NOVEMBER 22, 2015 8:45 AM CHRIST THE KING/REIGN OF CHRIST

CHRIST THE KING/REIGN OF CHRIST November 22, 2015 8:45 am Worship Today is Christ the King Sunday, also known as Reign of Christ Sunday. This festival ends our marking of Ordinary Time after the Day of Pentecost, and moves us to the threshold of Advent, the season of hope for Christ s coming again at the end of time. The day centers on the crucified and risen Christ, whom God exalted to rule over the whole universe. As the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, Christ is the center of the universe, the ruler of all history, the judge of all people. In Christ all things began, and in Christ all things will be fulfilled. In the end, Christ will triumph over the forces of evil. This morning s processional hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 103 by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847), a Scottish poet and ordained minister. The familiar tune, Lauda Anima, was composed by John Goss in 1869 for this text. Goss (1800-1880) was a British church musician, organist, and educator, who served churches in London and taught at the Royal Academy of Music. WELCOME Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care and a worship education program for preschoolers are available in Building D during this service. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a largeprint bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY Largo George Friderick Handel *CALL TO WORSHIP One: Bless God, all people of faith and hope. God has looked on us with great favor. All: God is our refuge and strength in times of trouble. God is our guide and inspiration when things go well. One: God gives light to those who live in the shadows. God offers stillness amid the turbulence of our times. All: We live in covenant with God, who gives us the best. We are eager to give our best to God in return. One: By the tender mercy of our God, we meet for worship. God has brought the dawn of a new day for our use. All: Praise God for signs and wonders all around us. Praise God for peace and reconciliation. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #478 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven CALL TO CONFESSION lauda anima PRAYER OF CONFESSION All: Many times you have rescued us, O God. Yet we continue to wander away from your vision for us. We claim to be followers of Jesus, but we do not speak up when he is mocked. We do not respond when he summons us from the perilous byways we have chosen. Our words and deeds deny the faith we proclaim. [2] *Those who are able, please stand.

Silent confession One: God of all nations, All: deliver us from misplaced loyalties and unacknowledged sin. Forgive our foolish ways. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE toulon We give our minds to understand your ways, hands, eyes, and voice to serve your great design, heart with the flame of your own love ablaze, till for your glory all our powers combine. (may be found as stanza 2 of hymn #375) CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT READING Psalm 132:1-12 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. NEW TESTAMENT READING John 18:33-38 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. SERMON A Different Kind of King John Ryan *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. We believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Apostles Creed People have an idea that the preacher is an actor on a stage, and they are the critics, blaming or praising the preacher. What they don t know is that they are the actors on the stage; the preacher is merely the prompter standing in the wings, reminding them of their lost lines. Søren Kierkegaard [3]

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE nettleton O to grace how great a debtor daily I m constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above. (tune may be found as stanza 3 of hymn #356) The Christian life is an offering of one s self to God. In worship the people are presented with the costly selfoffering of Jesus Christ, are claimed and set free by him, and are led to respond by offering to him their lives, their particular gifts and abilities, and their material goods. PC(USA) Directory of Worship Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877 1933) was a German composer of considerable fame in the early twentieth century, best known for his compositions for organ and harmonium. After having served as a regimental musician during World War I, Karg- Elert was appointed instructor of music theory and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1919. Encouraged to compose by no less a figure than Edvard Grieg, one of his compositional heroes, Karg-Elert was also greatly influenced by the harmonic language of French Impressionism. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY King of Glory, King of Peace K. Lee Scott King of Glory, King of Peace, I will love thee; and that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou hast taught in thee we rest, thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the love of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou dids t clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou dids t hear me. Sev n whole days, not one in sev n, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heav n, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enroll thee; ev n eternity s too short to extol thee! *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *CLOSING HYMN #142 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Now Thank We All Our God coronation Sigfrid Karg-Elert As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world!
