IMPORTANT PLEASE READ! As a means to help us better understand and appreciate the Sacred Liturgy, especially the Eucharistic Prayer, and the need to suppress or, at the very least, reduce movement and activity at this critical part of the Mass, I thought it would be helpful to print some simple instruction that would lend itself for this purpose. I came across the following article recently and have edited it to coincide with the Revised Missal. Fr. James Once the gifts of bread and wine have been prepared, presented and offered to God, the Eucharistic Prayer begins. It starts with the greeting: The Lord be with you! You ve already been greeted twice before in this way at the beginning of Mass and before the proclamation of the Gospel. So why do we repeat this greeting again in the middle of the Mass? Because we need to pray with much more intensity now, and we are going to need God s help. We are strongly encouraged: Lift up your hearts! This is the only way we are to be able to take in what is about to happen by giving our hearts the absolute core of who we are to the Lord! We are also told and reminded what our response and the way that we live our entire lives is to be: Let us give thanks to the Lord! This beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer leads us by invitation to literally join the Angels and the Saints as they are offering to Almighty God their worship, adoration and praise at this very moment in Heaven. And so, with them we sing and cry out: Holy, Holy, Holy! At this moment in the Mass, it is as if both time and space were being unzipped and there were no separation between Heaven and earth, between time and eternity. We are one with, and present to, all the Heavenly Host we are all caught up with adoring, worshipping, and loving Our Awesome God at the same time. And in unity we are exclaiming and praising: Holy, Holy, Holy! At the heart of the Eucharistic Prayer, are the words of Consecration. Please notice the shift in the verb tenses. The first part is in the past tense, in a familiar storytelling style: For on the night He was betrayed, He took bread and giving You thanks, He said the blessing But when we come to the words Jesus spoke on that night, we move into the present tense: This is My Body, This is My Blood Why? because as Catholic Christians we believe Jesus truly becomes present in this moment. He is literally here in His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. The bread and the wine are no longer bread and wine; they only appear as bread and wine but it is truly and literally Christ Jesus! While I offer the bread and the wine to God on behalf of us and say the words of Consecration over them, I am only a representative of Christ. I act in the Name of the Lord, Jesus Christ. However, He is the real Priest. It is always Christ who offers Himself for us at each Mass and makes present to us now as we celebrate what already took place at Calvary two thousand years ago in an un-bloody manner. As you can see, this is the summit of the Mass and the atmosphere should be one of silence and awe. Therefore, unless it s absolutely necessary, please refrain from all unnecessary movement. If you must leave your pew for an emergency, please do so quietly before or after Prayer of Consecration. However, if the Consecration is taking place as you re ready to return, please remain in the vestibule, bowing or genuflecting at the elevation of the Consecrated Host and Chalice. Only after the two major elevations take place, should you return to your seat. Thank you.

FAMILY by Fr. James Molgano Have you ever wondered about the origin of words And of how they came to be of when and by whom they were formed and defined to give language its meaning and clarity? A strange phenomenon, I suppose, words are much like space and time, a reality quite inexplicable and mysterious but yet a friend of mine. As words are, they simply come and go, a helper in time of want and need, but every once in a while a word is recalled that brings us a bit closer to one another with hints of eternity. Family is that special word for there can be no other that best defines us and endears us to those we call mother, father, sister and brother. Much more than a simple definition or a term to be irresponsibly tossed about, family is a holy word, designed by Heaven above, for which there can be little doubt. You see, God gave us father and mother that comprise the first of letters three, for His Image and Likeness, He conceived His plan, so we would share in the intimate Union of Blessed Trinity. The next three letters i, l and y comprise the rest of this beautiful word, and they are perhaps the most meaningful of all, across the land and beyond, for the most sacred words mankind has ever heard. I love you! God first spoke to man and woman, in His Eternal Word He created them good, He cared for them and loved them unconditionally, as only Our Father God in Heaven could. But He told them to be fertile and multiply and to teach their children the virtue of love, for there is no better way to express and convey our origin from Heaven above. And so, you see, we are precious and wonderfully made in the Image of the Godhead Three, of Heaven and earth of infinite worth, let us thank God above, Who taught us love and gave us FAMILY!

FASTING & ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS FOR LENT Ash Wednesday (February 14th) & Good Friday (March 30th) are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting almsgiving. and prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance, and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. ADULT FAITH FORMATION AND RCIA Every sport has its own specialized vocabulary, a language that makes perfect sense to people who know the sport and little or no sense to people who don t play the game. For instance, for golfers the terms birdie, eagle, and albatross have nothing to do with ornithology and everything to do with making par. The same is true for the Catholic Church. A specialized language is used to talk about the great mysteries of the faith. Join us for our next session as we take a closer look at The Sacraments Baptism and Confirmation, what they are and the role they play in the lives of believers. Everyone is welcome, so don't forget to invite a friend or two! Tuesdays 6:00pm in the Parish Hall. Registration is FREE call Agnes Mulligan 772-214- 7460 or email e725@comcast.net.
