The Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church March 15, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Lent Children s Choir Workshop Weekend BECOMING AWARE We are made for goodness. We are made for love. We are made for friendliness. We are made for togetherness. We are made for all of the beautiful things that you and I know. We are made to tell the world that there are no outsiders. All are welcome: black, white, red, yellow, rich, poor, educated, not educated, male, female, gay, straight, all, all, all. We all belong to this family, this human family, God's family. Do your little bit of good wherever you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world. Desmond Tutu Welcome to Binkley! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. Visitors, welcome! Please fill out a visitor card and place it in the offering plate if this is your first time worshipping with us at Binkley. The arrangement on the communion table is given by Marge Miles in memory of Lew Miles, and in thanksgiving for having Dean Smith as a member of our church family for so many years. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Thank you for serving in the Nursery. DUET Mercy Now Mary Gauthier My father could use a little mercy now The fruits of his labor fall and rot slowly on the ground His work is almost over it won't be long, he won't be around I love my father, he could use some mercy now My brother could use a little mercy now He's a stranger to freedom, he's shackled to his fear and his doubt The pain that he lives in it's almost more than living will allow I love my brother, he could use some mercy now My church and my country could use a little mercy now As they sink into a poisoned pit it's going to take forever to climb out They carry the weight of the faithful who follow them down I love my church and country, they could use some mercy now HEARING OUR JOYS AND CONCERNS DISCIPLINE OF SILENCE Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good. God's mercy endures forever. Let us give thanks for the mercy of God, and for all the wonders of the Lord. Every living thing could use a little mercy now Only the hand of grace can end the race towards another mushroom cloud People in power, they'll do anything to keep their crown I love life and life itself could use some mercy now Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now I know we don't deserve it but we need it anyhow We hang in the balance dangle 'tween hell and hallowed ground And every single one of us could use some mercy now Every single one of us could use some mercy now Every single one of us could use some mercy now Stephanie Ford PASTORAL PRAYER (Upon hearing the words, Lord, in your mercy, respond, Hear our prayer. ) GOSPEL LESSON John 3: 14-17 SERMON Love Lifted Marcus McFaul RESPONDING CALL FOR THE OFFERING Consider the steadfast love of God in every breath you breathe. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I can do all things. I can clap, I can run, I can laugh, Ha, ha, ha!, in the Sun. I can stomp, I can shout, Praise the Lord! I can spread God s love about. I can jump, I can play, I can cheer, Hooray! I can pray. I can dance, Cha, cha, cha! I can sing, Tra, la, la. I can do most anything. *Doxology Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow 47 *UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION O Generous One, we give thanks to you for your steadfast love endures forever. May these gifts be used to feed the hunger and satisfy the thirst of all those you love throughout your creation. Amen. *HYMN OF INVITATION Amazing Grace 546 NEW BRITAIN If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church today, you are invited to come forward during the first verse of the hymn to be welcomed and received. *BENEDICTION *RESPONSE Go Now in Peace Natalie Sleeth POSTLUDE Sonata V G. F. Handel 4. Giga The Kyrie Eleison today is from Betty Carr Pulkingham s FREEDOM MASS, which is based on traditional African melodies. Instead of hearing an Agnus Dei as this morning s Response to the Benediction, we hear the children sing Natalie Sleeth s Go Now in Peace. Much like the final phrase of the Agnus Dei which says grant us peace, Sleeth s piece sends us into the world surrounded by the love and peace of the Eternal One. Today we are grateful for the musical gifts offered by the children from this weekend s Children s Choir Workshop; Colleen Keith Kingston & Kristen Gwaltney, guest clinicians; Jenny Walters, flute; Caryl Price, alto; Mike Davis and Janice Pope, piano; the Chancel Choir; and the Bell Choir. Following today s worship please take the opportunity to thank the participants, their families, and the clinicians from the Children s Choir Workshop at a brief reception in the Narthex before you go into Fellowship Hall for the Intentional Interim Kick-off Luncheon.
