WINTER 2009 Newsletter for ParishSOFT Users & Friends CONFERENCE HELPS USERS CONNECT PEOPLE TO THE CHURCH More than 140 Catholic Church professionals representing 42 Catholic dioceses attended the second annual ParishSOFT Users Conference at the historic Dearborn Inn in Dearborn, Michigan, on November 2-4, 2009. In his welcome to participants, Parish- SOFT President Bill Pressprich noted that the same information technology that is transforming the way people connect with each other can help the Church minister more effectively and reach people like never before. The Conference gives us a unique opportunity to learn from each other, said Pressprich, Gathering together is very valuable to the work of every Catholic parish and diocese. staff learn new and innovative ideas for ministry and administration, and in the process of getting to know each other better, they build a support network for learning that continues long after the Conference ends. Subjects included communicating the stewardship message, increasing contributions and involvement in parish ministries, sacramental recordkeeping, using accounting and census data in managing a parish, advanced data analysis and reporting, using technology to connect the people of God, and more. Morning Mass kept the event Christ-centered and gave perspective to each day s learning around the conference theme, Connecting People and the Church. New this year, the Support and Internet Café was a big hit, offering users faceto-face question and answer time with ParishSOFT support personnel. I am going home with answers that I desperately needed, said Dianna Rutledge, DRE of st Francis Xavier in Brunswick, Georgia. Keynote speaker Marilyn Blanchette, President of The Catholic Foundation of Central Florida, outlined how the Diocese of Orlando is calling people to greatness using a ten-step program that asks Catholics to grow in their personal relationship with Jesus in and through His Church, to lead fellow brothers and sisters to a new experience of holiness and abundant life in Christ, and to share God s love through the selfless contribution of time, talent, and continued on pg. 3 { PARISHSOFT OFFERINGS WINTER 2009 PAGE 1 }

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT We are one body, one body in Christ.... This song, set to a video of pictures of attendees, concluded the second annual ParishSOFT Users Conference. To view our slideshow, visit our website at www.parishsoft.com/usersconference/highlights.htm. It was a very profound and touching moment. We had gathered from 27 states and the Virgin Islands for a few short days and had bonded as brothers and sisters in Christ Now, we were going out, inspired and refreshed, ready to take up again our calling. The Masses were the highlight of the Conference for me enthusiastic, worshipful, inspiring readings and homilies, great music. Throughout the Conference, I really enjoyed meeting parish and diocesan staff and clergy and hearing their stories. I attended a number of the 40 different workshops the ones I liked best were the roughly half that were led by users telling about how they were involved in various aspects of ministry and how ParishSOFT helped them move from ad-ministration to ministry as one person expressed so well. We at ParishSOFT learned so much about the little things, like how some functionality in our software doesn t quite fit the daily workflow in a church office and the bigger things, like how our new software will more effectively connect people and the Church. Together, we fulfilled the purpose of the Users Conference: for users to learn from us, network and learn from each other, and for us to learn from our users. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the servants of the Lord. We were graced by the presence of so many of our users, who invested precious time and resources to visit us. On behalf of the whole ParishSOFT staff, I especially thank all of our presenters. As I write this, we are working on our conference location for next year. From past experience, the best location is the one within 100 miles of the largest city near me. This means that we need to move the Conference around to an easily accessed place near a large group of users. We will announce the location for the 2010 Conference in the next month or so. We look forward to seeing you next year! TOP 5 SMILING MOMENTS AT THE USERS CONFERENCE 5. Nothing breaks the ice at a lunch table full of strangers quite like an airborne dish of chocolate mousse which cleans up nicely off very forgiving parish staffers. 4. Dearborn Inn security responds quickly to noisy football fan complaints after 11 p.m. (Go Saints, go!) 3. Catholic Church professionals are surprisingly willing to lie down and play the hot dog inside the Oscar Mayer Weiner exhibit at The Henry Ford museum. 2. A great invention, the wireless microphone is even better if one remembers to turn it off before using the restroom. 1. Any 30-minute presentation can be condensed into 12 minutes if you talk fast enough. ONLINE GIVING IN TIME FOR YEAR-END Members who use the Internet to pay their monthly household bills want the same option to contribute to their church. Safe and secure, Online Giving is the perfect solution to give families flexible, paperless ways to contribute to collections and campaigns, as well as pay fees --without calling the church office. Studies have shown that churches increase annual offertory by 5 to 10% in the first year alone just by offering online giving as an option! Order now and make your personalized Online Giving web page, linked to your parish website, ready for those year-end contributions! Overall, this conference by far exceeded my expectations and is the best conference I have attended, said Deborah Tamburro, parish secretary at st John Parish, Viola, Kansas. Kathy Rhinehart, executive assistant for the Diocese of Tucson, came with a long list of questions prepared by her implementation team and participating parish members that addressed a number of their concerns, We came back very enthused & motivated. The conference opened new doors for us on how to move forward with our project. And like so many conference participants, she has found value in being more connected with the community of Catholic Church professionals. I ve already contacted 4 or 5 people from other dioceses, said Rhinehart. We re sharing strategies and learning from each other.
