THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Joy in Repentance April 14 & 15, 2018 AS WE GATHER We may have a tendency to think of repentance as a painful thing, as something to dread and avoid at all costs. After all, repentance means admitting we were wrong. It may be embarrassment, guilt, shame, or pride that makes repentance difficult. Yet you have probably experienced the joy of repentance as well, the relief of confessing your sins, the wonder of grace that flows to us in forgiveness. You may be holding on to a dark secret or a stubborn grudge. Bring your heavy burdens to the Lord today. He has forgiven you and has called you His beloved child. WELCOME "In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15, ESV) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #825 Rise, Shine, You People Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered Our human story; God in Him is centered. He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded, With grace unbounded. See how He sends the pow rs of evil reeling; He brings us freedom, light and life and healing. All men and women, who by guilt are driven, Now are forgiven. Come, celebrate, your banners high unfurling, Your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling. To all the world go out and tell the story Of Jesus glory. Tell how the Father sent His Son to save us. Tell of the Son, who life and freedom gave us. Tell how the Spirit calls from ev ry nation His new creation 1 INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! He is the author of life People: whom God raised from the dead. He puts joy into our hearts People: and lifts the light of His face upon us. He has lavished us with love People: and called us His own children. Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION We know that Jesus came in order to take away sins, yet we often act in ignorance and doubt. We often grow angry with God s plans and activities in our world when we have no right to do so. As we draw near to the glory of the risen Christ, let us first consider our sins and our unworthiness to approach His presence. Heavenly Father, People: we have often walked in doubt and fear. We have failed to live in righteousness, innocence, and blessedness. We hear your call to repent. For the sake of the risen Christ, forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we follow in His footsteps both now and when He returns in glory. Amen. If Christ had not been raised from the dead, we would still be dead in our trespasses and sins, but Christ rose from the grave, and death no longer has dominion over Him! God has called you His children and that is what you are. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We wait for Christ s return and the restoring of all things. Amen. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE #680 Thine the Amen, Thine the Praise Stanzas 1 & 5 Thine the amen Thine the praise Alleluias angels raise Thine the everlasting head Thine the breaking of the bread Thine the glory Thine the story Thine the harvest then the cup Thine the vineyard then the cup is lifted up lifted up Thine the glory in the night No more dying only light Thine the river Thine the tree Then the Lamb eternally Then the holy holy holy Celebration jubilee Thine the splendor Thine the brightness only Thee only Thee. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. O God, through the resurrection of your Son, you began the restoration of all things. Enliven your people with the joy of repentance that is ours as your beloved children; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD FIRST READING Acts 3:11 21 (After healing a lame beggar, Peter proclaims repentance and forgiveness to the crowd.) While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's. And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name by faith in his name has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 3 EPISTLE 1 John 3:1 7 (God has loved us and called us His children.) See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. CHOIR ANTHEM (5:00) An Easter Carol HOLY GOSPEL Luke 24:36 49 (Jesus appears to His disciples and sends them out with a message to proclaim repentance and forgiveness to all nations.) As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, Peace to you! But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. CHILDREN S MESSAGE 4

SERMON HYMN #484 Make Songs of Joy Rise last stanza Make songs of joy to Christ, our head; Alleluia! He lives again who once was dead! Allelulia! Our life was purchased by His loss; Alleluia! He died our death upon the cross. Alleluia! O death, where is your deadly sting? Alleluia! Assumed by our triumphant King! Alleluia! And where your victory, O grave, Alleluia! When one like Christ has come to save? Alleluia! Behold, the tyrants, one and all, Alleluia! Before our mighty Savior fall! Alleluia! For this be praised the Son who rose, Alleluia! The Father, and the Holy Ghost! Alleluia SERMON Do You Believe in Ghosts? Luke 24:36-49 NICENE CREED (found on the inside back cover of the hymnal ) OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Heavenly Father, with joy the Church continues to celebrate the resurrection victory of your beloved Son. Look in your mercy on all who have been baptized into His death and resurrection, and grant them grace each day to die to sin and rise to newness of life with Him. Lord, in your mercy, 5 Fountain of mercy, you call your people to love and serve those in need. Pour out your blessing on all the mercy ministries of Christ s Church. Bless our Elizabeth ministry, that women may be supported in their calling. Bless our Divine Connections and Unified Connections teams, that we may grow together and many may come to know and praise your unspeakable kindness and love. Lord, in your mercy, Lord of the church, bless the students of our seminaries who are preparing for their vicarage assignments and first calls into the pastoral ministry. If it be your will, bless one of these men to come and work among us for the furtherance of Christ s kingdom in this place. Lord, in your mercy, King of kings and Lord of lords, to you we commend our public servants in this land. Bless and prosper them in their callings. Hinder everything that is contrary to your will, and establish and strengthen every good endeavor. Lord, in your mercy, Lord of kindness and compassion, your Son throughout His ministry healed the sick and relieved the distressed. Remember in tenderness those who are in need of His healing and comfort today especially Steve, Carlene, RoseMarie, Bob, Tony, Nancy, Sue, Janet, Donna, Dolores, Pat, Cliff, Manley, Pat, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Matthew, Russ, Dorothy, John, Arlene, Jack, Arlene, Shirley, Jonathan, Helen, Leonard and Sarah. By the power of your Holy Spirit, grant them grace to entrust themselves entirely to Your loving care. Lord, in your mercy, Gracious Master, your beloved Son summons us to His table to partake of His body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and for a share in His own divine life. Grant to us repentance and faith, that we may receive this holy supper in a worthy manner and to our abundant blessing. Lord, in your mercy, 6

Giver of the life that never ends, receive today our heartfelt thanks for all your servants who have departed this life in saving faith and who live in you forevermore. In your boundless love, bring us with them to share in the joys of the new heavens and the new earth. Lord, in your mercy, Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. All: Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF OUR LORD SACRAMENT THE PEACE OF THE LORD The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI #547 The Lamb Stanzas 1,3,5 The Lamb, the Lamb, O Father, where s the sacrifice? Faith sees, believes God will provide the Lamb of price! Refrain: Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me His own! The Lamb is reigning on His throne! The Lamb, the Lamb, As wayward sheep their shepherd kill So still, His will On our behalf the Law to fill. Refrain He rose, He rose, My heart with thanks now overflows. His song prolong Till ev ry heart to Him belong. Refrain DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. 7 continued HYMN #627 Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior, Turned away God s wrath forever; By His bitter grief and woe He saved us from the evil foe. As His pledge of love undying, He, this precious food supplying, Gives His body with the bread, And with the wine the blood He shed. Jesus here Himself is sharing; Heed then how you are preparing, For if you do not believe, His judgment then you shall receive. Praise the Father, who from heaven To His own this food has given, Who, to mend what we have done, Gave into death His only Son. Firmly hold with faith unshaken That this food is to be taken By the sick who are distressed, By hearts that long for peace and rest. Agony and bitter labor Were the cost of God s high favor; Do not come if you suppose You need not Him who died and rose. Christ says: Come, all you that labor, And receive My grace and favor: Those who feel no pain or ill Need no physician s help or skill. For what purpose was My dying If not for your justifying? And what use this precious food If you yourself were pure and good? If your heart this truth professes And your mouth your sin confesses, You will be your Savior s guest, Be at His banquet truly blest. Let this food your faith so nourish That its fruit of love may flourish And your neighbor learn from you How much God s wondrous love can do. HYMN #594 God s Own Child, I Gladly Say It God s own child, I gladly say it: I am baptized into Christ! He, because I could not pay it, Gave my full redemption price. Do I need earth s treasures many? I have one worth more than any That brought me salvation free Lasting to eternity! Sin, disturb my soul no longer: I am baptized into Christ! I have comfort even stronger: Jesus cleansing sacrifice. Should a guilty conscience seize me Since my Baptism did release me In a dear forgiving flood, Sprinkling me with Jesus blood? Satan, hear this proclamation: I am baptized into Christ! Drop your ugly accusation, I am not so soon enticed. Now that to the font I ve traveled, All your might has come unraveled, and, against your tyranny, God, my Lord, unites with me! 8 continued

Death, you cannot end my gladness; I am baptized into Christ! When I die, I leave all sadness To inherit paradise! Though I lie in dust and ashes Faith s assurance brightly flashes: Baptism has the strength divine To make life immortal mine. There is nothing worth comparing To this lifelong comfort sure! Open eyed my grave is staring: Even there I ll sleep secure. Though my flesh awaits its raising, Still my soul continues praising: I am baptized into Christ; I m a child of paradise! HYMN #725 Children of the Heavenly Father Children of the heav nly Father Safely in His bosom gather; Nestling bird nor star in heaven Such a refuge e er was given. God His own doth tend and nourish; In His holy courts they flourish. From all evil things He spares them; In His mighty arms He bears them. Neither life nor death shall ever From the Lord His children sever; Unto them His grace He showeth, And their sorrows all He knoweth. Though He giveth or He taketh, God His children ne er forsaketh; His the loving purpose solely To preserve them pure and holy. COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Gracious God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith as we look with joy at the wonderful gifts you give us in repentance and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. 9 CLOSING HYMN #832 Jesus Shall Reign Jesus shall reign where er the sun Does its successive journeys run: His kingdom stretch from shore to shore Till moons shall wax and wane no more. To Him shall endless prayer be made, And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With ev ry morning sacrifice. People and realms of ev ry tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name. Blessings abound where er He reigns: The pris ners leap, unloose their chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all who suffer want are blest. Let ev ry creature rise and bring Honors peculiar to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen.
