saint FRancis xavier parish August 14, 2016 St. Francis Xavier Parish NYC Let us not lose sight of Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection. ~Hebrews 12:2 Our Mission Statement St. Francis Xavier is a Catholic- Jesuit parish ignited by the Eucharist To Pray, Serve, Do Justice, and Love.

Our Shared Stories of Mercy at St. Francis Xavier It was Saturday evening, a week after a family vacation in Arizona. My wife told me she was taking our daughter to Now-Care at the hospital as she was not feeling well. Now-Care was closed for the day so they were told to go to the ER at St. Patrick s. Doctors said things did not look good so right away they admitted her to the ICU. My wife called to tell me that our daughter had been admitted. I went up to see her and talked with her briefly, she said this was the last place she expected to be and soon after she was plugged into machines with tubes and cords on her arms. A trach tube was placed in her throat and one in her mouth to help her breathing. She couldn t,t talk at this point, but communicated by writing on a small white board. Pneumonia or heart failure were the possible reason s for our daughter s illness. A doctor pulled us aside and asked us what actions they should take if things got worse. We agreed that things got worse to a point of no return to not do anything. As the days passed our daughter s condition got worse. She was no longer able to communicate with us and by the third week in one day 3 priests came to visit and pray with her. Fr. Carver was the last to visit and her gave her last rites as the rest of the family was gathered around. My wife had stayed with her every night up to that point. With everyone being exhausted the family went home, which was only a short drive across the river. Around 11:30 that evening a nurse from ICU called the house to tell that we should get there as things were not looking good. We arrived at the ICU and stood by the bedside for 4 or 5 hours. I held a rosary in my hand and prayed many decades, both in the room with my daughter and in the waiting room. I started to plan her funeral as we sat together in the waiting room. I envisioned the cemetery plot and pile of dirt next to it. The church elevator would need an usher for all the people who would attend the funeral service. There would be lots of Mexican food at the reception, it being our daughter s favorite. Morning came and our daughter was still holding on to life. The day went by and that afternoon she started responding to sounds and voices. It had been 24 hours since she had received last rites when she opened her eyes. We all looked at each other in amazement. It was a miracle in my eyes; she was coming back to us. Steadily she improved over the next three days. One by one the tubes were removed from her arms and mouth. She tried to talk as soon as she physically was able to so a speech therapist was called in to help her form words again. I pressed her to say words, lots of words. Things like the music scale, going up and down, over and over, along with many other words. Many visitors came to visit her including friends from New Directions Wellness Center. One visitor came up with the idea to have a special guest come and visit the next day. We wondered if it would be too much excitement for our daughter after all that she had been through. The doctor believed it would be okay, so the next afternoon Monte, the University of Montana Grizzly mascot arrived. There were many smiles and pictures taken as Monte visited. It was a week after she had been anointed and we were heading home. The next day I spoke with Fr. Perry and he informed me that the previous week he too had been planning my daughter s funeral. She had spent the entire month of May in the ICU and she was our miracle child once again. ~Please consider sharing your story with us. 2
