After hearing God s Word proclaimed and preached, why do we recite the Nicene Creed? At the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325, the bishops summarized the fundamentals of the Catholic faith. This is the reason why this creed is called The Nicene Creed. The purpose of the Creed or Profession of Faith is that the whole gathered people may respond to the Word of God proclaimed in the readings taken from Sacred Scripture and explained in the Homily and that they may also honor and confess the great mysteries of the faith by pronouncing the rule of faith in a formula approved for liturgical use and before the celebration of these mysteries in the Eucharist begins. General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 67 Those of us who have been baptized now have the saving opportunity to respond to God s Word by stating the creed publicly. At Mount Sinai, Moses read the Covenant of the Law to the people, and after doing so, the same people responded: All that the Lord has said we will do. In a similar manner, the recitation of the Creed is our way of saying: All that the Lord has said we will do. Thus, through our public recitation of the summary of the Church s belief, we declare and show ourselves openly that we are both disciples of Jesus and full members of the Catholic Church. Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Adults: What has it meant to you to take up your cross and follow Jesus? Children: When has it been hard to be a follower of Jesus? What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Matthew 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else. We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God s values and not the values of the material world.
