Step 4 What Do I Believe Scriptures The following are a list of suggested scriptures to use as a starting point. Lies About Myself 1. I donʼt belong, I often feel left out. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:4-5 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:5 All of you together are Christʼs body, and each of you is a part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27 Know that the LORD is God he made us; we belong to him. Psalm 100:3 2. I am a disappointment. And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you. Philippians 1:6 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 3. My feelings are rarely cared about by others. The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. Psalms 103:13 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you. 1 Peter 5:7 You know how troubled I am; you have kept a record of my tears. Psalm 56:6 4. I will always be lonely. So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deut. 31:6 1

Donʼt fear, because I am with you; donʼt be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will surely help you; I will hold you with my righteous strong hand. Isaiah 41:10 5. I must keep up walls to avoid being hurt and rejected. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. James 1:5 In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? Psalm 56:11 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. Psalm 147:3 6. I deserve to be unhappy. I am leaving you with a gift peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So donʼt be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Donʼt be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength! Nehemiah 8:10 7. I am the problem. Usually when something goes wrong it is my fault. The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. Psalm 37:23,24 Thatʼs why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. James 3:2 8. I donʼt deserve love. The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. Psalm 103:4 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8 2

9. I am shameful. If we confess our sins he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 32:5 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 10. If anyone knew the real me, they wouldnʼt want to be around me. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12 I, yes, I alone will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again. Isaiah 43:25I I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalms 139:14 11. I am unimportant. I will call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:6, 8 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:16 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with Godʼs people and also members of his household. Ephesians 2:19 12. I never get credit for anything I do. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:3-5 Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, You are the God who sees me. She also said, Have I truly seen the One who sees me? Genesis 16:13 13. I cannot trust myself. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. John 16:13 3

For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. Proverbs 3:26 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge the Lord in all your ways and He will make your path straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 14. I am never good enough, something is always wrong. My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 For we are Godʼs masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10 And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful! Psalm 90:17 15. I am a failure/will fail. But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9,10 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 16. I cannot protect myself. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and He will come close to you. James 4:7,8 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. Psalm 91:1, 2 Donʼt worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6,7 17. I am weak. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Isaiah 40:29 That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, 4

persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10 For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 18. I am not smart enough. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. I Corinthians 1:27 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1:30 But Moses pleaded with the Lord, O Lord, Iʼm not very good with words. I never have been, and Iʼm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled. Then the Lord asked Moses, Who makes a personʼs mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say. Exodus 4:10-12 19. I have to be in control or everything will fall apart. Let go of your concerns! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth. Psalm 46:10 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 20. I am not attractive enough. Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. I Samuel 16:7 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 5

21. I am not competent or complete as a woman/man. That the man/woman of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:17 I knew you before I formed you in your motherʼs womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. 2 Corinthians 3:4-5 22. I will always be (angry, shy, jealous, insecure, fearful, etc.) See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6 23. This is just how my family is/i am; I canʼt change. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6 The Lord isnʼt really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:9 24. I will never be known or appreciated for my real self. But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So donʼt be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Luke 12:7 25. My life will always have conflict and turmoil. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. Psalm 91: 1-2 6

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matt 11:28,30 26. I have made such a mess of my life; it can never get better. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
