The Pope speaks off-the-cuff and this often brings with it the need for an after the fact clarifier which most of us wish we had in everyday life. What we do receive because of his spontaneity is some real pearls of wisdom which have not been edited away. Pope Francis speaks from a deeply reflective mind. Question from the Gathering: "How can we prevent our communities from living a double standard: one that's strict and permissive?" Pope Francis Answer: "One cannot speak of 'stiffness' or 'security,' within morality. Morality cannot offer a mathematical security. This does not mean to forget morality, but it means to seek the truth. Morality is always an act of love: love of God and love of neighbor. It is an act that leaves room for the conversion of the other, it does not condemn them immediately, but leaves space. The Holy Father s insight into the need to make space for the conversion of the other would go a long way within our own hearts when dealing with troubling family challenges where individuals have not come to full maturity of life in God. Who of us is excluded from that? Question from the Gathering: "How can we educate young people to love sacramental marriage, overcoming their resistance, skepticism, disillusionment, fear of the end? Pope Francis Answer: "It s the culture of the provisional. This happens everywhere, also in priestly life, in religious life. Everything is provisional, and because of this the great majority of our sacramental marriages are null. Because they say, 'Yes, for the rest of my life!' but they don t know what they are saying, because they have a different culture. They say it, they have good will, but they aren't aware. "In the pre-marriage courses priests ask, 'How many live together?' Most raised their hands. They prefer to live together. This is a challenge that requires us to work, not to respond hastily: 'why don't you marry in the Church?' Stay near them, wait, and help fidelity mature among them." The use of the word null was a commentary on the lack of understanding of the depth of commitment needed for the life of the Sacrament of Marriage to blossom. Fidelity through suffering and pain, with God s grace, brings couples closer than a life of ease could provide. Enduring challenges and tears, both couples being committed, can bring about a bond that is stronger than before the tears began. It is the other half of the vows, fidelity through poorer, through sickness, through the worse, that is also a part of love. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
