LIVING A FOCUSED LIFE! Introduction: A. Open Your Bibles To The Book Of Philippians. B. The Philippian Congregation Was A Loving, Faithful, Devoted Group Of Christians. 1. Paul loved and appreciated them dearly! 2. He wanted them to stay true to the Lord and His Will! C. In This Book He Encouraged Them About Living A Focused Life! D. We Need To Take Heed From His Encouragements To Them And Be Concerned In Our Own Lives About Living A Focused Life! I. (Slide #2) Illustrations -- Becoming Unfocused Can Be VERY Detrimental To What You Are Doing! A. Concentrated Focus In Sports Is Vital! 1. I watch children who have not learned discipline of their minds who do not do well in a sport that they could do well in because of being distracted by other competitors or by spectators (family, friends, or the whole crowd). 2. Arnold Palmer losing focus in a Master s Golf Tournament. a. Palmer was a GREAT golfer! b. He tells a story about what happened on the final hole of the 1961 Masters tournament I had a one-stroke lead and had just hit a very satisfying tee shot. I felt I was in pretty good shape. As I approached my ball, I saw an old friend standing at the edge of the gallery. He motioned me over, stuck out his hand and said, Congratulations. I 1

took his hand and shook it, but as soon as I did, I knew I had lost my focus. c. What happened then? On my next two shots, I hit the ball into a sand trap, then put it over the edge of the green. I missed a putt and lost the Masters. d. Lesson learned: You don t forget a mistake like that; you just learn from it and become determined that you will never do that again. I haven t in the 30 years since. e. This story was related by Carol Mann, The 19th Hole, (Longmeadow), quoted in Reader s Digest. B. A Fable Is Told About A Hungry Tiger 1. A hungry tiger started tracking the scent of a deer. As he followed the deer, he came across the scent of a rabbit. He turned aside and started after the rabbit. Then he was distracted by the scent of a mouse and started following that. He finally came to the hole into which the mouse had vanished. He ended the day hungrier than when he had started the day. 2. This fable illustrates how many spend their lives distracted with this or that, and at the end of the day -- they have accomplished little. C. NOWHERE Is This More Dangerous That In Our Spiritual Lives! D. So Many Things Pull And Tug At Our Time, At Our Attention, And At Our Hearts! 1. We can be so easily diverted to things of lesser importance. 2. We can easily lose our focus! E. Paul Urges The Godly And Faithful Philippians To Continue Living A Focused Life! II. Paul s Advice To The Philippians -- Living A Focused Life! A. (Slide #3) The Main Text For This Sermon: Phil. 3:13,14 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 1. Paul did not have 100 goals; he had 1 goal! 2. All of his energy is given to pressing toward the goal of the prize! 2

B. (Slide #4) Paul Talks About Living A Focused Life NOW -- Seeking To Imitate Jesus! 1. Phil. 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 2. Cultivate the heart and mind of Christ -- like Jesus, serve others! 3. ( ) And when you are Living A Focused Life now, you find a peace and contentment that is SO powerful and buttressing! a. Phil. 4:11-13 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. b. Luke quoted Jesus who pointedly expressed this idea in Ac. 20:35 And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. C. (Slide #5) Paul Talks About Living A Focused Life With An Aim On The Eternal Prize! 1. Focusing upon an end is SO important if you want to be successful. a. My grandfather talked about how to make straight rows through a field or garden -- pick a spot as your goal; keep your eyes on it until you are there. b. Now we seek to imitate Jesus -- Heb. 12:1,2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. c. We look forward to going home to be with Him! 2. Phil. 3:10-16 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in 3

Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. a. This is SUCH a powerful passage! b. Paul talks about what he gave up; what he no longer counted as important! 1. His heritage: Phil. 3:5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; 2. Respect for the Law of Moses: concerning the law, a Pharisee; Phil. 3:5 3. His zeal -- He was SO zealous for His beliefs: concerning zeal, persecuting the church; Phil. 3:6 4. He was SO loyal to his beliefs! concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. Phi. 3:6 c. Paul realized he could not be justified by living under the Law of Moses; he learned that he needed to have faith in Jesus as the Christ and as the Savior! Phil. 3:7-11 1. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 2. He got his focus right -- it was NOT on the Law of Moses; it was NOT on Him finding justification within himself -- he could ONLY be justified by being in Christ! d. Now, in Christ, Paul wanted to KNOW everything about Jesus -- as He suffered, he wanted to fully grasp and understand the suffering that Jesus endured for him! 3. Phil. 3:20,21 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. 4. ( ) And even as he faced death, Paul continued Living A Focused Life! a. II Tim. 4:7,8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. b. His hope was SO steadfast; his faith SO certain even as he faced death! 4

c. He could not possibly give up that goal of Heaven; he could not get distracted, NO MATTER WHAT! D. ( ) Balance In Living A Focused Life Is Important! 1. We may want to remain here; we may want to go Home! 2. Phil. 1:23,24 For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 3. Phil. 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 4. We must keep striving and Living A Focused Life as long as we live! Phil. 2:12,13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. II. (Slide #6) How Are WE Living? Are We Living A Focused Life? A. There Are SO MANY THINGS That Seem Good, That Seem Needed, And In Which We Think We Can Make A Difference! B. Are You Pulled In So Many Directions That You Do None Of Them Well? C. We Have To Live, Work, Care For Our House, Etc.! 1. Those are NECESSITIES AS WE LIVE ON EARTH. 2. But, do we lose our focus? Does this life become our consuming focus? 3. God help us all to be deeply concerned about Living A Focused Life! 5
