Christ the King A Celebration of Christ s Reign in the Seasons of the Church Year FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH November 22, 2009

THE CHURCH YEAR For centuries, the Christian Church has worshiped according to the Church Year. The Church Year begins in December with the season of Advent. The first six months of the church year (December through May) follow the life of Christ from his birth until his suffering, death, and resurrection on Easter Sunday. The second six months of the church year (June through November) follow the teachings of Christ. We are now approaching the close of the Church Year and the beginning of another. To mark the end of this year, the Church celebrates the Season of Endtimes. Endtimes reminds us that the time is short, and our Savior is coming again soon. The Sundays in Endtimes: 1. Last Judgment, where we remember that Christ is coming to judge the living and the dead 2. Saints Triumphant, when we remember the eternal glory enjoyed by the saints in heaven glory prepared and waiting for us 3. Christ the King, when we remember that the entire Church Year celebrates the rule of Christ over our hearts now and forever.

CALL TO WORSHIP Crown Him with Many Crowns Christian Worship Hymn #341 C: (Sings) Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. Hark how the heav nly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, And hail him as they matchless king Through all eternity. RESPONSORY Crown him the Lord of love Behold his hands and side, Rich wounds yet visible a - bove, In beauty glorified. No angel in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his won dring eye at mysteries so bright. Crown him the Lord of heav n, Enthroned in worlds above; Crown him the King to whom is giv n The wondrous name of Love. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. P: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. C: To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father-- to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. P: The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. C: (Sings) Crown him the Lord of heav n, enthroned in worlds above; Crown him the King to whom is giv n the wondrous name of Love. Crown him with many crowns, as thrones before him fall; Crown him, ye kings, with many crowns, for he is King of all. PRAYER OF THE DAY 1

Luke 1:26-27, 30-33 ADVENT Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel Christian Worship Hymn #23 Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel. That mourns in lowly exile here Until the Son of God - appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you O Israel. Oh, come, O key of David, come, and open wide our heavn ly home. Make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you O Israel. Isaiah 9:6-7a CHRISTMAS Crown him the virgin s son, the God incarnate born. Joy To The World Christian Worship Hymn #62 Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let ev'ry heart prepare him room And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, wonders of his love. 2

Matthew 2:1-2 EPIPHANY Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways. As With Gladness Men of Old Christian Worship Hymn #83 As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold, As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright, So, most gracious Lord, may we Evermore your foll'wers be. As they offered gifts most rare At your cradle, rude and bare, So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin's alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to you, our heav'nly King. John 18:33-37 LENT Crown him the Lord of love - behold his hands and sides. O sacred head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded, With thorns your only crown, O sacred head, no glory Now from your face does shine; Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call you mine. O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Christian Worship Hymn #105 Lord, be my consolation, My shield when I must die; Remind me of your passion When my last hour draws nigh. My eyes will then behold you, Upon your cross will dwell; My heart will then enfold you- Who dies in faith dies well! 3

1 Corinthians 15:20-25 EASTER Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o er the grave. Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss, Alleluia! But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation has procured, Alleluia! Now above the sky he's King, Alleluia!
