holy church, that by your teaching and example she may be guided to accept God s grace for herself, to profess her faith openly, and to lead a Christian life? We will. over

(To the Congregation) Do you, as Christ s body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Sonia in your care? Michael Lamb With God s help we will live in the example of Christ, growing in our love for God and for one another. We will surround Sonia with a community of grace and forgiveness, that she may grow in her trust of God and learn how to serve others. We will pray for her, that she may walk in love following Jesus in the way that leads to life. BAPTISM Sonia Juliette I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN #611 United Methodist Hymnal Child of Blessing, Child of Promise (verses 1 & 2) INTRODUCTION Rev. English Michael Lamb Members of the household of faith, I commend Sonia to your love and care. Do all in your power to increase her faith, confirm her hope, and perfect her in love. We give thanks to God because you are a gift to us and we welcome you in Christian love. As members with you in the body of Christ and in this community of faith, we renew our promise to participate faithfully in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE WE OFFER OUR GIFTS & OURSELVES Your generous gifts support the ministries and outreach of the church. Farris Creator of all humankind, you call us to be caring and hospitable toward strangers in our midst. May we care for all our neighbors as for ourselves, that we may know the blessing of giving.
