WELCOME TO PIONEER IT S SORT OF LIKE SCHOOL Do you remember how you felt on the first day at a new school? It was probably a somewhat scary experience, right? You re wondering if people will like you; if you ll make friends; who you will sit with during lunchtime. Fast forward several weeks later, and there you were laughing with friends, trading your lunch desserts, and planning where you would meet for the after-school soccer game. And here you are, some of you for the very first time. I don t discount how difficult it was for you to come. Maybe your wife or girlfriend invited you. Perhaps your uncle bribed you. Maybe your friend dragged you. Nonetheless, here is my dream for you: that soon you'll feel like part of the family. Through a handshake, a hug, or in a GROW group, may you feel embraced and welcome. THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG FLINT: I WAS THIRSTY AND YOU GAVE ME NOTHING TO DRINK BY DWIGHT K. NELSON P oor Flint, Michigan. But then, maybe that s their problem. They are poor. An African American majority. No money. No lobbyists. No political power. So nobody pays attention until recently, that is. Since April, 2014, when their city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River (to save money), residents of this city of 100,000 began complaining of burning skin, hand tremors, hair loss, even seizures. Children were being diagnosed with anemia. Parents were finding strange red splotches on their hands and faces (TIME 2-1-16 p 34). Their drinking water was changing colors from blue to green to beige, brown and yellow. And it smelled like gasoline, some said. Others described it as the inside of a fish market. Melissa Mays, a 37-year-old mother of four, says her hair started to fall out in clumps, clogging the shower drain. She broke out in rashes and developed a respiratory infection, coughing up phlegm that tasted like cleaning products (ibid.). All the while city officials declared the water safe to drink. The mayor even gulped down a drink of it in front of TV cameras. Why worry? But the continuing pleas of Flint s residents eventually found political traction in the presidential race. Candidates challenged would officials have ignored eighteen months of cries for help, if the pleas had come from the affluent suburbs of Detroit or Ann Arbor? You don t need a degree in political science to know the answer. Now the decrepit lead pipes of old Flint are injecting lead poison into the water supply and children of the inner city face sobering developmental risks. Even 4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

though the city switched back to Lake Huron water last October, the lead pipes are so corroded the water is unfit for drink. Enter now a band of Andrews University students from the seminary, from the Physical Therapy department who have launched a major relief effort underway on campus to collect donations of bottled water to deliver to Flint s imperiled citizens. Tina Carriger, a seminary student with her husband, wrote me: On Friday, January 22nd my husband and I made a trip to Flint in our SUV, completely loaded with water donated by Andrews University students and members of the Niles Philadelphia SDA Church in Niles, Michigan. We traveled to Flint with 40 cases of water and within a matter of 20 minutes that water was gone! They returned to Flint on Friday, January 29, and are planning to go back next Friday (February 5). They are appealing for people at Pioneer, Andrews and around this community to assist them in their humanitarian effort. The city is limiting residents to one case of water per person per day. They need more water! So I m inviting you to join us in this emergency water donation. Drop off your case(s) of water inside the entrance of the seminary building (parking lot side). The Carrigers and their team will deliver the water on Friday. Lest we minimize the gift of a cup of water to a thirsty soul, Jesus declares the endtime judgment will hinge on what we do or do not do for the forgotten, the marginalized, the poor: Inasmuch as you did it to the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did it to Me for I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink (Matthew 25:40, 35). But lest we conclude His mission includes only tap water, Jesus also declares: Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:13-14). Flint is dying for water, and so is the world. There is no more compelling reason for you and me to take the Water of Life to the thirsty all around us. Our surplus must be shared. You can follow Pastor Dwight s blog at www.pmchurch.tv/blog. FEATURE ARTICLE MY STORY: VEGANISM AND LEGALISM BY JACQUELINE DOHNA M y vegan journey is very much intertwined with my journey with God. My decision to adopt a plant-based diet and my daily decision to follow that lifestyle are a result of my spiritual walk. Although these aspects of my life are inseparable, I do not think my diet is something that gains me favor with God. I did, however, think this at one point. Let me explain my journey through veganism and legalism. Almost 3 years ago, shortly after becoming a Christian, I watched a documentary called Forks Over Knives. I became shockingly convicted of my own eating habits. I sat there in silence as I felt a strong conviction that how I was treating my body was not acceptable. Some changes would have to be made in order for me to comfortably move forward on my journey. I broke the silence by declaring I was vegan. Both meat and dairy were a thing of the past. I started looking for new ways to help convince my parents of healthier eating habits as well. Being a new Christian and a fresh vegan, I had a lot of learning to do. I quickly tumbled down the slippery slope of following rules and regulations. May contain milk or eggs; nope can t chance it. I remember once eating a snack that had cheese in it and feeling horrible afterward. There was such a sense of guilt that overcame me, even though I had eaten this cheesy snack out of ignorance. During this time my personal relationship with God was also very much based on following the rules, and making sure my behavior was controlled. Everything from the way I approached the idea of the Sabbath, to the food I prepared; all revolved around the fear of causing God to be angry with my actions. It wasn t until I decided to come to school here at Andrews University that I encountered a paradigm shift. Through different experiences, I began to see a clearer picture of what it meant to be Christian. No longer was the emphasis on my actions, but on Jesus decision to, through His actions, die for me. It was about a personal relationship with my Creator. I began to break free from this legalistic mentality, as a whole, and it began to show in various areas of my life. I no longer feared God would be angry with me eating one food item that had a slight amount of dairy in it. I felt freed from my mental prison. My diet is not a salvific concern anymore. I do think eating healthy is important for many reasons, such as a prolonged life and a clear mind. I don t think, however, that being a strict vegan makes me higher up on the invisible man-made scale of Christian-ness. My personal reasoning 6 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

for being a vegan is based on how I feel God leading me. His communication is different with everyone. There is beauty in how He knows us all so personally. With this knowledge, He understands how to tailor a specific path for our lives. If you ve ever felt pressured or judged by other Christians about something like your diet, run straight to God for His opinion on that area of your life. To this day I stick to a vegan diet, with the exception of a few dairy items every now and then. When I do eat products containing dairy, I know that God isn t holding it against me. Fear isn t ruling my commitment. My dietary choices are made out of a passion for health and a love for helping others. At the end of the day, Love is my only true motivation. Jacqueline Dohna is a senior Psychology student here at Andrews University. JANUARY 30, 2016 7

In the SDA Hymnal, many hymns have this information in the upper right corner of a given hymn. Sometimes these tunes have survived a long history of use. Today in worship, several historic hymn melodies occur. In the first service, the melody known as "ST. ANNE" (103) occurs in the "Spirit of the Ages Fanfare," and other historic melodies undergird the children's offertory. In the second service, the sturdy melody EIN' FESTE BURG (506) occurs both in organ music (opening voluntary) and by the winds and percussion later. And who does not know the melody of "Amazing Grace" (108)? Hearing instrumental versions provides opportunity to meditate on associated hymn texts. JANUARY 30, 2016 9

Important Changes to UPC/Label Guidelines for Investment Please take note of this important change regarding the type of UPC codes eligible for investment. Cedar Lakes Foods remains unaffected by this change. Please continue to submit those UPC codes as before. This information is from the Michigan Conference Headquarters. Since Atlantic Natural Foods has bought the Loma Linda brand, the only eligible UPC codes from labels are for the Loma Linda, Worthington, and Caroline's canned food items. UPC codes from any frozen foods and any Morningstar products are no longer eligible for investment. Therefore, effective immediately, please do not submit labels or UPC codes from any frozen foods or Morningstar products. The only UPC codes now accepted are for canned products with the UPC codes of 28989 or 45561. Even though frozen foods may begin with this number, they are no longer being accepted. Money received from ANF for labels is sent to the Michigan Conference, not to the churches from which the labels are sent.
