LIFEGROUP GUIDE Romans 9: Letting God Be God Head What is the source of Paul s angst in verse 2? Who are the children of Abraham (looking at verses 6-13)? Does anyone have insights from their time in the devotional this week that they want to share regarding how the Old Testament illuminates this passage? Heart First- Do you share Paul s angst for the lost? Second- If so, for whom? Talk about verse 16: So then [on whom God has mercy and compassion] depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. What s your gut reaction to this passage? Read verses 19-29 again. Which (if any) verse gives you the most confidence in your faith? Which (if any) gets under your skin the most? Hands Write in just a sentence or two your own declaration of faith in God s mercy. Something short and memorable, in your own words. Share it aloud if you are willing. Ask the Holy Spirit for at least one opportunity to speak or share in written form that assurance with someone else this week.

LIFEGROUP GUIDE Romans 10 Salvation to All Head How are we saved? (Look at verses 8-13) What is the point of Paul s series of questions in verses 14-21? Summarize what God is saying about the Israelites in verses 18-21. Did any of the devotional passages from this week help you understand Chapter 10? How so? Heart When you use the categories of us and them in regular conversation, who are you referring to? Write this down, you don t have to share this. But then share as a group, how does verse 12 challenge your categories of us and them? Here s a heart check: Do you have more passion (zeal verse 4) for the right way of doing things, whether church services, politics, or relationships OR for telling people about Jesus (preaching the good news in verse 15)? Where is that passion being fostered? Look at verse 10 - are your heart and mouth always in agreement? Does one betray the other? What needs to shift to help these come into alignment with one another in your life? Hands How might you stir up the passion in one another for sharing about Jesus? Are you saved? How do you know? If you are, share verses 8-13 in your own words. Pray for opportunities to share your story with someone, perhaps even a particular person, this week. If you are not yet saved, share what is holding you back from confessing and believing. 13

LIFEGROUP GUIDE Israel Romans 11 Head What is the primary issue Paul is addressing in this chapter? Have someone summarize the metaphor of the tree with the branches as God s family. Who is the root? Who are the natural branches? Who is the grafted in wild olive shoot? And what does this say about God s family? Verse 25 refers to the present and the future of Israel s salvation as a mystery. What can we know? What don t we know? Heart In what way does this chapter about Israel s present and future feel relevant to you, personally? How do you respond to the concluding verses, verses 33-36? Is that satisfying? Unsatisfying? Praiseworthy? Confusing? Hands Practice praise as you close. Have each person offer a word of praise for an prayer answered, a mystery they don t understand, for salvation, for God s creation, for his mercy and justice. 19
