Scope and Content Note Thomas Treadwell Eaton (1845 1907) served as pastor of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky from 1881 to 1907, but his influence on Southern Baptists extended far beyond his congregation. Serving as editor of the Western Recorder, the Kentucky Baptist paper, from 1887 to 1907, he influenced large numbers of people throughout the Convention. He played a major role in the opposition to William Heth Whitsett, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The sermon collection was given to the Historical Commission in 1954. The collection includes 1.25 linear feet of material and consists of 15 handwritten sermon books, one separate sermon manuscript, and a travel brochure for a "Baptist pilgrimage. The sermons are dated from 1871 to 1902 and usually indicate the location and date of the sermon's delivery. There is no particular order of the sermons in the bound volumes. Each sermon has a scripture title, and the inventory lists the title, scripture citation, and the date the sermon was first preached. A companion to this collection is the Eaton Papers on microfilm (MF 1057).
