Christ the Servant Catholic Church 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 23, 2014 Our Mission Christ the Servant Parish is a welcoming Catholic faith community gathered together to gratefully share and live the Eucharist, the inspiration of the Gospel, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and to follow Christ's example in service of others. Special points of interest: Catholic Relief Services, from our Bishop, page 2 Lent begins March 5 Lenten Mission with John Donahue- Grossman, March 16/17/18 Ministry Schedule, page 5 Save a Life Respecting Life means much more than saving unborn babies, as important as that is. Respecting Life means caring for people who are in need, through our donations to charity, through our participation in PADS ministry to the homeless (coming up at the end of March), and through giving the gift of life through blood donation. Sign up today to give the gift of life at our March 15 blood drive. Manual signup sheets are in the narthex; see page 3 for online registration information. Our Parish ~ Our Spiritual Home

Page 2 February 23, 2014 FROM BISHOP CONLON CRS: Restore the Church. Build the Future Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Soon, the Diocese of Joliet will take up the collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This Collection funds grants that provide pastoral care, affordable shelter, and a cultural and spiritual education for suffering people who live in areas formerly under Soviet control. This special collection is a way for Catholics in the United States to stand in solidarity with those who experience the continuing aftermath effects of decades of strife in that part of the world. The bishops and people of these regions face the enormous task of restoring church structures while rebuilding the life of the community. For example, in Bucharest, Romania, the Collection is funding a repair of the New Home Centre. The Centre provides a home for abandoned children, offering them nursery care and preschool education. However, the sisters building was poorly insulated and overcrowded. The repair and expansion project will provide living quarters for children and a separate kindergarten, ensuring that the children live in a safe and welcoming environment. Approximately 40,000 Ukrainians die each year from alcoholism, a remnant of the hopelessness fostered by generations of communist oppression. In response to this tragic predicament, Fr. Andriy Lohin founded four centers to care for those struggling with alcohol addiction and their families. This dynamic priest designed the centers to provide for the physical and spiritual welfare of those suffering the consequences of alcoholism. The centers focus on direct counseling and spiritual therapy, as well as educational outreach to rural villages. Thus far, the program has reached 15,000 people; therapists have conducted more than 350 consultations and visited over 150 villages. In order for projects like these to continue, your help is needed. Our diocese will take up this collection on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Please be generous in the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, where your gifts are restoring the Church and building the future. Thank you and God bless you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet P.S. At Christ the Servant, we have a tradition of allocating the Ash Wednesday collection to offset the costs of the Parish Mission. This year, we will allocate half to support the Church in Central and Eastern Europe collection, while retaining the other half for our traditional purpose of offsetting the Parish Mission costs. Your generosity will support both these worthy endeavors.

The document contains a series of questions for bishops to use when they consult with priests and the laity of their dioceses. (As we await the bishops meetings), I offer four practical suggestions for Catholics to become stronger witnesses to the Gospel relative to the family: (1) Let us make the Word of God in Scripture a daily reference in our lives, e.g. praying and reflecting on the daily Mass readings. (2) Let us make the Catechism of the Catholic Church a trusted resource. e.g. the marriage/family sections; (3) Let us pray for strong marriages and families, for healing those that are struggling, and for Pope Francis and the bishops; (4) Let us resolve to be champions for marriage and the family, leading with mercy and unafraid to witness to the beauty of the Church s teaching. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance as you seek to live out the faith in your family. ~by Andrew Lichtenwalner, USCCB director of the Office of Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth (Fathers for Good Knights of Columbus Columbia Magazine, Feb. 2014) submitted by Dave A The March Respect for Life meeting will be held Tuesday, Mar. 4, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. We will meet offsite at Andie W S home at 9:15 am. All are welcome as we plan "40 Days for Life" activities, participation in the Lenten Stations of the Cross, and the "Rise and Shine" Project Love breakfast which will be held, Sun., Apr. 5. Questions/comments call Lee W, David A, or Andie W.
