99 Jesus Demostrates His Authority Mark 1:21-28 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Jesus Preaches With Authority Mark begis this passage with a demostratio of Jesus authority. Jesus was differet from those who usually spoke i the syagogue. Whe Jesus iterpreted the passage he read, he did so with authority so much authority that the people oticed how differet he was from the ormal teachers of the Law. Demos Take Notice of Jesus Authority Jesus apparetly was makig such a impressio that the demo possessig a ma felt the eed to create a distractio. The demo referred to himself i the plural. Apparetly more tha oe demo perhaps may of them were cotrollig this ma. Demos ad demo possessio are ot ofte discussed i the church today. I Jesus day, it seems that demo possessio was commoly kow. Perhaps it was more apparet because the demos opposed Jesus miistry. Jesus Demostrates Power Over Demos People Spread the Word About Jesus The people preset were amazed at Jesus authority just from hearig him teach. But whe demos obeyed his commads, those watchig saw that Jesus had the power to back up his authority. He was the all-powerful So of God. Ad whe people left the syagogue that day, they bega tellig everyoe i the whole regio who Jesus was. After this evet, Jesus could o loger go aywhere i the regio of Galilee without beig recogized ad surrouded by people watig to be healed by his miraculous power. The Jesus Coectio Jesus power goes far beyod what we ca comprehed. Yet we ca begi to uderstad the worth of Jesus love for us. We may ot uderstad the demo possessio that s described i this passage, but we ca stad amazed at Jesus power. Do you comprehed the magitude of Jesus power? What do you believe Jesus power ca do i your life? Go to Jesus with your eeds, your hopes, your fears, ad let his power comfort ad guide you. You ca write your prayer here. The demos i this story clearly kew who Jesus was. The Holy Oe of God is a ame for the promised Messiah. So why would a demo make himself kow to Jesus? The demos may have bee attemptig to deceive people listeig to Jesus that he was i league with them. However, Jesus cut short the demos dialogue. Notice that there was o protest whe Jesus spoke to the demos. They kew they had to obey ad did so immediately. Grades 1 & 2 Lesso 9 Witer Quarter

Allow time for kids to discuss the questios withi their groups, ad why each questio matters. The ivite groups to share. Say: What Jesus did was really amazig. Here s how the people aroud reacted: Read Mark 1:27-28. Say: These Bible verses really did show us that JESUS IS ALL-POWERFUL. Jesus had the power to sed a evil spirit out of a ma! Our Key Verse goes a step further to help us uderstad eve more how powerful Jesus is. Help kids fid Romas 8:38-39 i their Bibles. Say: Liste to what the Bible says: For I am coviced that either death or life, either agels or demos, either the preset or the future, or ay powers, either height or depth, or aythig else i all creatio, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is i Christ Jesus our Lord (Romas 8:38-39). Grades 1 & 2 Lesso 9 Witer Quarter

102 Say: That meas absolutely othig ca separate us from the love of God! Let s say our Key Verse together. Lead kids i repeatig the simplified verse several times: For I am coviced that othig ca separate us from the love of God (Romas 8:38-39). Jesus showed God s love to the ma i our Bible verses by helpig him. Not eve a evil spirit could separate the ma from God s love, because Jesus was right there to show God s love i actio. Talk With Kids Lead childre i this discussio. Ask: What do you thik was separatig the ma from the love of God? What seems most powerful to you about Jesus? How does Jesus show God s love to you ad your family? Say: Our Key Verse tells us that othig othig at all ca separate us from the love of God, because Jesus will be right there to show us God s love. That s because Jesus is more powerful tha aythig that could try to get betwee us ad God. Our Bible Poit says that JESUS IS ALL-POWERFUL. He ca do aythig! 3 WEAVING FAITH INTO LIFE Draw by His Power Supplies small paper clips maget paper! MAGNET WARNING Draw by His Power What You ll Do Place several paper clips o a table, ad have childre gather aroud. Say: Let s preted that these paper clips are us. Ad let s preted that this maget is Jesus. Demostrate how the maget attracts the paper clips. Say: The force of the maget is so powerful that it pulls the paper clips right over to it. Ad the force of God s love i Jesus is so powerful that he pulls us toward him, just as the maget pulls the paper clips. Let childre take turs attractig the paper clips to the maget. Say: But sometimes problems get i the way of God s love ad separate us from Jesus. I the Bible today, the problem was a evil spirit. The Bible says that othig ca separate us from the love of God that s i Jesus. Let me show you what that s like. Witer Quarter Lesso 9 Grades 1 & 2

103 Have two childre hold the sheet of paper horizotally above the table. Place the paper clips o the paper. Say: Let s say that this sheet of paper stads for all of the problems that separate us from God. Place the maget uder the paper, ad demostrate how the maget still moves the paper clips. The ivite childre to try the same experimet. Say: See how the maget still moves the paper clips? The paper could t separate the paper clips from the force of the maget. That s how it is with Jesus love. His love is so powerful that othig o problems that we have ad o fears that we face ca ever separate us from Jesus love. Talk With Kids Lead childre i this discussio. Ask: What were you thikig durig this experimet? Tell about some problems people have. Explai whether you thik those problems are more powerful tha Jesus love. What do you like about the power of Jesus love? Say: The maget s power was really cool. But ot as cool as Jesus power ad how he set the evil spirit from the ma. Jesus love for you really is the most powerful thig. This week, remember that othig ca separate you from Jesus love because JESUS IS ALL-POWERFUL! Chagig Puppets What You ll Do Say: Let s make puppets to help us remember ad tell others what Jesus did i Mark 1:21-28. Remember how Jesus power chaged the ma with the bad spirit? We re goig to make puppets that chage, too! Give each child a spoo, ad show kids how to draw a sad face o the bowl of the spoo ad a happy face o the rouded side of the spoo. Explai that the sad face represets the ma before Jesus used his power to help him. The happy face represets the ma after Jesus helped him. Chagig Puppets Supplies My Bible Fu plastic spoos scissors permaet markers tape Give each child a My Bible Fu page, ad poit out the Chagig Puppets sectio. Have childre cut out the costumes. They ll tape the eat-lookig clothig o the side with the happy face ad the disheveled-lookig clothig o the side with the sad face. Kids ca the tape the edges of the costumes together at the sides. 104 Talk With Kids Lead childre i this discussio. Ask: What do you like about your chagig puppet? Why do you thik it s cool that Jesus ca chage people like that? How would you like Jesus to chage you? Say: The Bible says that the ews of Jesus power spread quickly all over the area. Jesus love is so powerful that it ca help us ad chage us every time we eed it. This week, whe somethig seems hard or sad, remember Jesus love ad remember that JESUS IS ALL-POWERFUL. 4 LASTING IMPRESSIONS Daily Challeges Supplies My Bible Fu Daily Challeges What You ll Do Say: Let s thik about how JESUS IS ALL-POWERFUL. They ca choose oe or more of these three optios: Ru aroud your frot yard util you start to get tired, ad the thak Jesus that he s all-powerful so that whe we re weak, he s strog! Help your family members with their chores this week. Remid them that eve though we ca t do everythig, God ca! Each time you tur the lights o i your room, thak Jesus for his power. Make sure you choose a Daily Challege as well, ad tell kids what you chose. Kids will be more iclied to follow through o their commitmets whe they see you doig the same.
