Sunday, October 30, 2016 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Dedication Sunday 10:45 a.m. Story of Zacchaeus, 1275, in Keldby Kirche, Denmark PREPARING OUR HEARTS FOR WORSHIP A quiet time before the service starts, to listen and look for God together. Look around you, what do you see? Close your eyes. Can you let your mind and your heart lie down? How still can you sit? Can you hear God s still, small voice? Zacchaeus Zacchaeus, small and sinful (according to the Scriptures), didn t want the parade to pass him by. Zacchaeus, little and lost (according to the Scriptures), climbed a sycamore tree to see this Jesus. Zacchaeus, rich and ready to give (according to the Scriptures), gave exuberantly, cheerfully, abundantly. Zacchaeus, sought and saved (according to the Scriptures), understood that stewardship is the thank-you of the heart. According to the Scriptures, so do we! Ann Weems

PRELUDE If You But Trust in God to Guide You arr. Kevin Hildebrand (contemporary) INTROIT Come One, Come All, Come Follow Philip R. Dietterich (b. 1931) Children s Choirs WELCOME SILENCE AND RINGING OF THE BELL We Gather to Praise God In music, words and silence, we invite God to shape and re-shape us into children of God. We admit our mistakes, are forgiven by God, and share God s peace with those around us. * CALL TO WORSHIP 1 John 3:1 See what love the Father has lavished on us! ALL: For we have been called children of God! All adults are called children of God. ADULTS: For that is what we are! All teens and tweens have been called children of God. TEENS AND TWEENS: For that is what we are! All children have been called children of God. CHILDREN: For that is what we are! We are all beloved children of God. ALL: Let us worship God who shows us such love! * HYMN 366 Jesus Thy Boundless Love to Thee PRAYER TO DRAW NEAR TO GOD S LOVE AND GRACE ALL: Welcoming God, we confess that we have not lived as you call us to live. We sometimes take what we want, when you teach us to trust in you. We sometimes forget that others are your beloved children, when you have taught us that you love everyone. Help us to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly each day. * Please stand in body or spirit

ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVE Isaiah 43:18-19 The prophet Isaiah said, Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: In Jesus Christ you are forgiven. ALL: Thanks be to God. * SING GLORY TO GOD * PASSING THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. ALL: And also with you. In music and prayer, in our Bible readings for the day and a sermon from our pastor, we listen and think about what God might be saying to us. SUNG PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (sung twice) SCRIPTURE READING Luke 19:1-10 NARRATOR: Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and called to him. JESUS: Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today! NARRATOR: So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble. GRUMBLING CROWD (CONGREGATION): He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner. NARRATOR: Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord: ZACCHAEUS: Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have [cheated] anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. NARRATOR: Then Jesus said to him: JESUS: Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. The word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. SERMON SEEING WITH NEW EYES Diane Walton Hendricks

We Respond to God s Word Everything we do in this part of the service helps us turn our faith inside-out so we can be God s servants in our church, our community, and our world. How can YOU do that? PRESENTING OUR GIVING CARDS AND PLEDGES TO GOD During the hymn of dedication, you are invited to bring your estimate of giving card and your seen and seeing leaf forward and place it in the basket. If you prefer to remain seated, you may also place these in the offering plate. * DEDICATION HYMN We Lift Our Voices

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord, in your mercy, ALL: Hear our prayer. OFFERING Let All the World in Every Corner Sing arr. Joseph M Martin (b. 1959) * DOXOLOGY * PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD S PRAYER Holy One, we ask you to bless these offerings. ALL: May these gifts and our lives embody your vision of the kingdom. Bless the vulnerable, the oppressed, and all who seek justice. ALL: May we work with them in love until your kingdom comes. And until that day we will pray: ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. * HYMN 430 Come Sing, O Church, in Joy * OUR LIFE TOGETHER AS THE BODY OF CHRIST * CHARGE AND BLESSING * CHORAL BENEDICTION POSTLUDE All Things Bright and Beautiful arr.
