From: "Florence Hood" To: james-mccabe Sent: Friday, January 2, 2015 6:41:30 PM Subject: B24 downed over Palau Sept 2, 1944 MIA Hello Mr. McCabe, My Uncle, Cpl. Hubble Fellows, is listed MIA after the B24 bomber he was assigned to was hit by enemy fire and ditched in the sea on September 2, 1944 by Palau. His Service ID# was 32697120. He was in the 13th USAAF, 307th Bomber Group, 371st Brigade (The Lone Rangers). The plane's pilot was Robert Parenti. He and three others were rescued after 26 hours at sea, but my uncle and the other crew as I understand it were never found. Robert Parenti sent a letter dated September 30th, 1944 tohubble's wife describing the event. The family has kept a copy of that letter as we have always hoped that someday there might be news about possibly locating Hubble's remains. The only other information I was able to locate is the possible incident MACR # 15600.. We would be so very grateful if you would be able to give us any information as to how to pursue our quest for any information about the possibility for location of this plane and any of its occupants. With sincere thanks, Florence Hood

I am very familiar with the loss of your Uncle Hubble as it is well documented. If there is any hope to locate and recover these men, it would be through the Bent Prop Project, Give me a call when you can pull up our website,www.307bg.net Also for future reference Hubble belonged to the 13th USAAF, 307th Bombardment Group, 371st Bombardment Squadron (The Long Rangers). Have you read and/or seenunbroken at the movies yet? Louie Zamperini was a Bombardier with the 307th BG. As historian, I would love to have a copy of Lt. Parenti's letter. I hope to hear from you soon. My contact information is below. If your a night owl, I'm sure I'll be up until midnight this evening. All the best, Jim Jim McCabe, Historian 307th BG Assoc. www.307bg.net

Parenti to our 307th BG Assoc.officers/volunteers as some of their own father's/grandfather's may have been on this mission with your uncle. What a wonderful letter! Thanks for sharing it. I enjoyed speaking with you this morning. I have researched our files and have located the orgiinal 8 pages of records pertaining to the loss of Hubble. It includes the Mission Report (3 pages), Search and Rescue Report (1 page) and the Intelligence Officer's Report (4 pages). Here's what I need you to do, join our assoc., as these records are only available to 307th BG Assoc. members. The good news is that membership is very inexpensive. Here's the link to join: http://307bg.net/member/ If you join our Assoc. I will research our records and provide you with any Mission Plans, Mission Reports, Crew Loading Lists, Photos and Combat Videos available. If you are interested in further information on your uncle's military service with the Long Ranger's, to start, I would recommend you secure copies of both Up The Slot by Samuel I Walker, and The Long Rangers A Diary of the 307th Bombardment Group (H), by Sam Britt. Both of these are available at our websites PX at our cost. www.307bg.net http://www.shop.307bg.net/ Start a file with the above. Having his ASN (Army Serial Number) is essential to additional searching. I will need some additional info if you or potentially other family members have anything else you can offer like: letter's home, insignia on his jacket, photos, etc. Push hard on this. It is common that someone in the family has a box somewhere and that they have had it so long, they don't remember.
You might want to re-register your uncle at this site clarifying that he was attached to the Army Air Corps, and adding his 371st. Bombardment Squadron number and possibly the 307th Bombardment Group, 371st Bombardment Squadron and Long Ranger patches: As we discussed, he will be forever memorialized at the WWII Memorial in Washington DC. I'm glad you've been to it. If you have not been to the Air Force Memorial, check it out the next time you go to D.C. There is a section pertaining to the campaigns of the 307th BG: There are two other books which I believe you will find of great interest. The first is Vanished by Wil Hylton. The day before your uncle was lost, another 307th BG crew was lost over Palau.
If you have not done so, read Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. The movie came out Xmas Day. Louie Zamperini was one of our Bombardiers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrjJbl7kRrI I hope you will consider joining us at our next reunion this coming Sept. in New Orleans. I know you would never regret meeting some of the veterans who flew missions with your uncle. http://www.307bg.net/reunion/index.asp All the best, Jim Jim McCabe, Historian 307th BG Assoc. www.307bg.net

I was so surprised by your quick response...and thanks for your correction to the terminology I was using regarding the different designations - not ever being in the military... I have been in contact (email sent at the same time I contacted you) with BentProp. Dan O'Brien responded also! He gave me contact suggestions and advised me to go about getting a DNA sample taken. I am attaching for your use a copy of the letter I mentioned in my first email. I am taken back by the dedication you have with this important pursuit, and I am determined to see this quest through to the best of my ability. For your help and your response - thanks! I am hoping now, more than I dared before, to having Hubblebrought home - as remote as that possibility might be. Meantime, Have a great day! Florence Hood
