The Abundant Lite July 19, 2012 For Sunday, July 22nd From Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch "Come away...by yourselves and rest a while...he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them..." Jesus and his disciples have been busy, and the disciples are excited about their first experience of mission and ministry. Jesus then says something to the disciples, which we often ignore and do not heed. Jesus was concerned about His disciples well being. Taking time apart for self care was a lesson difficult to comprehend by many in times past as well as it is for contemporary folk. Retreats are one option as are vacations and the I like, re-creation. The concept of renewal and reloading are intrinsically central to all those words; however, Jesus presents us with a tension. They barely arrive and the crowds had already gathered. Jesus' reputation precedes him and so he teaches and heals and has compassion for all who await the coming of the kingdom of God. There are all sorts of tensions in our lives. We make lists and try to prioritize, 'what's most important', 'what can wait', 'what do I want to do', 'how do I want to spend my time'. We consider 'quality' time, a friend drops by unexpectedly and we have a 'to do' list a mile long. Jesus reminds us that this faith we proclaim is based in relationship. Jesus presents us with tensions and asks us "what is important'. Join us for worship this Sunday and listen as Jesus informs us concerning his priorities. Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch Featured Scripture Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick

in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. Parish Hall Upgrades Changes Are Happening in the Parish Hall thanks to the kind and generous gifts of time, talent and funds by numerous parishioners. The upgrades in Hogarth Hall include the Parlor (the room behind the sliding accordion doors) to create a user-friendly Adult Education Area. It will be painted, carpeted and have a new wall built to hide the stored chairs and tables. The closets have been cleaned and organized. We are also making changes in the Kitchen: A new center island and new movable cabinets will provide flexibility. They are lockable to assist in assuring security. The Restrooms are being thoroughly cleaned, painted and wallpapered. There is now a larger handicap stall in the women s room. The entry hall to the restroom will be cleared out and made more inviting. Finally, we are installing audio and video systems in the Main Hall and in the newly upgraded Adult Education Room. The large bulletin boards are being replaced with flat screen monitors that will provide current information about St. Paul s, our programs, parishioners, and activities. July will be a busy month for all these projects. Your participation is welcome and appreciated. Roger Allen, our Senior Warden, is coordinating these efforts, and he welcomes your contributions, comments, and support. Report Sexual Misconduct. As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe haven for everyone, please remember that our diocese values the tenet of our baptismal covenant to "respect the dignity of every human being." Part of the way we live into that is to train people in the prevention of sexual misconduct and to encourage all to report any misconduct. All reported incidents are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and confidentially. If you believe you have experienced sexual misconduct of any kind, please contact the Rev. Canon Suzann V. Holding immediately: sholding@edsd.org or 619-481-5452. Bullies Not Welcome Here At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying. Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable. [3]"It Gets Better" is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are. [4]"A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied" was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church. It is not enough to say "NO" to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
