Locust Grove Archives Finding Aid Series J: Subseries: Young Family Collection William H. Young Finding Aid Completed by Jennifer Plick 2/23/99 Updated by Angela Stultz 7/8/2010 Volume: Acquisition: Access: Copyright: 22 cubic feet in 44 boxes Bequest of Annette Innis Young. Monday through Friday, by appointment with the Curator. See Curator for details. 1

Biographical Sketch William Hopkins Young (1855-1909) was born in Poughkeepsie, New York to Henry Lathrop Young and Mary Eliot Dwight. His early education took place at the Riverview Military Academy in Poughkeepsie and the Holbrook Military School in Sing Sing, (Ossining) New York. In 1881, William Hopkins Young graduated from Columbia College Law School. After marrying Martha Innis in 1883, William H. Young established the law firm of Young & Phinney (later to become Young, VerPlanck & Prince). He was an active participant in both New York City and Poughkeepsie society. In 1895, William H. Young, his wife, and two children moved to Locust Grove which was purchased in 1901. William Hopkins Young died in 1909. Scope and Content Note The papers of William Hopkins Young are section of the larger Young Family Archives, which are in turn a component of the primary museum collection at Locust Grove. They were donated to Locust Grove with the Young Family Archives, part of the founding bequest of Mr. Young s daughter, Annette Innis Young. Miss Young grew up at the Locust Grove estate, and, upon her death in 1975 transferred all her personal property to found the museum. Her family papers were scattered throughout the mansion and outbuildings, and in the late 1970 s an attempt was made by staff and volunteers to organize part of the Young Collection. This attempt was not systematic and, in fact, overlooked several hundred boxes of archival material which remained inaccessible until the late 1990 s. Between 1998 and 2010, with partial funding from the New York State Archives through the Documentary Heritage Program, the Young Family Archives were removed from boxes, drawers and closets throughout the historic mansion and organized in a new storage facility in the Visitor Center to ensure their preservation and promote increased public access. The papers belonging to William Hopkins Young (1855-1909) deal primarily with his business interests and financial holdings. Legal papers proposing the creation of the Poughkeepsie Light, Heat and Power Company as well as statements from the Poughkeepsie Gas Light Company are included. Also quite interesting are papers documenting William Young's interests in several mining companies in the west. The collection also contains documents pertaining to the acquisition of Locust Grove as well as repairs and/or improvements made to the house and estate. The papers are organized into two series: 1.) Correspondence 1869-1909; 2.) Personal Papers. The papers are arranged in chronological order when possible. The series descriptions will provide more detailed information. The general condition of this collection is good. The larger documents such as deeds and investment papers, contain numerous pages that have been folded and may be fragile as a 2

result. Bound items such as account books or school notebooks appear to be in relatively good condition. Letters and other handwritten documents are for the most part quite clear and easy to read. In general, artificial series and arrangement groupings have been created, since no discernable order from the creator was evident. See the arrangement note for more information about arrangement by series. Series Descriptions Series 1: Correspondence (1869-1909) This series is divided into three categories: 1.) Correspondence-Dated, 2.) Correspondence-Undated, 3.) Empty Envelopes. The correspondence in this series includes letters both to and from William H. Young. All dated letters are filed chronologically, undated correspondence and empty envelopes follow. Series 2: Personal Papers William Hopkins Young s personal papers, like his correspondence, were part of Annette Innis Young's 1975 bequest to found the museum at Locust Grove. They consist of a wide variety of materials arranged alphabetically by subject. In general, because these papers were dispersed throughout the Locust Grove mansion and were not arranged by their creator, unless otherwise noted subject categories have been artificially created to improve access. This series is divided into several categories including information on the maintenance of Locust Grove, deeds, as well as the dispersal of William H. Young s estate. Financial matters include bills, cancelled checks, check registers and ledgers. Due to the original organization, many bills for Martha Innis Young are among those for William H. Young. Bills which are filed chronologically and then alphabetically (1899-1900, 1903-1904, 1905-1907, 1908-1909) were removed from the damaged expanding files where they were originally filed by the Young family and placed, in the same order, in these folders. Mr. Young was very active in various clubs and the Club Membership box reflects his memberships. Others categories include Mr. Young s schooling which consists of all items pertaining to the Riverview and Holbrook Academy, as well as Columbia College Law School. Travel contains invoices, brochures and travel schedules. 3

Arrangement Note In general, artificial categories have been created for the Young Family Archives in general and the William Hopkins Young Papers in particular. However, some overall trends present in the Young Archives were used as the basis for these categories. Correspondence Letters in the Young Family Archives were often grouped chronologically and so this arrangement protocol has been applied to the entire collection. Ribbons tying bundles of letters have been retained in the collection, though the original bundles have been dismantled to facilitate access and preservation. In several instances, greeting cards were separated from general correspondence and continue to be housed in separate folders. Correspondence is not divided other than by year, and letters continue to be housed in their original envelopes (if they survive). Personal Papers In general, all categories in the Personal Papers sub-category have been artificially created. However, as with Correspondence, when a pattern of arrangement dating to the Young Family could be discerned it has been retained. Many Bills were organized chronologically and then alphabetically, often over a period of several years. All Bill folders arranged chronologically and alphabetically are original to the Young period. All bills arranged chronologically but not alphabetically have been sorted by the museum. Cancelled Checks have also been organized chronologically, as they were organized by the Young family. All other subject categories in Personal Papers have been artificially created by staff. 4
