Subject: Zechariah #15 Title: Zechariah Chapter Fourteen Text: Zechariah 14:1-21 Israel s Deliverance, the Coming and Reign of Messiah Introduction The last three verses of Chapter 13 are amplified in this next Chapter. This may be the most concise account of prophetical events with regards to the future of the nation of Israel. Much is said in the Old and New Testament concerning these events, but they are all summed up in the final 21 verses of the book of Zechariah. Outline of Chapter 14 I. Jerusalem Attacked, Spoiled and Delivered (1-3) II. The Second Coming of Christ (4-7) III. The Establishment of the Millennial Kingdom (8-11) IV. The Destruction of Jerusalem s Enemies (12-15) V. Millennial Worship and Government (16-21) I. Jerusalem Attacked, Spoiled and Delivered (14:1-3) Zechariah 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. v.1 - the day of the LORD - The in that day of Zechariah 13:2 is this day - the day of the Lord. This is the day when God has His way and men are silenced! It is not a specific 24 hour day, but a period of time. Malachi 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner s fire, and like fullers soap: Malachi 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 97

For more on the day of the Lord, see also Zephaniah 1:7-10,14,15,18; Amos 9:11-15; 5:18; Isaiah 2:10-22; 22:5; Revelation 19:11-21; Joel 1:15; 2:1. v.2 - I will gather all nations - God brings all these nations or peoples against Jerusalem to bring judgment upon Israel. At the same time, the nations will be judged for their hatred and anti-semitic behaviors (Matthew 24:9). God directs the confrontation. Zephaniah 3:8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. Joel 3:1 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, 2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. Joel 3:9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: 10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. 11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. 12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. 13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. Revelation 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. - the city shall be taken...houses rifled...women ravished - Before the Lord returns to rescue Israel, Jerusalem is plundered and half the people become prisoners of war. v.3 - Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight - The Lord will fight for Israel because He is still a man of war (Exodus 15:3). 98

Isaiah 26:21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. Micah 1:3 3 For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth. Zechariah 12:6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. 7 The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. 8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. II. The Second Coming of Christ (14:4-7) 4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. 6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: 7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. In the following verses, we see the place (4), results (4), purpose (5), manner (5) and time (6,7) of the Coming of Christ at the Second Advent. v.4 his feet shall stand...upon the mount of Olives...on the east - The Mount of Olives is where Christ ascended into Heaven after His Resurrection and is where He will return to (Acts 1:8-11). In studying 2 Samuel 15:30, Matthew 21:1; 24:3; 26:30; Ezekiel 11:23; 43:2, we can surmise that Christ will come to the east of Jerusalem, which is where the Mount of Olives is located. - shall cleave in the midst...there shall be a very great valley - A great earthquake like event will take place when Jesus steps down upon the Mount of Olives, producing a very great valley as a way of escape for those Jews left in the city of Jerusalem. 99

v.5 - ye shall flee...as ye fled...in the days of Uzziah - The panic that is created is reminiscent of an earthquake that took place in the days of King Uzziah, which the historical books of Kings and Chronicles do not mention, however, the prophet Amos does in the first verse of his writings, The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. - Azal - The valley is so great that it reaches to this place, but there is no other reference in the Bible as to where this is. - ye shall flee - This flight can be seen in other Scriptures, which the Lord will use to reestablish His relationship with Israel. Micah 7:13 Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings. 14 Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old. 15 According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous things. 16 The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf. 17 They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee. Hosea 2:14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. 15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. 16 And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali. 17 For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name. 18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. 19 And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. 20 I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD. Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 100

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. 5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. - the LORD...shall come, and all the saints with thee - These saints are the Old Testament believers taken up to Heaven after Christ s resurrection (Matthew 27:52-53) and ascension when He led captivity captive (Psalm 68:18; Ephesians 4:8), as well as New Testmaent believers who are raptured out to Heaven before the Tribulation period because 1 Thessalonians 5:9 says the Church is not appointed...to wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Revelation 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. Jude 14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, Deuteronomy 33:2 And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. - vs.6-7 - the light shall not be clear, nor dark - There is something very unusual about the light(ing) at this time. The following passages may provide some explanation. Isaiah 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 101

11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: Joel 2:10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: Joel 3:15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Revelation 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. Revelation 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. v.7 - at evening time it shall be light - More unusual lighting phenomena. Isaiah 30:26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. Isaiah 60:19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. III. The Establishment of the Millennial Kingdom (14:8-11) 8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. 102

9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. 10 All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king s winepresses. 11 And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. v.8 - in that day - vs.1,4,6,13,20 - living waters shall go out from Jerusalem - The land of Israel will be fertile, irrigated and physically more productive than ever before. Ezekiel 47:1-12 says it all. Ezekiel 47:1 Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. 2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. 3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. 4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins. 5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over. 6 And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. 7 Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. 8 Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. 9 And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. 10 And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. 11 But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt. 103

12 And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine. Of course, the spiritual application of living waters is important. John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) v.8 - former sea...hinder sea - Dead Sea and Mediterranean Sea v.9 - The Lord shall be King Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war...16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Isaiah 32:1-8 describes some of the millennial reign of Christ. Isaiah 32:1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. 2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. 3 And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken. 104

4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. 5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful. 6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. 7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. 8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand. See also Psalm 72:1-20; 47:7; 2:5-6; Zechariah 9:9; Luke 1:31-33. v.9 - one Lord...and his name one - No more false worship or polytheism. Exodus 20:1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. 12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God. v.10 - All the land shall be turned as a plain - This is a referrence to a physical change in the landscape or topography since many of the mountains and hills will diminish at the Second Advent, and this change in landscape produces a plain that stretches from Geba, which is about six miles north of Jerusalem to Rimmon that is about 33 miles southwest of Jerusalem. Ezekiel 38:19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. 105

Nahum 1:5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Amos 9:13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. v.10 - Jerusalem...shall be lifted up - Jerusalem will be exalted because it will be the highest reference point at that time. Micah 4:1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. Isaiah 2:3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. - from Benjamin s gate unto... - The limits of the exalted city will be from Benjamin s gate (north wall); the first gate (northeast corner); the corner gate (northwestern gate - 2 Kings 14:13; Jeremiah 31:38); the tower of Hananeel (Nehemiah 12:39), which was evidently at the opposite end, and the king s winepresses were located near the valley of Hinnom, south of the city. v.11 - but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited - The answer to prayer for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalms 122:6) will come at last with their King on the throne! Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. Jeremiah 32:37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: Jeremiah 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness. Ezekiel 28:25 Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. 106

26 And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God. Ezekiel 34:25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. IV. The Destruction of Jerusalem s Enemies (14:12-15) 12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. 13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. 14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance. 15 And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague. v.12 - this shall be the plague...their flesh shall consume away - We can only understand what is said here in light of the judgments spoken of in the Book of Revelation, specifically, the judgments of the seals, vials and trumpets. What will take place is almost indescribable, although some commentators equate this to the ravages of an atomic bomb. v.13 - in that day...a great tumult from the LORD - God will bring panic and confusion to Israel s enemies much like we read in Judges 7 with Gideon against the Midianites and in 1 Samuel 14 with Jonathan against the Philistines at Michmash, which is where we get the term mishmash that one dictionary defines as a confused mess. vs.14-15 - the wealth of all the heathen...shall be gathered - The results are that the wealth of the invading armies is lost to them and gathered up by Israel much like they spoiled the Egyptians at the Exodus (12:6). The enemies will also lose all their animals when this plague falls upon them, which was first seen in v.12. V. Millennial Worship and Government (14:16-21) 16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. 107

17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. 18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. 20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. v.16 - everyone that is left...which came against Jerusalem - The implication is that the devastation has been great. - shall go up...to worship the King, the LORD of hosts - Jerusalem becomes the religious capital of the world. Why is there any wonder at all the attention given to this one city in all of the world? The KING OF KINGS of Revelation 19:16 is the LORD of hosts. - to keep the feast of tabernacles - Spoken of again in vs.18 and 19. For more information on this feast, see Exodus 23:14-17; Leviticus 23:34-44; John 7:2; and Matthew 17:1ff. The feast of tabernacles signifies that God will come to dwell with man again. The Jews in the wilderness in the Exodus lived in tents or tabernacles with God leading them and living with them, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day (Deuteronomy 1:33). Jesus came to tabernacle with man at the First Advent and He will again in the Millennium. All will go to Jerusalem to celebrate the fact that God has come to dwell with man, and woe be to those who do not come to visit! vs.17-19 - whoso will not come up...upon them shall be no rain...there shall be the plague - Free will is still in operation in the Millennium, but with it comes God s judgment when exercised poorly - no worship, no rain, disease. vs.20-21 - HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD - Holiness will be the order of the day in the Millennium. Life will truly revolve around the reign of the King. The bells of the horses...the pots in the LORD S house...every pot in Jerusalem represents the fact that both secular and sacred, private and public, will be HOLY. The land will be cleansed, the people judged, the remnant survived, and the Lord comes to fulfill all of His promises to His elect. v.21 - there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD - This symbolizes the fact that there will be no compromise in the Millennium. Israel had tolerated the Canaanite to their demise, but no longer will this be tolerated, that is, compromise with the unholy and enemies of God. 108
