What s the Difference? The Old Law & The New Law Galatians 3:19-25

Purpose of the Old Testament Why was the Old Testament written?

Why was the Old Testament written? For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4

Purpose of the Old Testament Why was the Old Testament written? Why was the Old Law written?

Why was the Old Law written? What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

Why was the Old Law written? But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. Galatians 3:19-25

Purpose of the Old Testament Why was the Old Testament written? Why was the Old Law written? How long did the Old Law last?

For Our Learning Origin of man and the world. Only way to understand the New Testament. Learn how God deals with man. Learn what God expects and demands. Scheme of Redemption.

The Law could not justify Need for the New Testament

The Law could not justify knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. Galatians 2:16

The Law could not justify Need for the New Testament The Law could not make righteous

The Law could not make righteous I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain. Galatians 2:21

Need for the New Testament The Law could not justify The Law could not make righteous New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant

New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says:" Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah

New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ' Know the Lord, ' for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. - Hebrews 8:6-13

Need for the New Testament The Law could not justify The Law could not make righteous New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Hebrews 9:15-17

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? What the Bible says about the Old Law

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:14

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:4

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet. Romans 7:1-7

When did the New Testament fulfill the Old? " Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Matthew 5:17-18

The New Law The New Law goes beyond the Old Law in many ways. The New Law is the Law of Christ. Christ raised the bar.

Christ Raised the Bar 1. Matthew 5:21-22 You have heard it was said But I say to you 2. Matthew 5:27-28 You have heard it was said But I say to you 3. Matthew 5:31-32 You have heard it was said But I say to you

Christ Raised the Bar 4. Matthew 5:33-34 You have heard it was said But I say to you 5. Matthew 5:38-39 You have heard it was said But I say to you 6. Matthew 5:43-44 You have heard it was said But I say to you

Which law are you following? In order to obedient we have to be following the Law of Christ. We cannot follow the old ways (the old law) and expect to be pleasing to God.

Which law are you following? Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. - Galatians 5:2-5
