OUR LADY OF SORROWS ST. ANTHONY ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY September, October and November, 2017 MISSION STATEMENT: Our Lady of Sorrow-St. Anthony Rosary Altar Society is a parish confraternity whose members seek to enhance the spiritual, social and cultural life of our parish through liturgical service, prayer and devotion to the gospel teaching, while honoring the desire of our Lord to better know, love and venerate His Mother. Members of the Rosary Confraternity pledge to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and to secure her patronage by recitation of the Rosary for the mutual spiritual benefits of all members throughout the world. OFFICERS 2016 2018 Natalie Baranowski, President 890-1577 Toni Levandowski, Vice President 588-4768 Marcia Adams, Secretary 586-3250 Joyce Berryman, Treasurer 587-8791 Dear Rosary Altar Members and People of the Parish, Welcome back from our summer break. I hope you all had time to relax and are ready for this year s activities. As we begin this year, we hit the ground running with some events coming up rather quickly. We start with the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, the Parish Picnic on September 17, the Rosary Altar Society Regional Network Mass here at Our Lady of Sorrows on Saturday, October 7. I hope all of you will attend as many of these events as possible. Our Society is always looking for new members to strengthen our group. Please extend an invitation to your family and friends to reinforce their relationship with our Blessed Virgin Mary. Our first meeting will be on September 11 beginning in Church with an opening Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Sincerely yours in Our Lady, Natalie Baranowski, President

GENERAL INFORMATION Our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Lord is expressed in a variety of ways, including private recitation of the rosary, monthly group recitation of the rosary, attendance together at mass on the first Sunday of each month, prayer services throughout the year, an annual Day of Recollection and an annual visit to a shrine. We imitate Mary s willingness to help and serve others by laundering/ironing the altar linens, cleaning/refilling the holy water fonts, making rosaries for the missions, hospitals, schools and our military, making prayer shawls and donating food and clothing to the needy. In addition, we conduct a Palm Cross Sale, a Christmas Wreath Sale and participate in the Annual May Crowning and in the celebration of St. Joseph s Day and make donations throughout the year to help those in need. These activities keep the Rosarians involved in our Parish and the Community. CORPORATE SUNDAY is held on the first Sunday of every month, the Rosary is recited after the 8:00 a.m. Mass at the OLS Campus from July to December. From January to June, Corporate Sunday is held at the St. Anthony Campus with recitation of the rosary at 9:00 a.m. followed by the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Adjustments will be made to the schedule as our Mass schedules are sometimes adjusted according to the Parish needs. All parishioners are invited to recite the Rosary for our parish community, world peace, an end to abortion and terrorism; for the intentions of the Pope and for the special intentions of all those in attendance. MONTHLY MEETINGS are held on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room at OLS. Because of Labor Day, the September meeting is held on the second Monday. Meetings are not held in January, July or August. ROSARY MAKERS GROUP Anyone interested in learning to make rosaries, please contact Betty Adamczyk at (609) 586-6771. Rosaries are sent to the missions, soldiers and given to the First Communicants of our parish. PRAYER SHAWLS The Prayer Shawl Group meets at 1:30 p.m. on the second Monday of the month in the Church Meeting Room at OLS. Prayer shawls are made for patients in area hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. If you or anyone you know is interested in making prayer shawls, please contact Joyce Farina at (609) 888-0437. If you have any completed prayer shawls or if you wish to donate yarn, call Joyce and she will make arrangements to meet with you. We also ask that you refrain from dropping off any completed prayer shawls or yarn at the parish office; be sure to call Joyce instead.

NEW MEMBERS New members are always welcome to attend any of our meetings and will be greeted warmly and friendly. Being a Rosarian honors Mary as the Mother in whose care Jesus has placed us, and our Lady s blessings will be without measure. Once you are inducted into the Confraternity, you are a lifetime member. If you are considering joining the Rosary Altar Society and have questions, please feel free to contact any Board Member. TRIVIA CORNER MARY ON EARTH AFTER JESUS On August 15 th we celebrated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It brought to mind the age old question of how long was our Blessed Mother on earth without Her beloved Son, Jesus Christ. We know that Jesus died at 33 years of age. It is reported all the Apostles were with Mary at the time of her death. James the won of Zebedee was executed by Herod in 44 AD (Acts 12:2) Mary was approximately 14 when She gave birth to Jesus. This age is derived from Jewish custom at that time. Girls were of age for marriage between the ages of 12 14. It is believed the Angel Gabriel visited Mary when she was about 13. Given Jesus died at 33 this would make Mary 47 at the time of Jesus crucifixion. There are some writings that said Mary lived three years near Mount Sion and three years in Bethany. We are now at the year 39 AD. There are two other legends that say Mary lived in Ephesus and Jerusalem, however, it appeared that John had a house built for her outside of Ephesus on the road to Jerusalem. She lived there in quiet with Christian family members and friends. It seems our Blessed Virgin lived there approximately four years. This brings the answer to our question: How long was Mary without Her Beloved Son; approximately 10 years. She was assumed into Heaven when She was approximately 57 years old. WHY THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY HAS BEEN VENERATED UNDER DIFFERENT TITLE. Many Catholics think that the Blessed Virgin Mother has multiple names given the fact that we venerate her under different titles. As the matter of fact, there is one Blessed Virgin Mary. Even if we give her so many titles such as Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima etc., she is the same and unique Blessed Virgin Mary despite of the titles attributed to her. We venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary under different titles and the reason for that is because wherever there is an apparition to the Blessed Virgin, she has been named after such a location in which the apparition occurred. In the course of history, there have been countless apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She appeared in many different locations in our history. This explains the reason why Mary has so many titles. However, despite of these many titles, given to Mary, there exists only one ever blessed Virgin Mary who is the Mother of Jesus Christ and ours. Within the context of Mary s apparition, this year the Church celebrates the one hundred anniversary of Our Lady s apparition at Fatima in Portugal. It was in 1917 during the World War I the Blessed Virgin appeared to three little children whose name are: Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. These little shepherd children had the privilege to experience the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary during a number of times. To these three children the Blessed Virgin spoke and asked for daily recitation of the Rosary, penance, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It has been one hundred years since Our Lady has given us this message. Have we followed up with the message that Our Lady has been entrusted to our care. The Blessed Virgin Mary demands us to consecrate ourselves and the world into her most Immaculate Heart. During this Jubilee year of Our Lady of Fatima, let us continue to dedicate our families, our homes, our Rosarians and our Church to the Blessed Virgin of Fatima. Thus, we formulate our prayers of consecration to you our Lady of Fatima: O Mary, Virgin and most powerful Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and Refuge of Sinners, we consecrate ourselves today to thine Immaculate Heart. We consecrate to thee our very being and our whole life, all that we have, all that we love, all that we are. To thee we give our bodies, our hearts and souls, to thee we give our homes, our families, and our country. Mindful of this consecration, we now promise to imitate thee by the practice of Christian virtues without regard for human respect. We resolve to receive Holy Communion on the first Saturday of every month when possible and to offer daily five decades of the Rosary with all our sacrifices in the spirit of penance and reparation. Amen! (Prayer given to the Shepherd Children of Fatima) By: Father Jean Felicien Moderator
