MAY 7, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 Congratulations to the St. Columbanus School and Religious Education Students who received the sacrament of Confirmation last Wednesday. We thank Bishop Byrne for conferring the sacrament. In the sacrament of Confirmation the fullness of the Holy Spirit is given to those receiving the sacrament. In the day and age we live in it is important to recognize that we need the grace of the Holy Spirit in order to live a good Catholic life which alone can bring us true happiness and lead us to eternal life. It was the Holy Spirit at Pentecost that gave the timid Apostles the courage to proclaim the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ and His one true church, the Roman Catholic Church. However, the sacraments are not magic where we become instant saints without any effort on our part. We must cooperate with the graces God gives us. We must pray and stay close to Jesus through the sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. We must pray that we use the gifts received in Confirmation. St. Thomas Aquinas explains them: Wisdom is to know about " divine things" and live according to divine truth. Understanding is penetrating insight into the very heart of things, especially those higher truths that are necessary for our eternal salvation in effect, the ability to "see" God. Counsel allows a man to be directed by God in matters necessary for his salvation. Fortitude denotes the courage to do good and in avoid evil, particularly when it is difficult or dangerous to do so. Knowledge is the ability to judge correctly about matters of faith and right action, so as to never wander from the straight path of justice. Piety is revering God with filial affection, by offering worship and duty to God, while acting justly towards all, and honoring the saints and not contradicting Scripture. The Latin word pietas denotes the reverence that we give to our father and to our country; since God is the Father of all. Fear of God is, in this context, " filial" or chaste fear whereby we revere God and avoid separating ourselves from him as opposed to "servile" fear, whereby we fear punishment. I hope that the parents will foster the living of the faith at home by prayer and by attending Mass on Sunday and Holy Days. A secular survey showed that the two most important things families can do to remain stable and peaceful are to pray and worship together and to eat meals together as a family. We all know the greatest meal ever celebrated was the Last Supper, when Christ instituted the Mass. Certainly we should always seek to nourish our souls as we care for our physical needs by receiving Holy Communion worthily at Mass. As we speak of Mass and Holy Communion, let us remember to pray for our children who will receive their First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 13, which is also the 100 th anniversary of the appearance of our Lady to the 3 shepherd children of Fatima in Portugal. Before our Lady appeared, an angel gave Holy Communion to the children. May our children on their 1 st Holy Communion be ever close to Jesus and Mary. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
