ST. PIUS V CHURCH Dear parishioners, For over fifteen years now, the Second Sunday of Easter has been known throughout the Church as Divine Mercy Sunday. John Paul II announced the addition of the feast to the calendar at the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska on April 30, 2000. The timing was not a coincidence. stems from a series of private revelations communicated to St. Faustina in the 1930s. Among the messages that the Polish nun received from the Lord was the request that a special feast of mercy be held annually on the first Sunday following Easter. While the feast owes its designation to the efforts of two of Poland s most recent saints, the particular association of mercy and the Sunday after Easter has earlier roots. St. Augustine, for example, called the Easter Octave (which ends this Sunday) the days of mercy and pardon, and the Second Sunday itself he referred to as the compendium of the days of mercy. Since the designation of the feast in 2000, a special indulgence has been made available in connection with Divine Mercy Sunday. To receive the indulgence, the faithful are to make a sacramental confession (generally within 20 days before or after the feast), receive communion (preferably on the date of feast) and pray for the intentions of the pope, each with the aim of satisfying the indulgence. With specific reference to this feast, on Divine Mercy Sunday the faithful are also to take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy in any church or chapel, or, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., Merciful Jesus, I trust in you! ). A plenary indulgence is granted to those who satisfy the conditions in a spirit completely detached from sin, while a partial indulgence is available to those who incompletely fulfill the conditions. Not everyone will be able to take part in the Divine Mercy devotions being held in our church this Sunday afternoon. A partial indulgence however, is also offered on this date to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation (such as Jesus I trust in You ). This little prayer takes but a second or two to say and can be prayed anywhere. A good rule of thumb is to never allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good. Great mercies can flow from even little prayers, and the gift of mercy made available in a special way this Sunday, is not one to be left unwrapped. Wishing you all the blessings that I can give, Fr. Thomas More Garrett op WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER We are called to be a resurrection people and reflect God s love and mercy in our own lives and relationships with others.
