BY FAITH ABRAHAM OBEYED HEBREWS 11:8-19 Text: Hebrews 11:8 Hebrews 11:8 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. Introduction: The Lord leads us after the flood to this Bible character whose name is Abraham. Abraham had great faith, fervent faith. (Read Text) Verse 8 says, By faith Abraham In verse 9 the Bible says, By faith Abraham sojourned In verse 17 we read, By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac. Faith has many children such as rest, peace of mind, and calmness in life. To live by faith is the requirement of the Christian life. No one can come to the Lord except by faith. There is no way to live the Christian life apart from faith. It s impossible to please God without faith. - 1 -

Notice: 1. ABRAHAM S OBEDIENCE Hebrews 11:8 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. A. Involved Separation Genesis 12:1 1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: B. Involved Substance Genesis 12:5 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. C. Involved Surrender Genesis 12:4 4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. - 2 -

2. ABRAHAM S OUTLOOK Hebrews 11:9-10 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. A. Perception We must be in a position to hear God. 1. This demands a relationship 2. This demands a readiness 3. ABRAHAM S OFFERING Hebrews 11:16-18 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Genesis 22:3-5 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; - 3 -

and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. A. Preparation 1. Hands were prepared (v. 3) Abraham wasted no time. 2. Head was prepared (v. 4-5) Abraham had three days to think about what was about to happen. 3. Heart was prepared (v. 5b) He was going to worship God. He was willing to give everything that was present that day and all that was promised in the future. B. Participation Genesis 22:6-14 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar - 4 -

upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. 1. Personal (v. 6) Abraham personally placed the wood on Isaac. He personally took the fire and the knife and led the way. 2. Profound (v. 7-10) Abraham held nothing back. He was willing to give up everything he had longed for, lived for, and loved at the simple command of God. He received God s provision (v. 11-14) He received God s praise (v. 12) He received God s promise (v. 15-19) - 5 -
