Spring Cleaning In the Heart Matthew 5:8 - Blessed (happy) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. NKJV Matthew 5:8 - God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. NLT In Matthew 5:8 we find the essence of Christianity - Christianity is first and foremost a religion of the heart. Jesus said that we are to love God with all our hearts (Matthew 22:37), we are to forgive from the heart (Matthew 18:35), and we are to receive the Word with a noble and good heart (Luke 8:15). Romans 6:17 - But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. NKJV The importance of religion from the heart cannot be overemphasized. 1 Samuel 16:7 For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. NKJV Proverbs 21:2 People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart. NLT Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. NLT When Jesus spoke of being pure in heart, He was contrasting true religion with what was practiced as religion in Judaism. The Pharisees emphasized outward rituals while neglecting the heart. Matthew 15:7-8: You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. NLT Matthew 23:25-28: What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy full of greed and selfindulgence! You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too. What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people s bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness. NLT If we aren t careful, we can be guilty of the exact same sin. As important as outward expressions are, they don t amount to anything if they are not from the heart. I. What is the heart? What is the heart? In Matthew 5:8 the word for heart is from (kardia), the term from which we get cardiac, which means of or near the heart. The physical heart is the chief organ of physical life. However, the word eventually came to stand for man s entire mental and moral activity, both the rational and emotional elements. The heart is the center of our emotions. We love God with our hearts (Luke 10:27), and we are to love one another fervently with a pure heart (1 Peter 1:22). The word heart is also used to refer to the intellect. Jesus spoke of those who thought evil in their hearts (Matthew 9:4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts? ). NKJV 1

The word heart is also used in association with the will, the decision-making part of the mind. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. NKJV The heart refers to all that is within an individual our affections, thoughts, and motivations. It is the center of a person s being and personality. What does it mean to be pure? When Jesus said we must be pure in heart, He was not talking about physical or ceremonial cleanness, He was referring to being pure/clean in the center of our being inward purity/cleanness. The word pure or clean includes three overlapping concepts: Cleanness - The word pure or clean was used to describe a cleansing process, such as washing garments, or Jesus washing our sins away. A clean heart is a pure heart. Revelation 7:14 These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. NKJV Acts 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. NKJV 1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. Revelation 1:5 from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood NKJV 1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. NKJV Purity - The word pure or clean was used of grain that had been winnowed so that all the chaff had blown away. Pure hearts have been purged of impurity. Psalm 51:7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Singleness - Pure milk is all milk; no water has been added. Pure gold is all gold; any inferior metals have been removed. A pure heart is not filled with mixed motives has priorities straight. James 4:8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. NLT Mark 4:19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced. NLT Psalm 86:11 Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you. NLT When I studied this beatitude, it made me painfully aware of how far short I come of what I should be. I do not make top grades on the cleanness and purity heart tests. It is hard to keep impure thoughts out of the heart. My hardest battles are fought in the heart. 2

Most of us have to admit that our hearts are not as pure as they should be. Maybe we need what used to be called a good spring cleaning. At the end of winter, when spring finally arrived, the windows were opened wide. Rugs were taken outside to be beaten. Bedding was taken outside to air out. The house was cleaned from top to bottom. Our hearts may need that kind of thorough cleaning. How can we have pure hearts? The starting place is to develop the qualities found in the previous beatitudes. Matthew 5:3 - Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. NKJV & NIV In the 1 st Beatitude we learn that there has to be an emptying of our lives before there can be a filling we must become poor in spirit (humility) before we can become rich in God s blessings. Matthew 5:4 - Blessed (happy) are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. NKJV In the 2 nd Beatitude we mourn over our spiritual condition, which causes us to turn to God, repent and obey the gospel great comfort comes from knowing that all our sins are forgiven and that we will live forever! Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek (gentle), for they shall inherit the earth. NKJV In the 3 rd Beatitude we accept God s will without question through obedience with a meek, gentle, yielding spirit. That is when we receive the best of God s blessings in the here and now, and the promise of eternal life in the hereafter. Matthew 5:6 - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. NKJV The 4 th beatitude teaches that to be a true Christian in good standing with God, we must have a deep craving, an intense heart-hunger and thirst for God Himself. Psalm 42:1-2: As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? NKJV Psalm 63:1 - O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. NKJV Psalm 84:2 - My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. NKJV Psalm 143:6 I lift my hands to you in prayer. I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain. NLT If our strongest desire is to live right and have that vital relationship with God, we will be satisfied! Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. NKJV In the 5 th beatitude, we learn and begin to show the same mercy and compassion to others that God has shown to us. To be pure in heart (6 th Beatitude), there are actions we need to take, so God can do in our hearts what only God can do. What can you and I do to purify our hearts? First, it helps to acknowledge our need and to do our best to keep our hearts pure. 3

Jeremiah 17:9-10: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart; I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. NKJV Mark 7:21-23: For from within, out of a person s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you. NLT Psalm 101:4 A sinful heart will be far from me. I will have nothing to do with sin. NLV Psalm 26:2 - Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart. NLT Psalm 51:16-17: You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. NLT Next, we need to fill our minds with God s Word. Psalm 119:9 - How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. NLT We need to read the Word, study the Word, meditate on the Word, and then obey the Word (1 Peter 1:22 You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth ). NLT James 1:21-25: So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don t just listen to God s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. NLT In addition to filling our hearts with the Word, we also need to fill our minds with good thoughts in general. We need to take care regarding what we see and what we hear. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things. NKJV It has been said, You can t keep a bird from flying overhead, but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair. No one can keep impure thoughts from entering his mind, but he does not have to dwell on them. In the end, we must throw ourselves on the mercy of God and pray: Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. NKJV When we come to trust in Jesus and acknowledge our need for grace, God cleanses our hearts by faith (Acts 15:9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he cleansed their hearts through faith ). NLT II. For they shall see God According to the customs of ancient societies, to come into a king s presence and see his face was the highest of honors. According to the Bible, those qualified to come into God s presence are those living holy lives with pure hearts. Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord NKJV 4

Psalm 24:3-4: Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies. NLT In this life we see God with the eye of faith; but in the life to come, we shall see Him face to face. In this life the pure in heart are waiting in the outer room, excitedly awaiting an audience with the King! Are you pure in heart? Revelation 22:1-5: Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations. No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there no need for lamps or sun for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. NLT III. Conclusion The church in America today is nearly powerless because its pews are filled with lukewarm halfhearted Christians who have never truly repented. It is full of people who are living sinful lives, people with impure hearts, people who are ok with doing what they think is just enough, people who are just going through the motions of organized religion, people who are playing church! Churches every Sunday are literally filled with sinners who need to repent - the worldly, the greedy, the apathetic, the holier-than-thou s, the I m better than you s, the gossipers, the worriers, the profane, the sexually immoral, the addicted, the hateful, the bitter, the mad, the proud, the stingy, the mean, the unforgiving! Friends, it is time to acknowledge our sinfulness and confess our sins, it is time to be pure in heart! Psalm 66:18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. NLT It is time to get rid of our hang-ups and bad habits that are slowly destroying our lives. It is time to: Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). NLT It is time to stop turning to the things of the world such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, etc., when we are feeling stressed and need relief! It is time to repent of our anxieties and worries and fears! It is time for us to wake up and repent of our half-hearted approach to our Christian faith! Matthew 7:21-23: Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! Make no mistake about it on Judgment Day, there could/will be elders, deacons, Sunday school teachers, preachers, farmers, school teachers, etc., along with countless others that will be turned away because they didn t know the Lord! I tell you today there are people in this church dying and going to hell because they are not doing the will of the Father, they do not know the Lord! My great fear is that Jesus may be describing some of you - you are nice people, but you may not be truly committed to the Lord, which means you are in danger of losing your souls! It is time to wake up! It s time for us to rise up, get out of the rut and routine, and begin to take our Christian faith seriously! 5

It is time to turn to God: Joel 2:12-13: That is why the Lord says, Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead. Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish. 6
