Lesson #2 THEOLOGY: HOLY SCRIPTURE [Rev. D. Kleyn, PRCA Missionary]

INTRODUCTION Why is the truth concerning Scripture (the doctrine of Scripture ) treated in Theology? 1. Because God reveals Himself to us through the Scriptures (see Q. 7 of Lesson #1). 2. Because the Bible is God s Book. God is the Author. It was written/produced by God. It contains God s words. 3. Because the Bible is the basis/foundation of all Truth in Theology, Anthropology, Christology, etc.

WHAT IS THE BIBLE? Q&A 1 The Bible is the divinely inspired and infallibly written Word of God. The Bible is the WRITTEN WORD OF GOD. It is: A DIVINE Book. An INSPIRED Book. An INFALLIBLE Book. II Timothy 3:16 and II Peter 1:20-21. Names for the Bible: The Bible = the book. Scriptures = writings. The Word = Christ reveals God; Christ is revealed. Word of God = The Word that is from God.

What is the ORIGIN of the Bible? 1. For the first 2,500 years of time, there was no Bible. God did reveal Himself and spoke His Word to His people. How? Directly. Through angels, dreams, prophets, etc. But nothing written. No inspired writings. No Bible yet. 2. God then directed men (about 40 in total) to write down His Word: Moses, David, Isaiah, Paul, John, etc. 3. After the book of Revelation was written by John, no more Words came from God. Bible was complete. God no longer speaks new things today. Revelation 22:18-19 gives a serious warning!

Who is the AUTHOR of the Bible? The inspiration of Scripture. [Q&A 3] 1. God used men. He used their circumstances, characters, experiences, abilities, personalities, etc. 2. But God, through the Spirit, inspired them. [Q&A 4] Inspire = to breathe out. The Spirit breathed out God s Word through the men God used. The Spirit gave the men the exact words to write. The Spirit made sure they wrote down these words. The Bible has only one Author God the Holy Spirit! The Bible is not the Word of God AND the words of men. Not true (as some say) that God s word is IN the Bible. But: The Bible IS God s Word!

WRONG VIEW OF BIBLE S AUTHORSHIP God Moses David Paul John BIBLE

CORRECT VIEW OF BIBLE S AUTHORSHIP GOD the SPIRIT Moses David Paul John BIBLE

PROOFS FOR INSPIRATION? 1. II Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2. II Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God 3. Jeremiah 36:2 Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee 4. Acts 1:16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 5. Rev. 1:10-11 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; The Bible itself says the Bible is God s Word. We believe it is the Word of God because it says so.

What are the Bible s ATTRIBUTES? (1) Infallibility [Q&A 6] Infallible = incapable of error. Thus it has no errors (inerrant). No mistakes in it. This is true of the Bible because of Who the Author is. And because the Bible is infallible, it is trustworthy. (2) Unity [Q&A 7] a) There are no contradictions only seeming contradictions. Everything is in perfect harmony. b) There is one theme one word/message of God. What? The gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ.

What are the Bible s ATTRIBUTES? (3) Perspicuity [Q&A 8] The Bible is clear and easy to understood for our salvation. Children can easily understand it, too. Denied by Roman Catholicism say it is obscure, say only the clergy are able to explain and interpret it. We (the Reformed) maintain that every believer is able (by the Spirit) to understand the Bible. The Reformation in the 15 th and 16 th Centuries restored the Office of All Believers. The Bible was made available to all by means of translation and printing.

What are the Bible s ATTRIBUTES? (4) Authority [Q&A 9] It is the only rule for faith for what you believe. It is the only rule for life for how you live. It has this authority because God is the Author. Tradition is not authoritative, as Roman Catholics claim. (5) Sufficiency [Q&A 10] It contains everything we need in order to know God and the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. We do not need to, and must not look elsewhere: e.g., books, men, etc. (Acts 4:12)

Lesson #2 EXTRA WORK

Extra Work #1 Look up II Peter 1:20-21 and II Timothy 3:16 and answer this question: Is Scripture the product of both God and man? Prove your answer from these texts. God the Spirit is the sole Author, for (II Tim. 3:16) all scripture is given by inspiration of God. II Peter 1:20-21 No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation i.e., no private opinions. The Scriptures are not the result or the product of the will of man. The men God used were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Extra Work #2 Read the Belgic Confession, Article 5 and answer this question: Why do we believe all things contained in the Scriptures? 1. The church has officially declared that these 66 books belong to the canon of Scripture and are the Word of God. 2. The Holy Spirit works faith in us to believe that the Bible and all that it contains is from God. 3. The Scriptures themselves give evidence that they are from God, because they are being fulfilled. [See Q&A 2]

Extra Work #3 What is the purpose of the Bible? See John 5:39, and II Timothy 3:16-17. 1. To reveal Christ and the way of salvation in Him. 2. To direct us in what we must believe. (The only rule for faith!) 3. To tell us how to live -- i.e., for our sanctification. (The only rule for life!)

Extra Work #4 If the Scriptures are easy to understand, how do you explain II Peter 3:16? Scriptures are clear and easy to understand as far as is necessary for our salvation. But the Scriptures are also deep and profound. We need to engage in the hard work of studying the Bible. We will never fully know everything there is to know in God s Word. The weakness is not in the Bible (that it is unclear), but in us (we are finite and sinful creatures).

Extra Work #5 Find other proof in Scripture that Scripture is without error. Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Extra Work #6 What is Organic Inspiration? 1. MEANING of ORGANIC INSPIRATION: The Bible was not written mechanically. The men were not like robots, typewriters, secretaries, etc. God used living men with different experiences, styles, gifts, personalities, etc. 2. EXPLANATION: God eternally viewed the Bible, in His counsel, as an organism: One principle of unity the Lord Jesus Christ. Many different parts: different Testaments, Books, Types of literature, Languages, and Human Writers. God by His providence prepared the men he would use, including their circumstances, abilities, personalities, etc. Thus we can see in the Bible the individual marks of the different men.

Extra Work #6 What is (2) Verbal Inspiration: Every word is inspired, and not simply ideas. This includes all small words: prepositions, conjunctions, etc. Every word is a word that the Holy Spirit wanted in the Bible. (3) Plenary Inspiration: Plenary means full/complete. The whole Bible was inspired inspired as a whole. Bible is complete complete revelation of God re salvation. (4) Graphic Inspiration: Graphic means to write. God not only inspired what the men who wrote said. God also inspired what those men wrote down.

Lesson #2 BIBLE TRANSLATIONS/VERSIONS

What Bible TRANSLATION/VERSION? What Bible TRANSLATION/VERSION should we use? Scripture originally written in 2 languages: Old Testament in Hebrew, New Testament in Greek. Thus it is necessary to make translations of the Bible. Many different translations/versions available: In English: KJV, RSV, NIV, NKJV, GNB, ESV, etc. In Tagalog: AB, ABAB, Magandang Balita, etc. So: Which version(s) should we use? Why?

What Bible TRANSLATION/VERSION? Characteristics of a Good Translation: Loyal to Original Manuscripts (a literal translation) Faithfulness in Form (history translated as history, etc.) Authoritative (the language gets people s attention) Clarity (even children can read and understand) Many translations are unfaithful: Wrong principle of translation e.g., dynamic equivalence. Influenced by the translator s (and/or producer s) beliefs (false/heretical doctrines). Best English translation is the King James Version (KJV) [also referred to as the Authorized Version (AV)].
