FROM FR. JOE Change is never easy, but sometimes we need to look at different ways of being Church. There were two requests I received and two other changes I have been thinking over. I was able to discuss it with a number of parishioners and with the councils at St. John s. I would have liked to have discussed it with the councils at Cathedral but I needed to make a decision on at least one of these issues. Sometimes in addition to working harder, one needs to work smarter. To this end, it was suggested we have one bulletin for both parishes. It could save some time for one of my staffs, and save a little money. We have been struggling a little bit at St. John s to find enough bulletin advertisers and it was suggested this would be a way to be more efficient. Secondly, one of our parishioners requested an evening Tuesday Mass around 5:30 pm rather than our Mass which would be more worker friendly. Also, it seems to me and some others, that our Masses, both at Cathedral and St. John s, struggle to find adequate ministers and to have a consistently strong spirit of participation. I started to think of just having a 4 pm Mass, six months of the year at Cathedral, and six months of the year at St. John s. With our evening worshipers coming together, we would increase attendance and provide more ministers so that a stronger spirit of participation on evenings would help us grow both our parishes. Finally, I shared my concerns about Holy Week. It is common practice amongst linked parishes to have one Holy Thursday and one Easter Vigil celebration while keeping two separate Good Friday celebrations. I really would like to celebrate Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil with all my parishioners from both my parishes by combining these two services and holding them at the Cathedral annually. We could then have ministers and parishioners from both parishes participate and be together for these important celebrations. These services also tend to be lightly attended so this would hopefully help increase attendance and participation. As it stands now, I am not able to be with my Cathedral parishioners for these two important celebrations. After discussion, a little research and some feedback, here is what I would like to do. We will keep the two bulletins separate. With a little help from all of you, we will find enough sponsors for our bulletins. Also, separate bulletins will better enable us to publicize the events going on at our two parishes. Secondly, we learned there is an evening Mass on Tuesdays at St. John the Baptist parish. So, we encourage parishioners who are looking for an evening daily Mass, to avail themselves of this opportunity. In regard to our Masses, although our numbers are sometimes low, making a strong joyful sense of worship more challenging, we are going to continue to try to grow these two Masses. I continue to ask that more come forward to serve, usher, distribute communion and proclaim God s Word. Let s keep trying to build up these Masses, especially by our full active participation. Let s not be afraid to let the person next to us hear our voices during the Mass through spirited responses and participation! We may revisit this issue again in the future. Finally, in regard to Holy Week, I m going to ask that we keep two separate Good Friday services, but that we work together and have one Holy Thursday and one Easter Vigil celebration. I really think it is important for me to be with all my parishioners who participate in these liturgies and would love to see us come together as two parishes for these events. Already, I am very pleased with how well we pray together the Stations of the Cross during Lent and am confident we can do the same for the Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil services. I really hope I can receive everyone s heartfelt support on this. God bless. ~Fr. As they look, they believe and do not question, as their symbolic gifts bear witness: incense for God, gold for a King, myrrh for One who is to die. ~Saint Peter Chrysologus As the Christmas season draws to a close, take time this week to look at Jesus as the magi did. They recognized not just a tiny King, but God Himself, our Savior. Bring the wonder of this great mystery into your ordinary time, rejoicing that Jesus is with us always!
