Sunday, October 30, 2016 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Dedication Sunday 10:45 a.m. Story of Zacchaeus, 1275, in Keldby Kirche, Denmark PREPARING OUR HEARTS FOR WORSHIP A quiet time before the service starts, to listen and look for God together. Look around you, what do you see? Close your eyes. Can you let your mind and your heart lie down? How still can you sit? Can you hear God s still, small voice? Zacchaeus Zacchaeus, small and sinful (according to the Scriptures), didn t want the parade to pass him by. Zacchaeus, little and lost (according to the Scriptures), climbed a sycamore tree to see this Jesus. Zacchaeus, rich and ready to give (according to the Scriptures), gave exuberantly, cheerfully, abundantly. Zacchaeus, sought and saved (according to the Scriptures), understood that stewardship is the thank-you of the heart. According to the Scriptures, so do we! Ann Weems

ASSURANCE OF GOD S LOVE Isaiah 43:18-19 The prophet Isaiah said, Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. ALL: Thanks be to God. * SING GLORY TO GOD * PASSING THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. ALL: And also with you. SUNG PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (sung twice) SCRIPTURE READING Luke 19:1-10 NARRATOR: Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and called to him. JESUS: Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today! NARRATOR: So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble. GRUMBLING CROWD (CONGREGATION): He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner. NARRATOR: Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord: ZACCHAEUS: Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have [cheated] anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. NARRATOR: Then Jesus said to him: JESUS: Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. The word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. SERMON SEEING WITH NEW EYES Diane Walton Hendricks
