Christ Church (Parish Church) Second Sunday in Advent/Youth Presentation 8:30 am HOLY COMMUNION BCP (Collect, Epistle and Gospel on Insert) 10:30 am YOUTH PRESENTATION & HOLY COMMUNION BCP Prelude: Prelude on a Norwegian Carol S. Gabrielsen Processional Hymn There s a Voice in the Wilderness Calling 106 THE LIGHTING OF THE SECOND ADVENT CANDLE: PEACE Advent is a time for waiting; waiting for God to bring his kingdom to our world. We wait for PEACE that will end war and everything that leads to war: anger, revenge, hatred, greed and prejudice. As we light our second candle, may it be a sign of the peace that must begin in our own hearts. Peace is a ribbon that circles the earth, Giving a promise of safety and worth. When God is a child, there s joy in our song. The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong And none shall be afraid. Collect of the Day Almighty God, who sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Epistle 2 Peter 3:8-15a But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord s patience means salvation
Gospel Mark 1: 1-8 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way a voice of one calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
