The first reading today refers to the story of the Israelites and the serpents. These venomous creatures were biting and killing the people of Israel wandering in the desert. Moses begged God to save them from the affliction. God chose a strange antidote to the poison: he told Moses to mount a bronze serpent on a pole. Those who looked at it survived. In the Gospel reading, John refers to this historical event in the context of salvation. Then, the people of God were saved from physical death by looking up. Now, we are saved from spiritual death in much the same way. Through the cross where Jesus was lifted up, God has given us an antidote to the poison of sin. The habits of selfishness that threaten to suffocate our souls can be overcome when we raise our eyes to this cross upon which Christ made the ultimate act of selflessness. Today at Mass, many of us will sing the rousing hymn Lift High the Cross and call to mind this triumphant sign that has come to be equivalent with Christianity itself. The cross is our symbol, our banner, and our hope. As Christians, we march behind it with confidence and courage because through it, even the most fearsome of all human realities sin and death have been conquered. Now we can enjoy the gift of eternal life. But, like the children of Israel wandering in the desert, we have to participate in our own salvation. God desired that they actively look at the bronze seraph instead of passively being cured. So too, we must choose to actively embrace the cross of Christ by modeling our lives after the generous, life-giving love of the Lord. -3-

Pastor s Page Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your participation in choosing the color for the new curtains in the lower church and the rectory meeting room. 317 parishioners made their choice. Here are the numbers; Color #1 WHEAT 37 Color#2 ICE BLUE 144 Color #3 PEACOCK (GREEN) 91 Color #4 MOLESKIN (DARK BEIGE) 45 So we are ordering the Ice Blue curtains. We are grateful to the Fr. Thomas Judge Council of the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation from the Annual Feast that is making this possible. Also the Pastoral Transition Team has scheduled open Town Hall meetings for your input on the future direction of the parish after every Mass on the weekend of September 27 th and 28 th, and an evening meeting on October 1. You will also find their questionnaire in the bulletin. We have been asked by several parishioners about the question What do you want to keep? Their question is that if something is not listed by anyone, will it be dropped? No, nothing will be dropped just because it isn t listed by respondents. We have a great parish. The purpose of the question is to reflect on, and build upon, the many great things that are happening in our parish every day. I am grateful to the Team and you, the parishioners, for your help in guiding me, the Parish Council and the Finance Committee into the future. Thanks God bless you all, Loving and compassionate God, help us to stay open to your guidance and to trust that you want the best for our parish. May the new pastor continue to empower the members of our parish and may we, the parishioners, be generous and supportive as we begin this new journey. Be with the transition team of our parish. Give them wisdom, courage and the energy they will need to move us through this important time of transition. May all of this bring us closer to you and to each other. We ask this, O God, in the name of your son, Jesus and the spirit of love. Amen -4-
