TheChapelandChoirsofJesusCollege JesusCollege,foundedin1496byJohnAlcock,BishopofEly,asTheCollegeof the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and the Glorious Virgin Saint Radegund, has a long and rich tradition of church music. The Chapel servedasthechurchofthenunnerywhichprecededthecollege,andpartsof the building date back to the twelfth century. The Book of Common Prayer, devisedbythomascranmer,astudentandlaterfellowofthecollegeinthe sixteenthcentury,continuestobeusedinthechapel. The College is distinctive in maintaining two choirs, each of which typically singstwoservicesperweekintermtime: The Chapel Choir was re founded in 1849, when provision was made for six singing boys to adorn the worship of the newly restored chapel. Since then, treblesfromallovercambridgehavevolunteeredtosingforcollegeservices. The College does not maintain a choir school, but instead recruits boy choristersfromawiderangeoflocalschools. The College Choir, formed in 1982 following the admission of women students, has female undergraduates singing the soprano line (and alto line, alongsidemalecountertenors).theadultmalesingersformthe backrow for bothchoirs.eachchoirhasdevelopedadistinctivereputationandrepertoire, whilst combining for key events and large scale projects. In addition to the weekly schedule of choral services, members of the choirs enjoy concerts, recordings,broadcastsandforeigntours. TheChapelhasthreeorgans:theSuttonOrgan,locatedclosesttotheAltar, dates from the mid 19th century and was given to the College by Sir John Sutton. The designs on the panels are by Pugin. This instrument is currently beingrestoredbywilliamdrakeandwillbereturnedtoitsoriginal1849state. In 2007, the 33 stop Hudleston Organ was installed by Orgelbau Kuhn of Switzerland,andin2010,theCollegecommissionedtheRawlinsonOrgan,a three stopchamberorganbykennethtickellofnorthampton. TheCollegePrayer OeverlastingGod,whothroughmanygenerationshastblessedthecollege whichbearsthenameofjesus,grantthatwe,itslatestsonsanddaughters,may befortifiedandcladinhisraiment,andmaybygracekeepjesusinourhearts, throughhimwholivedanddiedforus,thesamejesuschristourlord. 3
