Beyond Twelve Gates by Rabbi Ze ev Smason Parshas Tzav ~ March 26, 2016 "Of Course I'm Stubborn -- I'm Right!" Walt Bettinger is paid good money to do his job. Formally known as Walter W. Bettinger, II, the CEO of Charles Schwab earns about $12 million annually. Looking for a job at Charles Schwab? Walt wants to know the type of person you are before he offers you a job. But his way of figuring that out is slightly unconventional. In a recent interview, Mr. Bettinger said that when hiring, he s most concerned with character and the kind of person the job candidate is. I ll ask questions like, Tell me about the greatest successes in your life, he says. What I m looking for is whether their view of the world really revolves around others or whether it revolves around them. And I ll ask them about their greatest failures in their life and see whether they own them or whether they were somebody else s fault. But another thing the Schwab CEO sometimes does is a bit more distinctive. Mr. Bettinger says he invites the job candidate to breakfast -- but arrives at the restaurant early, pulls the manager aside, and says, I want you to mess up the order of the person who s going to be joining me. It ll be OK, and I ll give a good tip, but mess up their order. I do that because I want to see how the person responds, he says. That will help me understand how they deal with adversity. Are they upset, are they frustrated, or are they understanding? Life is like that, and business is like that. It s just another way to get a look inside their heart rather than their head. Mr. Bettinger said, We re all going to make mistakes. The question is how are we going to recover when we make them, and are we going to be respectful to others when they make them? The Talmud states that the depth of a person's character can be seen through his "kos, kis and kas": This is a phrase referring to key qualities. Kis: How does he use his money? Kos: What is he like when he drinks (alcohol)? Kas: How does he respond to stress and pressure, and what does he get angry at? How we act -- particularly how we deal with adversity -- offers a look into our heart. Parshas Tzav -- Leviticus 6:1 -- 8:36 The portion begins with G-d continuing to teach Moses many of the laws relating to the Mishkan service. However, while last week's portion described the korbanos (offerings) from the perspective of the giver, this week the Torah focuses more directly on the Kohanim, providing details about their service. After first describing the maintenance of the fire which burned on the altar, the Torah discusses the various kinds of korbanos which Aaron, his sons, and the succeeding generations of Kohanim would be offering. The offerings must be brought with the proper intention and eaten in a state of spiritual purity. Finally, Moses performs the lengthy consecration service of the Mishkan, and anoints Aaron and his sons for their service in the Mishkan, in front of the entire congregation of Israel. Rabbinic Ruminations Stubbornness has a bad rap. Think of a stubborn person, and you may think of someone who has too much ego, is unwilling to be wrong, hot-tempered, self-centered, fearful of the unknown, controlling, overly competitive and defensive. Is there another side to the story? Stubbornness can also be an asset. A new study finds that people labelled 'stubborn, defiant rule-breakers' as children grow up to earn a higher income. The study, from research carried out on almost 3,000 children in Luxembourg, looked at the children s intelligence, socioeconomic status and family background, among other variables. Forty years later, 745 of those children were followed up to find out their educational and

occupational achievements. The researchers were surprised to find that a more rebellious childhood nature was associated with a higher adult income. The only things that were greater predictors of an adult s income were higher IQ and higher socioeconomic status. Why might being stubborn lead to a higher income? This could be because rebellious people are better able to stand up for themselves. The study s authors write, [W]e might assume that students who scored high on this scale might earn a higher income because they are more willing to be more demanding during critical junctures such as when negotiating salaries or raises." Another explanation might be that individuals with higher levels of rule-breaking and defiance of parental authority also have higher levels of willingness to stand up for their own interests and aims, a characteristic that leads to more favorable individual outcomes. The study was published in the journal Developmental Psychology (Spengler et al., 2015). In the tragic incident of the Golden Calf, G-d told Moses He would destroy the Jewish people because they are a stiff necked people (Exodus 32). But later in the narrative, Moses used the trait of being stiff-necked to advocate for the Jewish people. Being stiff-necked means being stubborn. Stubborn people are the least likely to change or admit a mistake. But Moses understood the flip side to stubbornness: Once a stubborn person's loyalty is gained, he is loyal forever. Moses understood that someone who is tough to convince can be a real pain, but once convinced, will solidly stand by you. "You have to stand by us," Moses tells G-d, "because no other nation will stand by You in the way that we will." Be stubborn when it matters: Stand up for yourself, and stand up for being Jewish. Quote of the Week Swearing doesn t make your argument valid; it just tells the other person you have lost your class and control. -- Shannon L. Alder (author) Joke of the Week A man opened a new store, so his friends sent him a beautiful vase of flowers to congratulate him. But when he opened the card that came with the flowers, he was very surprised to see that the card expressed "Deepest Sympathy." While he was trying to understand the message, his telephone rang. It was the florist calling him to apologize for sending the wrong card. "Oh, it's all right." said the storekeeper. "I'm a businessman and I understand how mistakes can happen." "But," added the florist, "I accidentally sent your card to a funeral!" "Well, what did the card say?" ask the storekeeper. It said, "Congratulations on your new location!"
