January 12, 2014 Wedding at Cana John 2:1-11

Grace Lutheran Church January 12, 2014 9:30 a.m. Welcome to worship at Grace! May this time of gathering in Christian community bless you and enable you to be a blessing to others. Special welcome to Newcomers in the name of Christ! We pray that our time of worship would give you the chance to offer your prayer and praise, hear anew the Word of God, and receive our Lord s presence in Holy Communion. The order of worship, and many of the prayers, can be found in the worship bulletin. Hymns and worship music can be found in the red worship books. Hymns are in the back of the worship book, with the large numbers at the top of the page. Service music is in the front of the worship book, with the small numbers on the bottom of the page. Every Sunday we share Holy Communion. All are welcome to the Lord s Table. When invited by the ushers, please come forward using the center aisle. To receive the bread, hold out your hand, palm up. The minister will place the bread in your hand along with the words "The Body of Christ, given for you." You may respond, "Amen," or "Thanks be to God." Standing at the cup, dip the bread into the wine or juice. The Communion Server will say, "The blood of Christ, shed for you." You may respond "Amen," or "Thanks be to God," before consuming the wine/juice-soaked bread. Then, return to your seat by way of the side aisles. Note: Grape juice (lighter in color) is available as well as wine (darker in color). Gluten-free wafers are available on the table between the servers---after receiving the words of promise, simply take a wafer, dip it into the wine/juice also provided on the table, eat both and return to your seat by way of the side aisles." * Please stand as you are able. 2

C: And also with you. Confession and Forgiveness P: Let us prepare our hearts and minds for worship as we confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. P: God of promise and new life, C: Too often we have failed to place our trust in you. We have let our fears and resentments guide us. We have neglected the needs of others. Forgive us for all we have thought, done, and said. Forgive us for what we have failed to do or say. Restore us to right relationship with you. Amen. P: In the mercy of Almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to dies for us, and for His sake, He forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister in the Church of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hymn of Praise Glory to God p. 148 Welcome and Announcement Installation Prayer 3

Baptismal Hymn #781 Children of the Heavenly Father vs 1 & 2 Baptism of Olivia Grace Baumann Baptismal Hymn #781 Children of the Heavenly Father vs 3 & 4 Anthem "Come To The Wedding" Scripture John 2:1-11 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. When the wine ran out, Jesus mother said to him, They don t have any wine. Jesus replied, Woman, what does that have to do with me? My time hasn t come yet. His mother told the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Nearby were six stone water jars used for the Jewish cleansing ritual, each able to hold about twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water, and they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, Now draw some from them and take it to the headwaiter, and they did. The headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine. He didn t know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. The headwaiter called the groom and said, Everyone serves the good wine first. They bring out the second-rate wine only when the guests are drinking freely. You kept the good wine until now. This was the first miraculous sign that Jesus did in Cana of Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks Be to God. 4

This will give the church office time to prepare the annual report for the meeting on Sunday, February 16, 2014. Thank you! Ruth Circle will meet tomorrow January 13th at 1:00. This is a change of date from last week. Ministry Opportunities Talkpoints next Sunday Martin Luther King day celebration. Guest speaker Lucy Zanders, executive director of the Teresa Living Center on Jessamine St. Lucy lived in Memphis Tennessee in 1968 and was there in March during the sanitation workers strike and the assassination of Martin Luther King. She has also taken an active part in our local MLK annual breakfast. She is a member of our neighbor Progressive Baptist church. 8

XYZs (Extra Years of Zest) is a group for anyone age 55 and over, or anyone interested in the monthly event. Game day at the XYZ's is Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the South Tower Room at Grace. We play a great game called Bunco which is easy to learn and you get a chance to visit with multiple new partners. Treats and beverages will complete the great time always done in January. (Note: this is a change of date from January 9th) The Mission Of the Month for January 2014 is Grace s Community Care Fund. This was formerly known as the Good Samaritan Fund but the name was changed as to avoid confusion with Good Samaritan Lutheran Church housed at Grace. As many of you are aware, there is great need within the local community surrounding Grace as well as Grace s members. The church office and our Pastor receive requests from individuals several times per week. These requests may include gas cards so that they may make a job interview or a medical appointment, immediate food or personal needs to bridge the gap until they can become integrated into the appropriate system, as well as a variety of specific needs. Please support this fund so that Grace will be able to help as many as possible in our community and to reach out to others in Christian love. Please use your multi-purpose blue envelope and check the Mission of the Month box. Checks should be made payable to Grace. Thank you. Stewardship Notes When God told the people of Israel, `I will be your God and you shall be my people, they did not respond by thinking, `Aw, I knew there would be a catch! God saved us but now we have to be God s people! No. Being God s People was what redemption is all about. It wasn t payback for salvation; it was salvation. (Giving to God, Mark Allan Powell p. 37) Musical Notes Teachers influence their students, whatever the setting is. It happened in the late 1800 s when Sir Charles Stanford taught such famous composers as Ralph Vaughan Williams who composed hymns such as #422 For All the Saints and Gustav Holst who composed #294 In the Bleak Midwinter. John Wilson asked Fred Pratt Green to write a new text to Stanford s hymn Engelberg, published in 1971, to be used at the Methodist Church Music Society conference in England. This hymn nicely justifies music being an important part of church services. 9
