Teens Ages 14-18 Level 4 Lesson 1 The Importance of the Word Materials: Bibles, concordances, chairs, tables, and maybe a computer Bible program via smartphone/tablet. Objective: To show the importance of reading, understanding, and applying God s Word to one s life. Prove that the Bible can answer all questions and provide salvation. Key Verses: John 1:1 & John 14:5-6 Ø Introduction: Read key verses John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. As Christians, we must strive to be Christ-like. From these passages of Scripture two truths are evident; 1. Jesus is the Word. 2. Jesus is the Way (answer). Therefore, to know Him and be like Him, we must know His Word. By doing this we also reveal unto our own spirits, the answer to all of life s complications. Your Bible is what God thinks. It is God s mind. It is the history of how God has dealt with man since the creation. Wow! We have an inside line into what the God of heaven and earth thinks, and He has given it to us as a gift! What we do with that gift is crucial and will affect us both physically and spiritually. Page 1 of 9

Ø Lesson: (Teacher tips: It is important to have students read all the scriptures out of their Bibles. Take their time looking them up, and reading carefully. Remember, this is what God thinks. If you, the teacher, take it lightly, students won t get the emphasis needed.) Hebrews 4:12-13 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. A really exciting thing is that the Word knows us!! We can t hide anything from Him. When we read or hear the Word, it digs down deep to try to get the stuff out of us that needs to go! There is no one that can know us like He does. He knows what we are thinking, and why we are thinking it. So, if we are interested in getting ready for the rapture, and pleasing Him, then we need to find out what He thinks about what you are doing, or not doing! Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. 1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: There is an old saying, You are what you eat! These Scriptures tell us to eat the Word for nourishment, and growth. How do we eat the Word? We eat the Word by reading our Bibles, studying our Bibles, and listening to preaching. This should be as much of a ritual and habit as feeding our physical bodies. Reading the Bible helps us to understand God s will for our life and provides us with understanding that surpasses the world s view on life. Indulging in His Word takes practice. The more you read the Bible, the more you will fall in love with it. By doing this, you will not only realize how much Jesus loves us, but you will convey to the Master the love you have for Him. Page 2 of 9

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. The Word must be in our thoughts day and night. Meditate means to focus one s thoughts on; reflect on or ponder over. The key to your success in this life and your life beyond, hinges on the Word, and your response to that Word. Daily meditation and frequent practicing of speaking It s writings will bring multitudes of blessings and success. Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. The Word not only gives us the direction to go, (unto my path) but it also lights up the little details of life that we seem to trip over (unto my feet). How exciting!!! Praise God!!! He shows me where to go and how to get there!! You don t have to wander around in confusion. Psalm119:98-100 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. Teenagers love to be right about everything! The Word is a perfect tool for teenagers to outwit an enemy, outsmart teachers, and know more than the old folks! The more Word you have in your mind, the more you think about it, the more you will be ahead. All of the answers you need in life are in the Word!!!!! Wouldn t it be fun to learn how to find the answers to life s questions with a little skit. Ø Class Activity: (Teacher tips: In this portion of the lesson we will be demonstrating how all of life s questions can be found in the Bible. To do this, select volunteers from your class to fill the positions for the skit listed below. Try to use everyone in the class. Try to utilize your role-play wisely, by incorporating the older/more experienced students as the finders. This will expedite the lesson and allow for smooth transitions from one question to the next. If there are students in the class that are first-time visitors, or unchurched, encourage them to participate as the finders in this skit or have them search the Scriptures with another finder. (Do not allow them to feel singled out or helpless.) Page 3 of 9

Choose: 1. Someone to be God - a younger student would be good. 2. Some church kids - younger students 3. Some unchurched kids - younger students 4. The remaining students will be those who find the answers in the Book. Position the student portraying God sitting on a throne. The church and unchurched kids will ask Him questions. His reply will always be, The answer is in the Book! Instruct the finders to search the Scriptures for the answers to each question. Have the older/more experienced students try to find as many answers as possible on their own. If all else fails, you can give them hints, and then the answers. This is a good exercise for them to learn how to use a concordance/computer Bible program. Make the interaction fun and enthusiastic. We need a good list of questions for the students to use, and good Biblical answers. Sample Question: 1. Church kid (to God) - Who should I talk to when I have problems? God - The answer is in the Book! Finders - (These answers are by no means all of the answers that you could find for a particular topic. These are just examples to help you get started.) Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. Proverbs 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety. Ecclesiastes 12:9-11 9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. 10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. Page 4 of 9

Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. Sample Question: 2. Non-church kid (to God)- How can I know I am saved? Finders: God - The answer is in the Book John 3:1-8 1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Acts 2:37-40 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. John 8:31-32 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Page 5 of 9

Sample Question 3. Church kid (to God) - Who should I marry? Finders: God - The answer is in the Book! Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Proverbs 31:10-11 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. Sample Question: 4. Church kids (to God) - What should I do with my life? Finders: God - The answer is in the book! Luke 12:22-34 22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. Page 6 of 9

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. (emphasis mine) 32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 1 Corinthians 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. Joshua 1:6-7 6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Sample Question: 5. Non-church kid - How do I know which church to attend? Finders: God - The answer is in the Book! John 8:31-32 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Page 7 of 9

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 2 Timothy 4:2-4 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Matthew 15:13-14 13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. This could go on all day and never run out of questions and answers! One of the greatest things about the Word being God (John 1:1 & 14) is that He answers our questions that we are not smart enough to ask. Search your Bible and it will change your life. The Word of God should be the foremost subject in your studies. Mankind will need this Book from birth until death. Indulge yourself in Its pages. Talk about Its power. Teach It to the hungry. Let It guide, protect, and feed you. Page 8 of 9

Ø Assignment Ask students if there are any questions that they may have concerning the Bible, life, standards, etc. After listening and wisely filtering these questions, assign three of their questions (or however many you choose) as homework for everyone. Offer a small prize to those who bring correct answers back to class next week. Questions could be concerning doctrine, cutting of hair, holiness, speaking of tongues, etc. If there are no questions suggested by the student, then prepare three of your own to assign. Encourage students to read the Bible systematically. If possible, provide reading plans or suggest websites that have pre-made Bible reading schedules. End class by praying with students for revelation of God s Word, and thanking Him for giving us His mind to delve into with all of our questions. Ask God to give us a desire to passionately read the Bible on a consistent, daily basis. Page 9 of 9
