The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption 1111 Gough Street, San Francisco, Ca 94109 (415) 567-2020 www.stmarycathedralsf.org Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2011 MOST REVEREND GEORGE H. NIEDERAUER Archbishop of San Francisco MONSIGNOR JOHN TALESFORE Pastor and Rector Our Stolen Bell Has Been Recovered! We are very grateful to Inspector Danker, the SFPD, the citizen who found the bell, Mr. Neil Gertner for providing photographs of the bell and Mr. John Mulligan from Grand Industries who has offered to help with the transportation of the bell back to San Francisco. Thank you for everyone s prayers asking for the return of this important part of Archdiocese and San Francisco history. O Christ May all evil and negative influence be removed from this bell which was dedicated to your service. You are the example of divine love. Pour down once again your blessing on this bell, that its voice may again one day rouse the hearts of your faithful, to the discernment of and the will to imitate, your strength, your wisdom, your loving kindness, your beauty, your justice, your devotion and your guiding power, so that your servants whom you called to be made perfect in you, may attain the glory which you have prepared for them. May this bell again one day ring out for the healing of Christ s faithful followers; that those who hear it may be helped and strengthened in soul and body. To the glory of God Most High, and of his servants: Mary, Queen of heaven, Saints Joseph, Francis and Patrick, We gratefully receive this bell again. May its sound one day peal forth forever to the praise of God and the blessing of those who hear it. O God who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Book of the Names of the Dead Especially in the month of November are the dead remembered in prayer. During that month, many churches have the customs of giving a place of honor to a book in which parishioners write the names of their dead. This book will be placed at the Shrine of the Crucifixion located on the left side of the main entrance to the Cathedral. The book will be kept open from All Saints Day until Thanksgiving. Please take some time to write the names of loved ones in this special book of remembrance during the month of November. Archdiocese of S.F. Media Release: ALLELUIA! HISTORIC BELL STOLEN FROM ST. MARY S CATHEDRAL FOUND IN SALVAGE YARD (October 26, 2011) SAN FRANCISCO - Police informed staff at the Chancery Offices of the Archdiocese of San Francisco that they had found the 5,300 pound, historic bell that had been stolen last Sunday from the grounds of St. Mary s Cathedral. The Inspector in charge of the case said that an informant reported the bell to be at 9th and Pine in West Oakland near a salvage yard and the Port of Oakland. The police said the bell is dirty and covered with dirty canvas tarps, but it is intact. Inspector Brian Danker, of the SFPD said that the bell could have been very close to being broken down for its metal value. Inspector Danker is credited also for the recovery of a rare $23,000 violin stolen from the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco earlier this year. There are currently no suspects. This is wonderful news, a mini-miracle of sorts, for the parishioners of the Cathedral and all Catholics in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, said George Wesolek, Director of Communications. The wide press coverage of the theft helped make it harder to get away with this. Our thanks to the public for their proactive response, the press and especially the effective work of the San Francisco Police Department. Now we need to find a way to bring the bell back to its place at the Cathedral. WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER THOSE WHO ARE SICK Mary Martins, Kathleen Fox, Abelardo Alberto, Joseph Sipley, Juanita Medrano, Theresa Archuleta, Joann Nistas, Tuty Lockhart, Walter Eipp, Christine Gawley, Most Rev.
