Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my in those days. Acts 2:18
Reading Overview Today we celebrate the Festival of Pentecost, one of the three major festivals of the Church Year along with Christmas and Easter. In today s Old Testament lesson, God places his Spirit on the elders of Israel and empowers them to prophesy. Today s New Testament lesson tells the story of the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Jesus disciples on the first Christian Pentecost. Jesus death and resurrection are proclaimed in multiple languages to thousands of people in Jerusalem. Today s Gospel lesson includes a quote from Jesus, who describes the work of the Holy Spirit as flowing rivers of living water emanating from the hearts of those who believe in Jesus (John 7:38). Come, Holy Spirit, touch my heart with the fire of your love. Additional Readings Ezekiel 37:1-14 Joel 2:18-32 Acts 4:1-31 To Our Guests: Nursery Available

Call to Worship and Invocation L O God, on this day you sent your Holy Spirit to kindle faith and ignite the continuing proclamation of the Gospel. C Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me. L Shape the Church s speech and song that we may bear witness to you. C Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me. L By the power of our Baptism, help us to live by the Spirit. C Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me. L In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Confession and Absolution L Heavenly Father, we confess that we have often been timid instead of bold in sharing your Word. C We have shrunk back instead of proclaiming joyfully the Good News of Jesus. L Let us confess our sins before God. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. L The Spirit of the living God poured out upon Jesus first disciples is the same Spirit that is given to us today. Through the work of the Spirit we rejoice to know that our sins are forgiven for Jesus sake. C Thanks be to God! Amen.
Hymn of Praise Come Down, O Love Divine DOWN AMPNEY LSB 501: 1,2,4
Prayer of the Day L The Lord be with you. C And also with you. L Let us pray. Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of life, breathe new life into our parched spirits. Quench our spiritual thirst with the living water that flows from our Lord Jesus Christ. We pray this in Jesus name. C Amen. First Lesson Numbers 11:24 30 (ESV) So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it. Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, My lord Moses, stop them. But Moses said to him, Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them! And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Second Lesson Acts 2:1-21 (ESV) When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Children s Message
Gospel Processional Hail Thee, Festival Day SALVE FESTA DIES LSB 489 Holy Gospel John 7:37 39 (ESV) On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. L This is the Gospel of the Lord. The Creed: Third Article with Explanation L For the creed this morning, we read together the words of the third article of the Apostles Creed with Luther s explanation. C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. L What does this mean? C I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.
