Our Worship of God April 9, 2017 9:15 am ( Indicates those who are able, please stand) ~ The Sixth Sunday of the Season of Lent~ Poured Out: Blood Welcome and Announcements Scripture Reading John 12:12-15 Michael McEntyre Julie Walker The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord the King of Israel! Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt!

Palm Procession Sing Hosanna, Sing! Arr. Raney Children s Choir Bria Jones, conductor Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, lift your voices, let them ring! Sing hosanna, sing hosanna to the King of kings! Open wide the gates of Jerusalem, lift his banner high forever more. Sing as he rides through the streets in majesty. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, lift your voices, let them ring! Sing hosanna, sing hosanna to the King of kings! Sing hosanna, sing hosanna, sing to the King of kings! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Song Celebrating Our King King of My Heart Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Passing of the Peace Prayer (unison) Lord Jesus Christ, we praise you with heart and life and voice, not only with outward signs such as palm branches or the occasional Hosanna, but with lives truly turned toward you. It seems such a distance from this present day Palm Sunday to that day when you entered Jerusalem with the shouts of the crowd ringing in your ears. Welcomed as a king, yet riding on a lowly donkey. Greeted with cheers and acclamations which were so soon to turn to jeers and condemnation.

From this side of the resurrection, we confidently believe that we could never have been part of the jeering crowd but would we, if we had been there? Meditation for Preparation (unison) Make no mistake, there was blood spilled in that week. Sometimes it is easier to speak of the less violent elements of the story moving from Palm Sunday to Easter in a leap. But part of understanding the radical nature of the deathdefying resurrection is to claim the gut-wrenching pain of the political execution that was Good Friday. Forces of power were at stake, Jesus and his topsy-turvy proclamations of God s reign, God s power, God s love for the least was seen as a threat to the status quo. In a culture of retributive justice, someone has to pay. It is difficult to face the element of blood poured out on the cross just as it is difficult for us to name and claim and lament the injustices the blood spilled in violent ways still today. Song of Sacrifice Song of Remembrance At the Cross (Love Ran Red) My Victory Gospel Reading Julie Walker Matthew 27:27-41, 45-54 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor s headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who

passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him. From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, This man is calling for Elijah. At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him. Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said, Truly this man was God s Son! The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to Christ. Roman Centurion, executioner of Jesus Steven Hoell Noah Hartsfield, reader Prayer of Confession (unison) Loving God, you rode a donkey and came in peace, humbled yourself and gave yourself for us. We confess our lack of humility. As you entered Jerusalem, the crowds shouted Hosanna: Save us now! On Good Friday they shouted Crucify! We confess our praise is often empty. We sing Hosanna, but cry Crucify. As the crowd laid their palms in front of you, you took no glory for yourself.

We confess that we want to be accepted and take the easy way. We do not stay true to your will. Forgive us, Lord, and help us to follow in the way of obedience. Amen. Offertory The Wonderful Cross Message Roman Centurion Carol McEntyre Prayer: Extravagant Love (responsive) Extravagant God, who gave all, even your life, without calculating the cost, your love is everywhere. You do not hold your love back to be admired from a distance but pour your precious gift out for us at great price. Like blood dripping from your side, it spills from your heart into ours. So may we love purely, dangerously, wildly, extravagantly, creating a scandal of grace. Let us love for love s sake, seeing each day as the chance to do a spontaneous, irrational, risky act of love in Christ s name whose love so amazing, so divine, demands our souls, our lives, our all. Amen. Song of Commitment The Old Rugged Cross Benediction
